Not that good

So I read some recommendations here and at, went out to the bookstore and bought the first volume in Japanese, read it, and... It's not that good.

This story on the surface appears to be quite deep. After a full read-through it, in fact, BRIMS with cliches. Seriously this is nothing I haven't seen before in other Manga. The protagonist midway moves to I-must-protect-my-woman mode, in Very clear shounen-style (I thought I could have gotten something more original). The woman again, appears deep. But after some careful study, I feel like she has very little character. There are hints of her issues here and there, the manga describes as 'high school issues' but they never mention anything and definitely don't explore the topic. At All! (again very disappointing). Only the friend of the protagonist, the glasses guy gets a fairly in-depth look but he gets thrown to the wayside as the story progresses and is basically unimportant to the point of the story later on. I admit the presentation and artstyle is excellent. The spaces are interesting, the facial expressions give the characters soul. I definitely take a liking to the artstyle. If you in your late teens, go read it. You will enjoy it tremendously. But some of us who have been reading manga for a while now, volume 1 is nothing special.

The story is well set out with good pacing. At the end of every chapter you just want to know what happens next, defininately is on my 'keep an eye out for updates' manga list.

I'm a bit biased...

There's no denying it (I'll admit it up front). I'm also an active and passionate fan of Ikuemi Ryo's works since the early '90s, which may or may not contribute to the rating.

Chapter One was a bit abrupt (it's a web comic, after all) but immediately sets the right pacing for what's next to come. Ikuemi Ryo makes good use of facial expressions (and not only for comical effects), and the humor is just spot on. Definitely worth a stab at, if only for curiosity's sake.
