Ogeretsu Tanaka and Rape/Victim Blaming

Tanaka's works are full of rape and victim blaming. That would be fine, if it would get addressed as such, you can tell a ton of horror, thriller or psychological drama with these themes and tropes.
However, Tanaka cannot address her own themes she brings up, and will straight up glance over them. In one chapter, someone will get graphically raped and victim blamed, and in the next chapter, they all sit merrily over lunch together as if nothing happened.
This wouldn't fly in any other genre, and yet somehow it doesn't seem to bother the author, nor the majority of readers. If you, as a creator, decide to bring the heavy themes to the table, then you have to deal with them.
Imagine this in any other work, like science fiction:
"General, the enemy has killed one of our colonies! Over 3 billion people are dead!"
"My goodness, that is harrowing! That is genocide of the highest calibre!"
"Sir, what should we do?!"
"... Nothing."
"..."
"I shall now get to lunch, time to go home."
Not only does this make the work hollow, but straight up offensive to a point: What is the point of having hard themes, if they make no difference? Why include terrible characters, if the story doesn't care about it?
This is my gripe with many of Tanaka's works, other ones will go straight up into the victim blaming, which is quite frankly disgusting as someone who has dealt with this irl.
Her works will still continue to be exceptionally popular, which I will never understand, but at least you have been warned now, I wish someone had warned me before I picked up this manga in a store, and had to return it after I read volume 1.

In this manga nothing got achieved, felt nothing but frustration, both wasn't compatible, the seme was serious, mature and caring the uke was a kid, airhead and selfish, the "rape" we cant count it that ,cause first they were "supposedly" already in relationship, second it was out of frustration and the feeling of insecure(not knowing what it was all about inside the uke mind), and the blame goes to the uke one sided decision and not being frank
The manga was going around in one circle, and the seme deserve better couple, and there was no strong line or impact when they get out of a critical moments, if we consider it "critical", as most of it one sided decision (by the uke) and lack of understanding each other and no communication, and again cause it started wrong because of the childish uke he didn't gave a dependable vibe and always throw the weight of any problem to the seme.
wished the seme accept the girl confession (she was alot better than the uke)
Good Seme X Bad Uke
And I agree 100% with what "My two cents " said, sum it better than I did

Read this manga only recently and i CANNOT bring myself to believe that people out here think that naoto is to blame for the rape😕 BEING FRIENDLY TO PEOPLE DOESNT MEAN THAT YOU DESERVE TO GET RAPED. And the fact that taichi didnt even apologise properly!?!?? It just went like oh my bad. He freaking said such mean things like you're not at all cute when you're close and pushed naoto. Compeltely outraged. Taichi could've atleast brought the matter up later and full apologise but wth. Nishina is such a nice guy and taichi DOES NOT deserve naoto smh.

I read two volumes of it, it could've been a pretty well written manga, if only it wasn't for that rape scene. I don't usually mind a rape scene in manga, but I do mind when it's completely glossed over the way it is here, even making it seem like Naoto is partly to blame for being raped. When the new love interest shows up in second volume, I'm 100% cheering for Naoto to leave Taichi and end up with him, when I'm pretty sure that's not the way the mangaka wants me to feel. I really liked the way she dealt with similar issues in her other works, so I'm disappointed that she dropped the ball here because I expected better.

couldve been better

This had potential, the downside to this manga is the rape, there is ALOT of non consensual sex in here, the author usually doesnt do anything to solve the problem and kinda skims over it. Nao is a cute charcater and Taichi is probably not that bad but every single godamn time he gets jealous he ends up
>fucking Nao senseless
>rapng him
Its disgusting and horrible, this couldve been easily solved if the author drew a scene where they had a heart to heart convo with Taichi expressing his dislike for Nao's lady killer/flirty attitude towards other girls.
The art is pretty good, and it has some funny moments. Its better than your average yaoi manga but definetly not worthy of a grade higher than 8
(ps,i really really like the girl that confessed to Taichi, shes adoable and very mature)

tanaka-sensei really ramped up the drama in this one up to 11 without making it too melodramatic and like a soap opera. normally i'd be annoyed with this type of thing but it feels believable with the way the characters have been portrayed thus far. naoto is an outgoing extrovert, a flirty cutie who's both one of the guys and one of the girls, so to speak. taichi is the opposite, an introvert who isn't interested in being everyone's friend and rarely musters a smile. they're both immature in that they're horribly stubborn about their convictions and cannot communicate for shit. people can say that naoto shouldn't do this or taichi shouldn't be that all they want but communication is the number one relationship killer. people don't learn. it's almost boring how every problem they have is related to communication but at least tanaka doesn't make it tedious and balances it out with some sweet moments. my number one hope is that this couple learns to communicate effectively so that i'm not left wondering when the next misunderstanding will be.
now for the glaring problem that basically everyone has addressed:
i care enough about these blockheads that i'm willing to continue this story, despite the flaws and setbacks. i'm really enjoying the new nishina character that's been introduced (he's adorable)

first of all, there is no excuse for rape. EVER. i don't care if naoto killed taichi's puppy, there is absolutely no reason fathomable that would ever make it even a little ok for taichi to rape naoto. it's blowing my fucking mind how people might think that it's even a little warranted because that mentality is so awful. NO.
second of all, this loops back to the communication issue. would it fucking kill taichi to admit that he's jealous? all the jealousy and desire to control naoto only speaks to taichi's immaturity and i'm glad he still thinks about it. im disappointed that naoto seemed to brush it off, but it does seem like this issue will come up again and be addressed (hopefully) so i'll be waiting for that.

I have to speak, because there were people here who thinks that Naoto is partly blamed for Taichi raped him. I have to say that is ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE! I don't say that Naoto's behaviour like he is too flirty is not wrong. I agree with that when you are in a relationship you have to set the boundaries. But please! Never even try to find an excuse for abusive behaviour! That is wrong in every circumstances. There is always other solutions where you don't have to use violence. You can speak with each other what you don't like and if he/she can not change at that, then you have to say goodbye, because it won't work that the one is always hitting or raping the other one, if that one does something wrong. I don't know how much he would be sorry if one time he will be so angry that maybe he even kill the other one. Then he can be verry sorry. But can't do anything anymore. So abusivness can not be rightful ever!

Idk but

This manga kind of had an impact to me, just like Sensei's other works. Could've gave this a higher rate, but the rape is kind of idk. Tho, the rape was almost forgivable (just almost). What I wanted now is to bring back the topic of when Taichi raped Naoto. Kind of similar to Hidoku Shinaide. Honestly, I reallyyyy hated it at first. And even when Maya became the ideal seme (mature and considerate for Nemu) as time passed, I still couldn't get over the past and kind of hated him UNTIL the topic about what happened in the past was brought up. Maya apologized sincerely to Nemu and well, I kind of slowly see him into a new light.
Bottomline is, maybe I'll like this manga better if Taichi would be considerate to Naoto's feelings and be expressive to him.

I've read the comments here, felt like commenting on it. This might get a little ling though.
I feel like people have a very huge gap trying to understand the complexity of these characters and the situations they get themselves in. So I'll give it a go.
I feel like the character that people misunderstand the most is Naoto. People always feel bad for Naoto, poor Naoto and blah blah blah. But they don't seem to notice anything that Naoto says or does. Naoto is a flirty guy who is very easy-going, has somewhat of a bad temper and gets angry extremely easily. I have never seen anyone point any of this out ever. People only ever complain about Taichi, to the point of calling him abusive. But do you not see? Or what? I bet most of you think Taichi is overtly jealous right? Seriously? The overtly flirty Naoto, even after he started dating Taichi did not cut back on being his usual flirty ways, and how he gets unusually close to all the girls. Would you like that? If your bf/gf flirts with others infront of you as if it was nothing? Really? Some people are flirty yes, but once in a relationship you should cut down on that. He was always making Taichi feel insecure without even noticing it. And another thing, you see how they get in fights? Naoto gets angry about something stupid in 00.01 seconds and then leaves angry as if he is always right to be angry and blames it all on Taichi. Over and over and over again. He never considers Taichi?s feelings. He only ever cares about how he?s feeling. About the rape scene, I?m not going to say it wasn?t bad because it was. But you guys act like he did it out of nowhere and didn?t feel remorse and didn?t apologize. When he did. Yes it was bad, he knew it and he got away from Naoto knowing he did something bad. And for fucks sake Naoto didn?t blame himself for that. Wtf where the hell did you even get that. He felt bad for ignoring Taichi?s feelings for most of their relationship. This is too much to discuss and I can?t even put all of it here. Feel free to discuss it, if there was a reply button her it would be nice. But yep these are my 10 cents. And I have sooo much more. But it would probably become and essay.

Mostly even not because of rape, wich speaks volumes, cause I can't stand this stuff. But there're this things I hate even more - victim blaming and self-blaming. I used to work with rape victims so I know how destructive these are. To not to try get rid of feelings for rapist and staying friends with them.. well, only in bad yaoi it would end up with happy ending. And the final nail is how Naoto blames himself for not realising Taichi's feelings. That, between Taichi not confessing in a first place, treating him like sex friend, fighting with him all the time, telling him they're not dating but just "sexually gratificating" each other, f*cking him while he is drunk after reunion, and finally raping him. That's the textbook love, why not realise, indeed.
