I don't know about you guys but to me this author's art is really beautiful. Some panels are stunning and I love the way he/she draws the hair. But the story itself is kinda confusing. Not that the plot is confusing (it's a rather common plot instead) but it is the way the artist leads the story. Looks like he/she still haven't much experience so he/she can't totally develop all of the characters. Some panels have too many words and that will make the readers (or at least me) a little tired while reading. I like the main couple's chemistry though, not unique but cute and heart-warming.

Overall, this is not an extremely good manga but I think it still deserves some attention. Hope the author can fix his/her way of expressing the story in later works, it'd be a pity if such beautiful art doesn't have place to grow.

Barairo no Kenkyuu to Hanakurafu Kimi is the prequel, published in 2014- Billy Balibally even mentions it in her bio note for Asa to Micha that it's the sequel to her first work.

to JapanRocks - it's not the first manga of this author, there was at least one "Barairo no Kenkyuu to Hanakarafu Kimi", but I'll get to the point - I just read vol 1.

This yaoi is not that bad. The story itself is interesting but rather simple, it's about hardships of growing up without a loving family, all alone, making mistakes, hurting and being hurt. I don't think it's tryin' to be artsy but indeed it's a bit messy, same goes for the art. The difference between the past and present main characters' life is huge and not very convincing... but we all know very well that the power of love can change everything ;P even turn two delinquents into a cute fluffy lovey-dovey couple. What's wrong with that? Honestly, I don't mind. Characters - main and supporting - all of them are likeable and heart-warming (maybe except 10 years older Mika).

I can't wait for vol 2, but even now I know it won't be exceptionally outstanding manga, it'll be a nice time killer, you won't regret picking up.

Weird Atmosphere
by JapanRocks

This is misleading. The main characters look beat up in the cover picture and the summary is broody. I was not expecting a cute fluffy lovey-dovey couple. Plus I immediately thought that this mangaka was new. It just shows.

The art is pretty in some panels and wonky in others. The eyes could use some work, they go from pretty to derpy very quickly. The story also needs to flow better. One panel is a deep angsty internal dialogue about how disturbed the characters are and how sad they are to be so dependent on their lover. The next is a scene showing them lovingly hand feeding each other or snuggling. There's even chibi faces and hearts floating around. The only dark happenings are in the character's past. It's not bad, it just needs to change atmosphere more subtly.
On the bright side I quite like the character's personalities. I don't mind a love-dovey couple in general. It's just that the combination of a bunch of different factors gives this would-be simple story a weird atmosphere. And I don't think it's intentional. It screams "Baby's first manga" and I'd be surprised if the circumstances are different.

Slow and fragmented angsty highschool BL that tries to be artsy

I was a little excited to read the story after the synopsis (I like BL with an "unhealthy romance" themes), but I found myself utterly bored reading this. I finished the first volume and needless to say, I won't be continuing it. To be fair, I don't know how long this series is intended to be, so things could change later in the story, but this series has lost me as a reader.

The relationship starts with a love at first sight and after that all you see are lovely dovey scenes and sex scenes with characters narrations on nearly every page full of angst. It over-narrates and takes itself too seriously. Too much saying, not enough showing. Then, the involvement of an abusive ex is sooo typical.

Rather than a story, it reads like bits and pieces of someone's emo diary. You may think I'm being overly critical, but the author didn't establish the characters very well. The character motivations are cliched and flimsy.

The uke:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The uke basically "slept around" because his parents died when he was young and he got rejected (romantically) by the caretaker who took him in. Of course, he is the insecure type that has to have an abusive "ex" which causes problems. Ex is in quotes because I don't remember if the story actually clarified their relationship was over before he started going out with the seme.

The seme:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The seme is a misunderstood guy because people judge him by his appearance. He falls in love with the first guy who's somewhat kind to him. Okay, I've read tons of BL with this exact character type, but the problem with this manga is execution. He's so bland.

If you want something that's similar and actually interesting to read, try Itou-san (KURAKA Sui) or something.
