I'm a BIG BIG BIG fan of the book and this manga is great to some point. The story is GREAT it is the only reason I can't give this manga under 8. The art is not good (maybe 3 or 4 characters are well drawn), too much background story I don't care, destroying Mitsuko character (she's my favorite in the book) and changing some characters death (why?)
AND
It is gore HELLO the story is about a bunch of kid forced to kill each other. You should'nt just focus on the killing but the psychological aspect of the human nature. Anyway, my recommendation is to read the book, and for lazy ass who think 600 pages is too long, watch the movie!

This manga is either for you or not for you. It has really good characters but unless you can stand a diminishing character list and very adult themes i'ld say this is definitly not for you
Good . . but come on!

This manga is like heavy metal music. You are either WAY to into violence and messed up crap, or you find the heavy atmosphere entertaining, but can take it with a sense of humor. I say this meaning, this series is gory, sexual, and way over the top.

This manga is full of nudity, violence, blood and pieces of bodies... and sad stories of course. The story is somehow sick and sad. I just couldnt accept that they killed each other to get out of that crazy game when they r friends. Not only so, every students have a very sad and depressing story ( this is definitely the sadest class on earth... )
somewhat disappointed

this disappointed me after all. At very first chapters, the character design "of the old day" made me sick like hell which marked my negative impression on the series. The review had absorbed me, though, not much of truth. It's that the story was absurd as suspected, ends up not moving, impressive and un predictable as expected. Two final survivals dont deserve it, they played not much for their life, just cluttering tears all around. More, characters' early backgounds are also immature, incomplete, false focus, not enough for me to "feel for them"...at least the artwork add up my critique!
btw, I like the review and gotta a comment on it, "you can see no more than the 2 fluids blood and tear", no, it's 3 and scum counts!

Not for the weak-hearted. This series is full of intense action sequences and sex, narrated by its emotionally distraught characters (who could blame them). The art is realistic and bold; never too afraid to be grotesque or gratuitous. Despite manifold attractions, the simple concept of Darwinism in this novel/manga is what really stands out. Through the program and its characters, we experience the fear, betrayal, trust, and will to survive. Some people may not find the characters credible, but I thought they were fulfilling enough to successfully depict the reactions of one driven to the depths of human limits. It's a modern Lord of the Flies and definitely worth the read.

but heck, battle royale really captures the character's emotion, fear, courage, and in the end some face their twisted fate of their moment. If you like thrilling manga, then i suggest Battle Royale.
It isnt that good.

Hmm yeah it has gore and blood, but its so-so. Crappy story, basicly its about people's pasts, but still couldnt really feel with the characters. So I didnt really care about them. Its just gore and blood nothin more.
very enjoyable

i love the expressive art where every pore and every bead of spit are beautifully and grotesquely rendered. the characters are delightful variable mix of shit ass crazy and just barely sane. their actions and their thinking lies between condamnable and commendable, but enjoyable all the same. i gleefully wait for the next axe to drop, for the next bullet to be shot - and feel sad and teary all the same when a good character dies.
the only irksome thing is the whiny, teary, weak main male character, who dont do anything - and somehow made it alive. but oh well.

Sex, Violence, and Mayhem. My kind of book to sit down and read. Art is beautiful and grotesque at the same time. Plots have some cool twists. If you've seen the movies, you'll get more of the same except with more blood and more sex.
