The story is set in a world where supernatural powers exist through science, and magic exists through religion.

In the story, Touma Kamijou is an ordinary high school boy with terrible academic scores and a power called Imagine Breaker. Imagine Breaker can defeat any other power, but it also undermines Kamijou's own good luck. His Imagine Breaker's immense strength is literally immeasurable, so hapless Kamijou is listed at the supernatural level of 0. He happens to meet a girl in white hanging off his window balcony. The girl says she is being chased by sorcerers, and Kamijou learns that the girl is a Church of England nun whose memories have been forcibly replaced by Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum — the 103,000 forbidden texts of the Church.

A little above average art with more background drawings than the average Shounen make not up for the missing story in this manga.
This manga is a monster-of-the-week mishmash in a made up setting. The best part is the main character isn't a wuss. He is very likeable character. But most of the action is illogical and right out stupid. Yes it is a Shounen. But it sometimes so stupid that it gets boring. And i don't mean the fact that the main character is always the only one to solve a difficult situation, it's Shounen so this is "normal". What i mean it's more like: There are almost no consequences of incidents in the foregone chapter in the next chapter. Apartment destroyed in one chapter, in the next chapter (even few hours later, in-story time) everything is OK. Hospitalized in one chapter, next chapter he is completely healed. And so on.
One exception are new side characters, once introduced they stay somehow (to be used with the next monster-of-the-week antagonist in some chapters later).

Conclusion: A lot of action against all odds, without any sense, with a very likeable boy and a quirky sidekick girl. If you like stories made by 6-years-old plus a little hint of a romance this a manga for you. Ah, there is also a little bit of fan-service in this manga.

I read of manga that has a female freeloader in it, could we add that to the category list, since it sounds interesting. Notable examples, A certain magical index, binbougami ga, and hinamatsuri.

Strange but good

Well it is infact a good read but it's also strange sometimes. I can't say I wasn't expecting this kind of thing since it's a series about magic (religion) and super powers (science) but up until now there was not a single "true evil" villain I mean everytime someone looks evil it turns out they aren't really evil at least in the manga it's like that.First came people fighting for a friend who has no idea who they are then a 10k victims serial-killer turned out to be a child guardian then a terrorist wanting to start a war turned out to be someone grieving over a lost friend, I'm not saying this is bad but I have to say it's incredibly strange xD

I've just seen the anime and manga. Well the manga skips very good parts (entire archs) from the anime so I think for this one I'd recomend seeing the anime for a more complete enjoyment. Just to note, by the moment only chapters 25 and 26 have new story.
Apart, the manga is well done although Touma has a kind of different feeling with this drawing style. The mix of modern science, psychics and magic is really the best of the show.

Good and Bad

I haven't read the novels or seen the anime, so my opinions are strictly based upon the story as a manga series

At the beginning of the series it was really good. Lots of good action, and the basis of their world was really interesting (with magic, psychics, and the reasons explaining them) If i were to rate it just based on the action and fantasy portion of it, i would rate it 10/10
But I found the arcs were small and the was a lack of an underlying plot/story. I mean, it seemed almost too broken up in between the two arcs because of how the first arc ended. Also because of the end of the first arc, instead of seeing character development for the main character, it seemed like more of a setback =/
As far as rating goes, for me there were too many factors that varied in rating so im gonna leave this as unrated

The anime follow the novels not the manga, so probably is better. For now i saw that the manga add and skip things, here they made Touma more "cool" and they skip totally the second novel.
Usually i saw people that prefer novels as Shana or Zero but for me To Aru is better, as for Mushiuta and Baccano novels.
I don't like the character "Index" because is the usually loli main chara clichè, but Mikoto is awesome for this i prefer the side story "To Aru Kagaku no Choudenjibou", where Mikoto is the main chara. Mikoto>Index
The story is very good and the magic<->science adaption is pretty cool, i like all character, except index, and the action part is awesome.

From the first 2 volumes, there are some potential here. And the anime is coming out, though they might alter the story (or make a 2nd season, if they wait for the manga).

The action is nice, and I'd like to see the hero develop from here. since he only have his right arm as a weapon (or shield), it'll be interesting to see how he uses it in more complicated battles.
