Dumpster fire or Missed Opportunities

This manga gets a lot of attention like a dumpster fire because the mangaka is a jobber. Reiji is in it for the money. He prolongs the same cliche of loser wants unattainable girl. Every episode, you hear what is a loser like him doing with a gorgeous girl like her.

The reason we keep reading is like watching soccer where there is only a single referree who cannot be everywhere and no video replay. Yes, we talk about all the missed calls and how it would have changed the game. It sells the sport and the same goes for this manga. You read it and catch all the missed opportunities and write comments about the frustration that after 150+ episode the MC and FMC relationship is still at a standstill. He still squanders his money in renting her. At this point, I just want it to be over and I do not care if they get together.

I actually think that he should man up and gracefully move on and she should get a boyfriend with the same affinities as her. They are not compatible. Also, isn't it strange how she has no close friends at all and no current boyfriend, someone so charming and good looking?!?

Relationships Must have been easy for people poorly rating :)

Sorry, the MC is pretty relatable to a ton of guys. Coming from a guy who literally broke my back to do anything I could for a girl I liked, and then locked up in a friend zone, this was a blast of nostalgia and hilarity for me. That may or may not be what the writer was aiming at, but there are tons of people who can take something away from this story.

Some of it can be a little cringey sure. Ruka's definitely not my favorite character but she has a purpose in order for entertainment value.

Without spoilers, I can honestly say though. If you are a guy (yeah guys can definitely enjoy this stuff, I sure did!), who has been caught in those crazy moments where everything just seems to go wrong every time you were there for a girl when she cried, or walked her home, or carried her groceries, or stayed with them because they didn't have anyone else at the time, then this is a great story to follow. I'm at the end at 155 right now, and personally can't wait to see where things go!

I should start off by saying that this thing is a shonen. If you're too in-depth with regards to minor details and other similar thingamabobs, I'm not so sure you're going to like it. However, if you're similar to the MC's situation, you can also feel dread the further you read into it.

Characters are given some spotlight here and there, but it's mainly just Chizuru and Kazuya. Everyone saying that Kazuya's actions aren't justified and insisting on why she's still dating Chizuru even after he got in a relationship with Ruka probably doesn't understand the situation. I've read up to the furthest chapter released in this time(September 8), and I can absolutely understand what everyone is saying about the series. Sure, it has some flaws here and there, but I can't deny that I really got hooked in the story.

I can't come to like the male and female lead.

To be honest, I don't really like it at the beginning. Even now, I still don't really like this manga. I mean, I even skipped so many chapters here and began reading again at the time when Kazuya was preparing the script and funding for the movie. 😅 I read this for the sake of finishing this manga since I have started it.

I appreciate Kazuya for his honesty, compassion, and sincere feeling to help Chizuru. He worked really hard for that film even though he didn't know anything about film production previously. I respect him for this. But I don't like him since he feels like the type of guy who can't make clear decision to reject a girl he's actually not interested to. Or did he unconciously just enjoy being around women? Anyway, in my mothertounge, I call Kazuya as a "plin plan" guy because of this.

And I don't like Chizuru. I have found some hard-hearted women as the female lead in other manga, but Chizuru is really exceptional. Even after 100+ chapters including the recent ones, she still closed her heart and being stubborn. She was obviously sad, need support and/or help, but she always put the strong woman cover. Gee.

And even after all what Kazuya did for her, even if deep down she felt thankful and happy for it, she always act as stubborn as ever. What did she think Kazuya is? 😅

I often get impatient observing this couple. Honestly, I can't sympathize with the male and female lead. At all.

However, to be a bit fair for this manga, I actually liked the concept a little bit. I often hear about the rental girlfriend profession in videos about Japan I watched, but to make this into a focus in a manga was interesting.

I'll give it 7, I think.

A few spoilers so read at your own risk: BORING READ
by LUEser

I thought the idea of a "rental girlfriend" seemed quirky and interesting, and if the story progresses right, this would have been a very fun read...and it was...

The artwork is definitely very fun and creative. The mangaka has definitely done his research in fashion and modern career trends (, Day in the Life of a Mangaka by Paolo of Reiji Miyajima, the mangaka of this manga), which is something I truly appreciate. However, the characters are not memorable (besides Kazuya's friend Kibe and Umi), quite childish, and can make reading the manga painfully boring.

The problem with this manga (and other romance/drama manga) is that the mangaka ran out of new and creative "drama" to stir the pot and ends up recycling previous plots. So this manga ends up going around in circles multiple times with a new character or updated script but the drama is still generally the same idea. No drama is ever so great that it is hindering yet builds character. Instead, the mangaka creates a lot of little drama that's just more of an annoyance that serves no actual purpose. Eventually, the plot strays and it focuses on Chizuru's dreams of acting but by the time I reached that point, the manga is already so boring that I've stopped investing good time in reading it.

Example dramas that should have been emphasized for more drama:
1. Nanami and her vow to break Kazuya and Chizuru apart. Wouldn't it have been very interesting that the ex-girlfriend who dumped Kazuya is trying to break them apart out of jealousy constantly? I thought this "revenge" was definitely downplayed, and it would've had a more dramatic effect, even if it was out of pettiness. Instead, you only see it here and there, never anything great, but always just generally there.
2. Kazuya's family business. We don't hear about it until in the middle of the story thus far, BUT it was only mentioned briefly a few times. We barely know what it is and why Kazuya rarely talks about it (except that he will probably take over it). We don't know how he or his family feels about it.
3. Both of Kazuya's and Chizuru's social life outside of what we've been reading so far. Kazuya's friends Kibe and Kuri make their own tiny arcs in the manga but right after their role is done, you don't hear from them again. I'm disappointed that I am now reading more about his cosplay neighbor more than about Kazuya's childhood friend Kibe, who I thought was the most real guy I actually liked. Then there's Chizuru who doesn't have much a social life; we know she has friends but she's not close with them. Even one of her customers creating drama would have been a good drama idea.

Example dramas that has been emphasized but shouldn't have been:
1. Ruka's patience for her boyfriend who continues to rent a girlfriend. What idiot allows their boyfriend to continue to rent a girlfriend? And what idiot would make a plot this way😕
2. The grandmothers' constant health scares. And then you learn that it was over something small, which is just a way to change the subject or quickly deter the plot from moving in a specific direction. This has been used multiple times and is honestly getting really old. Pun intended.
3. The grandmothers' expectations of Kazuya and Chizuru's "marriage". I mean seriously, we barely even know WHAT the Kinoshita family business is, let alone the constant talk of him taking over it, and with Chizuru's dreams so big, they really can't expect her to settle.

Hard to empathize

The premise was interesting, and had a lot of potential. Art is decent, and Chizuru is cool.

However, the MC has the worst personality and its hard to empathize with him. He is narcissistic and selfish, but everything is accepted as if he is justified. It's delusional.

If you read, it requires suspension of belief. I felt my time was wasted. I really wish it could have turned out better.

It should be way more promising

I decided to binge this manga after watching a YouTube video on the artist's life. I thought it was interesting so decided to take a look.

Boy I really felt like I have wasted an entire day. Could've done other stuff, so I had to create an account just for this.

The MC, like others have said, is terribly boring and a huge coward, even by average MC standards. He constantly chickens out and lies and tries to redeem himself through "heart".

The girls, let's briefly discuss them. You've got

Ex girlfriend: Manipulative beeotch who will stop at nothing to break up couples. She actually makes this story more spicy funny enough.

Main girl, the fake girlfriend: She's cool and has an interesting backstory.

Side chick high school girl who has huge crush on MC: she starts off great, the tell em aggressive girl, but lately she's been getting a little annoyingly clingy. Maybe has to due with her young age though.

Shy girl: Wholesome and one of the few people that is good in this show.

Generation Z girl who speaks like an Internet dictionary: not interesting at all.

The series starts off slow but picks up quickly, with character development building including tragic backstories, decent arcs, and drama! But then this recipe appears to repeat over and over again, till it's like beating a dead horse some more. I think I speak for.many people it was exhausting to watch MC f up once again through his cowardliness and the girls to try to cover his butt. By chapter 70 something I was getting fatigued and ended up skimming the rest of the manga in under an hour.

If you like manga which doesn't make too much sense logic wise and has fanservice, this is fine. But plot wise, it's okay at best, and can get repetitive fast.

My recommendation: Skip!

As a lot of people have said, the MC tends to be way too dense in the beginning, and he stays pretty dense throughout. But something I can say is that he's sincere, especially when it comes to the girls he likes. That being said, the relationship between the MC and his rental gf grows very organically and I'm excited to see what this story had in store for the future.

Wishful Fulfillment with a different spin

In most romcom harem series like this the MC is your blank page or at least someone the average guy can relate to. This series takes a different approach by making the MC more of a cowardly and weak willed person without hiding it but even with all these traits the MC is still able to attract the attention of not just girls but fairly pretty ones. You can't have me believe these young pretty women are dying for the attention of an average looking guy with these traits.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ignoring the fact that the guy had a GF before the series who was pretty but also a psycho lol
The manga screams wishful fulfillment yet some will try to disguise it as some coming of age tale of a young man building himself up through trials and tribulations. Add to that there is not a single prominent male character around makes it even more obvious. (Can't have prominent male characters outside of the MC in harem series as it shines the spotlight on how average or lacking the MC is) The author may have had a good idea going and it could have gone the much deeper route but the fact that it is a harem series destroys any possibility of that.

From the writing my guess is the author didn't have the know it all to write a deeper series. Most of the story is just misunderstandings caused by lack of communication so your typical romcom shtick. I'll give the author mad props for his art which is the saving grace of the manga. Writing wise the only way this series can be more than it is(at least imo)is if the ending of the series ends with a bit of youthful disappointment for the MC. Not that he should die or face irreparable harm but if its just him getting the girl in the end then I rest my case.

Sadly for me I couldn't get into the series past ch30. I didnt feel the story was going anywhere and if it was I guess I just didn't like where it was going. People have said that they like how "realistic" the story is especially the MC. All I have is one word "Harem". The single fact that a low self confidence dude like MC has a harem of girls interested takes any credibility of "realistic" away. How easy would life be for every guy(maybe even girls?) out there with low self-esteem had a harem who they could count on for comfort(emotional or physical). If you enjoy wishful fulfillment tales that fine I do too, but no reason to dress up a pig like a princess.
