while the angst in MODS was heartfelt, it still felt artificial that Shiro decided to pour his heart out to Tora, a happenstance stranger. it was a little too convenient to the plot for my liking, even though I bought the whole tragic story of Shigure, hook line and sinker.
Now that we're focused on Haru, the REAL tragic figure in the story, the feelings and tragedy feel much more real. I was gutted by the first few pages of Haru continuing to dream of Shigure. It is a little convenient that suddenly Shigure's little brother comes along, but Yukitaka has a compelling story and connection to Shigure of his own. Yukitaka and Haru's chemistry was so great, on par with Haru's chemistry with Shigure, while still being his own character. The romantic tension is felt in every chapter, each character mourning the loss of Shigure in their own way and drawing closer and closer to one another.
I couldn't help it, I took a look at the raws, and even though I couldn't understand much, I felt it in the pages. These characters are bound by a deep love and pain, and the way grief brings them together, along with the significance of their names, makes it all the more beautiful.
I need this to be finished soon so I can cry the tears I know I will cry lol.
edit: FINISHED. I DIED. I really appreciate how the author was able to make two works and make the dead character seem so alive and present. Shigure is the pivot by which almost all the other characters spin, and he's written so well. His presence is felt so strongly everytime he's on the page that his absence makes it all the more poignant in the development of those he's left behind. I loved that we got a bit of his backstory in this manga as well, even though it was a bit hard to understand. He has his own darkness and demons that he had to deal with, he only wanted the best for the three characters he loved: Shiro, Haru and Yukitaka. His influence is clear on each of those characters, especially Haru. Haru was even willing to never see Shigure again and give him up to Shiro if only for Shigure's happiness. That's real love. It's still heartbreaking to think about.
My only complaint is that we didn't get to see a bit more of the yakuza politics once Yukitaka got involved with them. I wonder what his future plans are with them, now that he got Yagami to the top spot. I'd die for a sequel. I'm also super interested in the Aki character. He has a cool design. What's his story?
FINAL SEX SCENE IS SUPER HOT AND HEARTFELT. HOLY SHIT. I saw it in the raws before this and was like DAMN. But seeing it again with the translation was even better. It's so passionate and desperate. Yukitaka wants so desperately to be seen; he's still insecure about Haru's feelings because he knows he looks like Shigure and he knows Haru's history. Haru's been wanting to feel connected to Yukitaka for awhile and reassure him of his feelings. It was honestly the best conclusion. I still want that sequel. Damn.
