Not a masterpiece, but fantastic relative to other manhwa series

The young, malnourished Leslie was born to be a human sacrifice for her older sister in order to fully awaken the sister's black magic. Thus, despite being of noble blood, she was a living secret treated worse than a wild animal by her biological family. Supposedly Leslie must be burned in a black fire after she turns ten years old for the transfer of power to successfully go to her older sister. But instead of dying like her predecessors, Leslie triggered her own magical awakening in the fire. Desperate to survive, she runs off to the Monstress Duchess, head of the most powerful household in the empire. She offers her powers in exchange for their protection and eventual revenge; thus begins a journey of self-healing and growth under the tutelage of the duchess.

Although the magical setting for the story is intriguing, the plot really just boils down to observing the life of a formerly-abused child adopted by powerful-cool-feminist-icon. The villains of this story are very predictably her family and groups that oppose the monstress duchess, and they are portrayed with zero redeeming qualities. Nonetheless, it's quite amusing to see how shameless the villainy gets.

The main protagonists and colorful art style are this manhwa's strengths. I adore the entire duchess' family including their servants. Unfortunately, the writing does fall short of amazing, and the story tends to skip over certain plot elements to speed up pacing. We don't get a lot of detail on Leslie's powers. They keep getting alluded to, but it seems they are not the story's focus.

Up until chapter 60, this is mostly a feel-good story portraying a pitiful child finally receiving stability and love. The story gets really interesting after that as the plot dives more into the lore surrounding the empire. This story seems very focused on the emotional aspects but drops the ball when it comes to world-building. But perhaps that will change with time! I have hope. I'm excited to see where this goes from here.

Great Character Poor Plot

The story does very well at exploring the life of a girl abused by her family and the world immediately close to her.

However after the girl leaves the family, the story starts to deteriorate at a disappointing rate.

The villains (father, mother, sister, high priest) in the story are given plot armor to the extent it just makes no sense, meaning you have glaring plot holes immediately after a brilliant start.

Some really obvious plotholes:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
  • Why do other noble families/royal ask why they are trying to kill her?
  • Why are they trying to kill her with fire? Why not just have her killed in the mansion?
  • Why are the villains the only people allowed to use underhanded methods?
  • Why is the high priest which has shown contempt of court not investigated?
  • If as the plot says, God exists and gave power to the priests, why would God allow the priest to go unpunished? Clearly God loves the people by giving people power to cleanse a disease ravaging the world.
  • The argument that a nobility (father) cannot be executed is nonsense when they are demoted to a commoner. Yet no one questions that. It's also questionable that no misfortune happens to said commoner after the trial before transit.
  • The elder daughter manages to cheat the exam? Really? What kind of institution does not retain the original or copy of the exam script? Also who would trust the temple after one of their high priest has shown contempt of court? There should likely have been an independent party adjudicating the exam - maybe from the duchess or emperor himself. I wouldn't even be surprised if the emperor would be interested in personally watching her.
  • Big Question - An assassination attempt was made in the middle of the city - why does not one ask "Why is the fire black?"

There's a lot of potential for this series (just finished c. 59). I love the dynamic between her adoptive family and Leslie. Leslie is so precious and i look forward to seeing her experience happier times.

Good, still, could be much more

Interesting but the lack of skill of the writer makes this hard to read at times. The treatment of the second child is exaggerated, after denigrating, insulting, injuring and trying to kill the child they think she's gone mad because of her resentment and that it's unjustified. Also, the author can't seam to decide whether the whole household bullies her of if only the relatives are privy to this. At some point in the beginning, the MC's father is researching something, re-reading books and magically a book that appears to contradict all the knowledge that has been passed down his family just happens to fall in his hands open at the exact page where crucial information is and it just happens to reveal all that he's looking for. And so on... things happen for necessity of the author, not logic, storytelling or flow.
The idea is good, the story is good and the characters (save the antagonists) are good but the tools and plots the author uses to move the story are really lacking.
Fortunately this gets better after 30ch or so which makes it more enjoyable (for me at least), unfortunately along it the pace got slower and there is little happening. Still, there are several threads of the story that are coming together slowly so I think it's going in a good direction and am enjoying it well enough.

Leslie, a child raised in abuse and neglect, learns just how much value she holds in her family, which is nothing at all. Deciding to change her fate, she searches out the infamous Monster Duchess, and proposes a contract-relationship. She asks to be adopted, and expects to be used in exchange for the power of the Duchess' family. What she doesn't expect is to finally learn the meaning of love and family.

I don't see a direction in this story yet.. (no worthy antagonists, etc) but the female lead is so adorable it kind of kills me.
