From Tokyopop:
Young Mikan runs away to Tokyo to follow her best friend, Hotaru, who has been enrolled in an exclusive, secretive private school for geniuses. But it turns out that Alice Academy is a lot more than meets the eye. If Mikan wants to stay by Hotaru's side, she has to both pass the strange "entrance exam" and face the even greater challenge of befriending her very odd new classmates. Whether it's Hotaru's gift for inventing gadgets, the cranky Natsume's fire-casting ability, or Professor Narumi's control of human pheromones, everyone at the school has some sort of special talent. But what ability, if any, does Mikan possess? Mikan is going to have to rely on her courage and spunk if she's going to stay in school, or even stay alive!

The manga gets depressing later

So the manga starts off lighthearted and fun but gets darker and darker. Characters get killed off and bad things just keep happening. The ending feels only half finished, almost like there should be more chapters or a sequel series, but there isn't. I personally don't recommend reading this as it just gets too dark/depressing towards the end and finishes with a lackluster ending.

I feel that the author rushed the ending. The way the plot was put together could have been better but overall it was decent. It was funny but at the same time some of the stories was dragged on to create more chapters.....

To make it short, I totally agree with Childofsecrets, I used to really love this manga but it just didn't feel right for the second and last arc. It's too dark and depressing
I'm not a fan of lovey-doovey innocent or typical cliche shoujo manga. I even am a fan of dark kind of stories. However, this story is just too depressing. The strength of this manga, as can be found in many manga of Tachibana's sensei, is that the plot is fun to read, funny, and the main character's bright and never-give-up personality that can get through any hardship. But at around the last arc, the stories became too dark, so much different from the plot half way before. It contains hardship, troubles, sadness, and many more (too much) dark feeling. So the manga lost its original charm. This doesn't even count the fact that all characters are just elementary school kids! ( I mean, come on, even in realistic, kids don't have so many dark n depressing things in their life)

Regardless of all said, I still recommend new readers to give this manga a try
It's character, plot, and setting overall is still good to read. It just is not my top fav manga like it used to be at the beginning as when I read

I have been addicted to this series for so many years and there were times I wondered if the end would live up to my expectations. I'm hoping for an extra chapter but after the many tears in the last few volumes it was satisfying to read such a story and love its characters.

love this one have been waiting to read it after it was finished scanlating since already seen the anime, BUT i noticed that the last volume was almost finished... guess what too bad the group working on this is taking way longer then i thought in releasing the chapters now just finished the latest chapter even though 2nd to the last chapter was out like in June 2013 but still no where to be seen very cruel

i finished reading but got 2 more chapters who knows when they will be out... i expecting the last arc to have things changed like the enemy i thought would turn out to be....

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Mikan's dad who everyone thought was dead but the ESP brainwashed him since he was weak after getting attacked and made him his puppet, but no he really was dead (the reason this thought came to mind was cuz when everyone was trying to protect Yuu-chan telling him to run and tell Mikan and others they saw someone with the ESP in his room/office) made me excited ... dont know if anyone else would have given that thought.... i was only thinking this cuz Mikan and her mom and many others would have been shocked and happy to see him alive :)

then it got me annoyed that Mikan's mom was killed and almost Narumi-san too (i was so upset cuz after Yuka and Narumi finally would have been a couple she died T_T)

and i felt sorry for Shiki-san too he waited and couldn't win her....

ok i just hate this story where their are 3 guys out of 3 one dies then 2 left and she chose then next and she her self died and left both behind what a heck!! 2 guys loving 1 girl i get it but i hate when more and more people fall for the same girl plus to top it they dont get a partner or dont want to love anyone anymore!

last Natsume dies ... but will Hotoru saves him but now the question what happend to her and her brother?

i've read this story a few years ago, and i think this story is quite interesting to be read. You know, the story line is good,, and the characters are strong, And more importantly i love natsume,, kyaaa >.< But why this story goes to far, are you think the elementary students can be endure those stupid problems and cruel fate just like that? Oh, come on,, that's silly!! at least, please use the range of age for high school student. sad

The age of the main characters and the story on the beginning may lead you to think that this manga is aimed for children and until some point it can really be read by those. But, as the story goes on, many sad events begins to happen that I think it's for a more mature audience.
So, if you don't like sad events that will probably make you cry in mangas stop reading it at the Gakuen Festival. I simply love it.
The development of the characters, all of the events that happens even the sad ones makes Gakuen Alice one of my favorites manga.

Give it a try.

This is the best fairytale love story between 2 people in any manga!
Well Done Tachibana Higuichi!!!

The show is from an adults reality (taking responsibility for yourself)
Because the school/story has forced the kids to act alone then comes Natsume who's always alone but a brave learner. So he doesn't dream; Until Mikan flies in like a fairy.

What's every1 else reading?!
Natsume's dead -_- Bring the story back!!!

note: All good things come to an end sadly.

It was first published in my country.. But the distribution was really slow and in the end i couldn't help myself and went online to read it. I still religiously buy the tankoubon when it came out so no worries. And now I just read it again after a long long time from the first book and I read it until the latest chapter, ch.177. It was an emotional roller-coaster, I couldn't stop crying and even after I finished reading it the tears wouldn't stop and thus this review..

I can't stop myself wondering what would happen to Imai siblings, And will Hotaru be back safe and sound?? I really can't imagine the ending of this manga if they didn't survived. And how much I admire Bear, he's sacrificing his "freedom" inside the academy and be a "regular" bear just to be able to be near Mikan and protect her. I really curious about his life in the outside world, will he walk around when no one is looking?? Will he still be violent?? And last but not least, what will Natsume do when he's finally awake?? Will he be able to go to Mikan or does he have to wait until he graduated??

Yup, the spoiler is pretty much a break down of my concern for the future ending of this manga. Truly one of the BEST manga I've ever read. It sweet, funny, sad, with a lots of angst and fully packed with action, Alices style.

I first found out about Gakuen Alice as the anime almost what, 4-5 years ago? I adored it. More than adored it. Though it was very innocent and childlike it was still whimsical and original enough not to be too mushy and I liked that about it. Basically, it was a pleasure to read. And though I gladly followed it into it's darker transition perhaps it became something so opposite of it's former state It wasn't really what I wanted. There are very few comedic moments and now I'm totally lost when I try to pick it back up again. I do commend the mangaka for what she's trying to do but it's just not a fun read for me anymore. It's strange that even though I'm older now I'd prefer it more innocent.

Things dealing with the darker complexities of life are great but aren't always unless they're done right, especially in the context of an original shoujo. Sweet elementary school kids don't exactly go (for realistic and serious purposes). The lack of comedy adds to the bleak depressing arcs and is too much of a change from before. And the whole corruption of orgs. theme feels a little average and simplistic - once all the characters are pulled into it, what's left to realize and grow from?

To cut the wordy garble (because I could go on): It feels too much like a sweet shounen/shoujo turned crazy dark and depressing. The sun does not shine where they are, and I always thought it would.
