Description
From Viz:
A heart-wrenching single-volume story about the struggles of being an artist, from the creator of Chainsaw Man.
The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.

Note: Nominated for Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia category at the Eisner Awards in 2023.

What? How can this have good ratings? Art is rubbish. Story is trite and takes cues from the Kyoto animation studio incident.

tatsuki fujimoto is a genius, like it or not, his storytelling techniques and his subtlety in the connection between panels and text is impressive, it's practically like watching a movie... and few mangakas have already managed to accomplish this feature while maintaining their visual identity...

This 143 pages of "oneshot" is vastly overrated by the teenaged fans of Chainsaw Man even though the story is nothing original or that emotional if you are actually a regular manga reader for some time. The real advantage of this oneshot manga is that it has 143 pages, which is too many compared to regular oneshots, so it could take time to develop the characters while telling the story. Last but not least, some people, including myself, think that the story's emotional development took a cue from Kyoto tragedy as there are some apparent similarities between the story and the incident:

Look Back is genre defining story that reflects upon the struggles of being a mangaka. The conflict between the drive to succeed and the love of the craft itself are personified by two charming protagonists. Their tale keeps the reader on the edge all thoughout this behemoth of a oneshot. The "show, don't tell" approach of the mangaka compells one to think and review their interpretation of the events unfolding. However, because of subject matter, this work may not be approachable to readers who are not familiar with the inner workings of the manga industry. This isn't just a product but a genuine passion project from Fujimoto-sensei.
