like others said, this manga is going downhill. The formular for EVERY single battle is: strong enemies -> main characters almost die (in about 1-2 chapters) -> because of friendship and that famous skill "belief/hope no jutsu" (in about 3-4 pages) -> main chars win (in about 1-2 pages). seriously, wtfconfused? totally nonsense and it's getting on my nerves. so yeah the plot and development is terrible, boring and looping, with unnecessary fanservice (that's ecchi? i call it almost-hentai).
what happened, Mashima? I remember it used to be so cool....

To be fair, I enjoyed this series when it began. Although it didn't boast particularly new concepts (guilds, friends on magical adventures to fight bad guys, and boobs), the characters were fairly entertaining. I like a loud, boisterous crowd. That's about all this manga provided, however.

The story arcs become repetitive and there is an irritating use of friendship to win battles (which becomes very anticlimactic). Ecchi doesn't bother me in general, but it takes away from the story in Fairy Tail. It is excessive.

While this manga may have been a "fun" read for the first few volumes, it never became thoughtful or surprising. I don't know if there is any hope for Fairy Tail in the future, but for those seeking a solid Shounen now, it is safe to say you will find higher quality characters and story lines in other mainstream manga such as One Piece, Naruto, or Soul Eater.

Side-note: anime had good music, but the art degraded slightly over time and the arcs felt more rushed than in the manga.

I tried the manga once when it was new, judged it as an attempt to rip off One Piece and moved on but on a slow day at my library job i picked up our volumes because i heard some crazy things on the web and flipped through the series again. What i saw was unoriginality to the max, tasteless ecchi(with a scene of sexualized torture standing out), no real stakes or world logic and borderline plagiarism.
Is Kodansha trying to troll Shueisha here ? I saw Franky and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. So the only difference to One Piece is that the manga throws it´s female leads under the bus, has no tone and now 6(?!) spin-offs.
Two points off and zero interest on my side remains. Read Blind Faith Descent or SJ´s stuff.
They at least have a proven formula.

You want some of Fairy Tail? This is how it'd been going until I dropped it at chapter 300 or so:

1. Oh shit, the enemy is too strong. Wonder how we can pull it off this time.
2. This is bad, we are almost destroyed. I'm telling you they're too strong for us.
3. Oh wait, we can still try. C'mon people, they're bad, we can't afford to loose to the bad. This is for friendship (my ass) and justice (puke!)
4. See? We've got new power and magic discovered. Now the enemy is in trouble. Told ya readers, just drag your asses with us over the week and you'll see the glory, and the BOOBs as well. (Mashima Hiro seems never get tired of female character fighting with big boobs holding on to the last of cloth)

The art is not of my taste, too childish. This is personal taste anyway.
The contents is shallow and lame story development has been more and more predictable. The bad guys are just bad for no reason, trying to pick a fight whenever they can with good people. This is the type of story I hate the most. It's just silly to have a clear division of good and bad.

Really? the average score for Fairy Tail is 8.18/10? Really? I personally think this is injustice to the other better series (countless). 5.0/10 is what it worths.

Just Mediocre

I personally love silly stuff (One Piece, Toriko, Gintama, etc.), but I also think that even silly stuff should be intelligent, creative and try its best to be original or at least to have an distinctive “identity”. And there’s where Fairy Tail fails so hard.

The reason I can’t stand mangas like Fairy Tail or Bleach is because they are shallow, typical, predictable and full of asspulls. It is a fact that there’s no manga (especially a shonen manga) that has perfect writing. Even FMA who is a masterpiece on its own has a few asspulls. A FEW. But is not the same when there’s a Deus Ex-Machina in every single important moment or fight (Natsu against the Big Bad of the story arc).

When a said shallow in the previous paragraph I didn’t meant philosophical depth or something similar. I beforehand acknowledge that manga is more a form of entertainment, rather than a form of art. What I meant is that Fairy Tail shows little no almost none sign of thought or genuine work by the mangaka for the story. There’s no world building and there’s no noticeable structure for the concept of magic or wizards. I feel that everything was “made” in a random way. It just feels that anything that is added to this manga is just added for the sake of putting more stuff, instead of a making a contribution for a bigger purpose. Even a kid with a lot of imagination and creativity could have come with something much better than this.

In resume: there’s nothing wrong with a manga that has a ridiculous atmosphere and that doesn’t mean to be artistic in any way. But it is wrong when such manga is not made in a smart, creative, organized fashion and when the author is giving signs that he’s trying to be original.

No character development, no decent plots, humour is kind of forced, lame generic protagonist, female lead is just fanservice/ecchi material, no sense of adventure, arcs feel too separate from each other and overall the whole thing feels like a typical cliche serialized shounen money maker. Mashima-sensei's previous work, Rave Master, was far more entertaining in every aspect.

April 21st, 2014, 2:10pm's a typical shounen predictable with stupid powers that come out from no where...just pathetic to even read it..(even though I don't know why I can't stop reading to it despite these problems....) Characters do not develop...only many villains become good guys...
Whenever they are in the verge to lose, they get the sudden powers from the cliche idea of protecting friends -_-...
Arcs ends so fast and predictable...
Characters; actions are obvious, nothing new.

Title says it all. Every character remains the same, only the plot change. AT LEAST Bleach and Naruto give us an idea on why their protagonists are strong. The authors show how they accumulate strength and skill overtime. With this manga, I don't know how Natsu is able to kick all of his opponents' ass, except he has special dragon magic ability. Good story at first, but gets redundant REEALLY fast.

I admit I loved Fairy Tail. The manga used to be so awesome and the story is really interesting. There were dragons, mages and I loved it. But it has been too long drawn. It seems useless now. All we get to see these days is fanservice...? and just some weird story that isnt interesting anymore. It was so fun earlier. Everything used to fit the spot. But has it lost its essence? There is always those "I have my Nakama by my side so I cant loose" thing... I dont say its bad, but it has gotten quite annoying. And then there is always Natsu coming and saving everyone's a**. I am annoyed sometimes. The latest chapters have been too much. I didnt notice this difference earlier...because earlier it had everything you'd want to read. And during that time, it didn't matter to me even if it was annoying. What is Lucy really? They say she is the Female Lead? What does a Female Lead do? Show her boobs and butt and attract more readers? Lucy is just treated as an object now. And what's more, even Erza and Mira are being pulled into the fanservice thing. They are strong mages whom I admire. Nothing to do except fanservice? I really liked Lucy, and I do say I like her even now. But I have lost hopes in her that she will emerge as some strong mage after few arcs. I really hoped to see her take part in some serious fights but even if her powers are shown at one moment, she is proven to be completely useless in the other. I dont get what's happening anymore. I had high hopes with this series...but I have lost my interest to a point. I dont know what Mashima is thinking. If he thinks he can get more readers by creating a looooong series then he is absolutely wrong. He might very well be loosing his readers. I dont want Fairy Tail to drag me to a point where I call it annoying and start hating it. I loved this series. And I hope we will be seeing something unexpected in the near future that can spark my interest again.

After reading the latest few chapters, I think I might have just lost all my respect for Mashima Hiro. For a while now, the quality of Fairy Tail has been steadily dropping. I stayed with it because I believed the humor was worth reading each new update, because the intros to many arcs are intriguing, because I liked reading Fairy Tail. It was a refreshing break from life, even though I honestly prefer more serious manga.

In the beginning, Fairy Tail is a fun read. Nothing is repetitive, characters are being introduced, arcs explain the stories of the main characters, etc. Sure, there is some fanservice, and for all intents and purposes, seems like pretty much every other battle shounen I had read, but I was interested nevertheless.

Then it starts to get a bit more cliche. Lucy becomes less of a "female lead" and more of a person with giant tits. Big boobs are her entire persona ... Fight scene get a bit repetitive. When we reach the time skip, I quite honestly think I freaked out. Time skips are a big no no for me. It's a stupid, overused way to create drama, to power up the characters (and in this case, the heightened level of power is quickly forgotten) and just NONONONO.

This is when I began noticing things. The Japanese may view manga from a very culturally different standpoint than we. I never quite understood how the same repetitiveness I find in most really famous manga (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc.) could still continue to be so successful. However, I think we share one thing in common. We noticed Fairy Tail was not quite up to par anymore.

The mangaka introduces a ridiculous amount of characters, but the plot never seems to move forward. We are left we the same questions as ever. What happened to the dragons? What happened that day? Who is Zeref?

I suppose a drop in the rankings prompted the manga to include so much ecchi. That is simply my best guess. The fanservice has been so abundant lately that the latest few chapters seem to have been literally cut and paste from some hentai I read. I don't know if adding so many boobs would really increase sales and rankings (Porn is available so freely on the Internet?). It has, however, lost one female reader.
