Been reading this manga on an off since the beginning, mostly off after getting tired of the dragged out story and generic shonen tropes. Honestly this manga should have been wrapped up years ago but hey, cash cow right? I don't think it deserves the glowing reviews it gets but when you pander to the most common denominator of course you get flooded with equally generic knee jerk votes of "10/10 best manga evar!" from people who probably also think Starbucks makes the best coffee.

I've read this before, but it didn't stick to me for reasons I don't remember. Then I got obsessed with Tokyo Ravens (another series with an exorcism school) and I just completely forgot about this series. Now though, years later, I decided to pick it up again.

And I now remember why I dropped it.

These main characters are idiots. All of them. Character development is slow and staggered. The author puts in contrivances and complexity and keeps trying to build up a hype of a big plan and shit, but it all only serves to make you think that everyone's an asshole in their own way. Basically, you have no one to root for. No, not even Rin or Yukio. Actually, ESPECIALLY Yukio, because he seems to just get dragged here and there by his esquire level class even though he should be more experienced. And he can't make up his fucking mind like he's blind to everything that's happening and he doesn't a brain capable of parsing anything that isn't directly in front of his eyes. Goddamn.

I'm at chapter 82 right now. I'm tired. Might drop again tbh.

Extremely slow-paced and 1 decade later

I rmb starting out this series way back and being hyped for 2 anime seasons and movie. Somehow along the way the story is falling apart and nothing has changed in the world (approx 1 yr later) meanwhile, in reality, it's been over a decade of meandering subplots that have gone nowhere.

I feel like this and DGM have a lot of in common with great art but really, really slow and confusing chapters with sudden power-ups for no reason. Another problem is that for female characters they tend to suffer a lot compared to the male characters on different aspects mostly
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
They are always sacrifices for men and end up losing each time except for Shura. It's their main purpose in a series where everyone has special powers but somehow they are always kidnapped
.

Yukio is probably the least liked brother due to a lot of his choices being nonsensical and harmful to himself and everyone for tons of ch. Like maybe he will get better? Probably not. Rin is just sorta there for most scenes the plot drags him along but he hasn't changed much. Honestly Idr much about the side characters other than Sheimi and Shura since there's so many of them other than have mini-arcs that are resolved.

I mean, the easiest way to improve the basic story would streamline the story so we can move on from the flashback arc and progress towards some goal. IDK what is the main problem anymore since we've sealed Rin's demonic powers and they're not anywhere close to graduating HS.

I decide to not finish the stories...

...until the status is completed. At that time, I'll at least read the ending. Lol.

Anyw I stopped at the beginning ark ( I guess )? The story is irritating, not only the main plot but Rin's friends too. The scene is kinda rough sometimes. Err- it's like- jumpy (?) Hmm...

Welp, our main protagonist friends is super annoying for me as well XD. I don't expect a good friendship me-you-forever-friends or something like that, but hecc 🙂)) *I feel like burn his friends into fire*

And that include Shiemi (or whatever she called) too. Only my opinion, oof! XD

I really enjoy the story, of course there is some old shonen troops but that’s doesnt make it bad to the. The characters interaction is fun and enjoyable as I continue to read the story. The fun and dark moments do arise and I can’t wait to read more.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
At first, I was fine with the series. Once you get past the first few chapters, things really get rolling –Rin begins to learn about exorcism and meets his classmates, and there's Shiemi and Yukio. I like the overall relationship between Yukio and Rin – twin brothers who protect each other. The younger twin wants to protect his older brother who has inherited Satan’s power, and the older twin always protected the younger one ever since they were kids. Things were pretty cool with Shura too; a physically strong female character. I like that there is a reason for her to constantly go shirtless, but there seems to be a bit of a boob thing going on… The male characters did comment on her breast size and there was one comment of comparison between two female characters’ breasts… We’ve also got a weak girl who wants to gain confidence and be useful to others, and another girl who does have strength but has a sour attitude. I’d like to see more female characters to have a balance.
The character development disappoints me. An important aspect of this story is supposed to be friendship. But the worst is that Rin’s “friends” aren’t mature enough to accept him after they learn of his heritage. (What’s interesting is that Yukio is also technically Satan’s son, but he does not get any hate whatsoever.) I understand that lots of people fear Satan and have had their family members killed by him, but Rin is not responsible for any of that –there is an instant impulse to lump Rin and Satan together, which I find utterly irrational and unfair for the poor guy. All of a sudden, those “friends” fear and hate Rin even though he would never burst out and smack them. I thought friends were supposed to trust each other, but Kato doesn’t seem to believe so.
The story then babbles on to show different character arcs instead of resolving internal conflicts first. Kato likes to tell, not show. Kato would verbally spit out information instead of doing so subtly, or simply through actions. If the author slows down and resolves these conflicts first, there may be greater character and plot development. The religious chants feel pointless because they do not add to the story overall. The fighting scenes are not impressive –the author lacks creativity.
I’m disappointed in the potential this story failed to show. I would have given this story another chance if the characters were actually likable.

The story SHOULD be simple. Son of Satan learns of his secret heritage and decides to become an exorcist. Cue progressive build-up of power, allies and epic battle after epic battle... right?

It seems like that most of the time, but it never really happens. Instead, the story repeatedly changes focus to one of the side characters without warning and dedicates entire story arcs towards resolving their own secret heritages. Worse, the story repeatedly falls back onto the same exact 'secret legacy' trope.

Ancestor defeated a major demon in the past? Major demon comes back to life and has to be defeated. Again.
Ancestor failed to properly pass down the family secrets? Family secrets come back to bite the current generation in the ass.
Ancestor failed to maintain the family duties? Current generation has to suffer for their failures.

Well, i havnt started reading this yet, but I actually have a question for it. The tag says it has romance. But is it one of those hinted ones, or the ones not involving the main character. But a romance that involves main character which is not just up in the air, but developed? I want to know as I have been searching for a good action manga with romance in it (not the echhi kind)

my gosh! Just like rmvr, I am going to buy this series as soon as I can. Why did I avoid this series for so long?!? It's nothing like I thought it was going to be about! It's awesome! And that's coming from a girl that typically reads shoujo. Not that this is anything like a shoujo. Read it, you'll know what I'm talking about.
