Research material, that didn't blend well with the story

Okay, after a certain time skip, this manga starts to decline in quality, there's lots of references to mythology and Shakespeare's work as well. But they come across as not well utilised, and well if you don't use those aspects well, than you can't blame people for thinking it's pretentious because it shows you don't how to use those quotation or elements well. The princess suffers great character regression, although there are reasons, those reason wasn't enough for some readers to enjoy it. The cheesy romcom subplot has damaged the story greatly. A new character being introduced to the cast didn't help either. Another complaint, as how they explain some origins of the world's current state being outlandish (self-aware), although it comes as jarring with no robust reason or strong thought behind.

Also the concept of destiny and coincidence are used as plot convenience too many times, even the explanation for it is very convenient
This manga uses so much explanation, that some explanation have been repeated TOO MANY times, within a short time span, it's like they thought of it and then we see what they thought being shared to someone else, although it's fine from the character point of view, for readers we can't but for that deja vu feeling, since we seen already in short time span. Repeating explanation or dialogue too much time gets grating, irritating as well. Sometimes they list different type of mythos that leads to same conclusion, which gets bloated with unnecessary dialogue that readers already understand the message. Also the creator, even put a dictionary meaning on some words on panel which is not good eye flow. Some authors are smart and put it a footnote instead, people read manga for art and story, not to read definition out of a dictionary dedicated to a single panel.

Also, I find the main 2 characters, indifference hypocritical, they don't care about others death that many would be shocked, but were affected fuwa, this is not spoiler since it's in beginning of the description, I mean most mourn about others that are close to them, but they won't bat an eye or just don't care, no traumatic experience, they are high school students for goodness and when Fuwa dies, they consider everyone else insignificant which is unrelated and not well written and makes them feel unrealistic in a certain. They are capable of emotion just towards other is the main problem so you can't call them robotic completely. Their reason revolve around fuwa which I find more strange given her dis-likeable personally which is described by the two, but Fuwa isn't all bad which confuses me even more.

This is one of my least favourite manga and think it had such potential as well.

the start was great, yoshino actually had a personality and mahiro had senseless sense.
biggest disappointment was that the characters are shallow, and they have no real depth to them. yoshino became way too "apathetic" and "passive", might i even add that it's because he was a character who "adapted" to things easily that he became boring. the rest of the cast are either too calm, too confident, or too exaggerated to be appreciated fully.
-also story-telling is way too omniscient, in the sense that everyone's able to tell each other's nature in literally one go. basically almost like charting up a "list of characters w/ personalities".

regarding the actual story: sometimes it's best to keep references and ideologies to a simple minimum. midway through to the end, and it's become convoluted with all sorts of mythologies, philosophical theories, and literature. sort of like using big words in a conversation that can do without it, because it's being used superficially and that's what makes it lack depth. essentially it's always better to focus on one or two brilliant things than to try and incorporate a little bit of everything, only to result in a lackluster product. zetsuen no tempest was a little too eager in its attempt to appear as a philosophical and intellectual feed. *put crudely, a big wank really.

made good use of shakespeare's works, and was consistent throughout the story. the art was decent, but quality declined gradually.

As someone who had enjoyed this series since it was first translated, the twist in chapter 30 was the straw that broke the camel's back. The story-line was already shaky with the introduction of a **** character around chapter 23 but still... that was just too weird...

It's great to read it once. but for reread, it's another story...

Well, since you've read it once already, there won't be anymore surprise left as the mysteries are solved

This is much better than the anime. Great art and action from time to time. But I think the best description would be "witty". The story is unpredictable, each character is well portrayed (and awesome), and most of all I just love strategical/psychological battles.

the art is great and i love the depth of the characters
especially Yoshino
there is great mix of fantasy action and mystery,
but the story really involves the charaters state of mind
which i enjoy

I'm avidly following the anime right now. The plot is relatively the same, as far as I can tell... And it moves faster than the manga. Plus the action looks better animated wink

The main characters are deep. They aren't ordinary boys. This character's depth keeps things interesting because they are unpredictable. My favorite character is Yoshino.

Illustration is quite cute, though I like the one in the anime way better.

This series leaves me on the edge of my seat wanting to read more. With the writing skills of Shirodaira Kyou who did Spiral which is one of my favorite series. This story is about Yoshino and Mahiro who want to find the killer of Mahiro's sister Aika in order to get revenge. Mahiro has been searching with the help of Hakaze a magician stuck on a deserted island only able to contact him through a magic doll. This series is filled with betrayal, mistrust, and interesting characters who will do what they must, throw in some interesting plot twists and you have this great story which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

To add in a comment about what blackmokona in the post underneath said the story is not really made into some epic fantasy but more about the characters and especially Aika's death and the mystery surrounding it.

Let's review. What's at stake? The world, right? This manga can't take that the world is important for granted, it has to show why we should care whether or not it's saved. Because we have no reason to care, there's so little tension.

IMHO, the only interesting character is Yoshino. His function is for me to sympathize with and that vulnerable face and the hair clips and his being a bit messed up and comfortable with violence help. Evangeline is fanservice, and adds to the belief that female characters have to be awesome to exist.

But biggest complaint: Zetsuen no Tempest is trying to establish an epic fantasy. Epic starts with small, like showing what crops up to deal with the disease, charms, entertainment, yakuza involvement? What has changed beside a mountain of corpses, panic wave, alliances between nations? If ZnT wants the scale of the military attack, it has to do the grunt work too. Add that to the uninspired fights, the fantasy it has achieved is merely a backdrop for character interaction

The art is inconsistent. Because it *can* be so gorgeous, lacking scenes with the wrong and rather unfortunate proportions are especially jarring. Long hair is perennially stiff. But on the whole it *is* gorgeous, the designs absolutely breathtaking, so that's a big plus.

At the end, storytelling gets more sloppy. Did many characters just flat out tell us how the situation is, how everybody stands with each other, how marvelous Yoshino's plotting becomes? Yeah. But I do like him so much, and that keeps me reading.

Edit: OMFG it's gotten so so full of itself, not that that's actually disappointing since expectations were low to begin with, but those chapter are the epitome of telling and not showing, because they all stand there telling the readers how ingenious Yashino is, while the twist is actually dumb and contrived.
