this is one of the better BL novels i've read recently. it has a very japanese feel, with its adoring description of ordinary people doing their ordinary jobs exquisitively well (it matters much more that they do it well than what it actually is), all the loving detail of the food our protagonist gets to eat, as well as the attitude people have towards their relationships (some of which will strike westerners as decidedly odd). there is an actual plot that's not simply concentrating on the romance, yay, and the romance itself takes quite a while to develop. the author throws in some interesting supporting characters which are mostly just sketched, but about whom i wouldn't mind reading more in future works. last but not least, the uke is a strong, determined, competent man; no crybaby girlyboy here.

the illustrations are so-so. i like enjin's manga work, but here some of the proportions are off. but eh -- illustrations don't matter much for me in novels; they're a bonus but not essential. the translation flows well enough, and the copy editor was present for this novel. still no honorifics though, which bugs me a little because a translation to english titles always loses information.

the only drawback for me is that despite the slow development of the romantic relationship, the first sexual encounter borders on rape, and i've read about all the rapey BL i can handle for the month. but since the uke is already interested in the seme instead of totally surprised, unwilling, and disgusted, it's not as bad as it could be -- for BL land that is. those who are very sensitive to any forced sex should probably beware.
