Better than the anime

Which I found to be sooooo boring and repetitive. Unlike the anime, Golgo is slightly more of a character instead of a terminator robot. He smirks when things go his way, he gets pissed when they don't, he has to work a bit for his kills, and makes mistakes. Of course he's still quite the killing machine but the elements I mentioned make it more interesting.
The way the story flows is also different and less formulaic. In the anime, you can pretty much guess how things will go within one episode. These stories aren't self contained to one chapter, so things cook at a simmer. Potentially, the story might show multiple sides, or different pieces of an elaborate plan before or during Golgo's time to shine.
I don't know if the character morphs into the more boring version that's in the anime but until that happens, I'm glad I gave this a chance.

Severly underappreciated

This is a criminally overlooked series. It may not have the fast paced storytelling or over the top characters manga readers typically enjoy, Golgo 13 is one of the most intelligently written, action packed and dramatic series ever to emerge from Japan. It's a breath of fresh air to someone like me to read a manga that truly strives to be serious, mature, and action packed in a realistic manner.
I can understand that most people would find it boring because there is a lot of character development and build-up. To some, the energy it takes to try and read through a story is immense given the lack action packed breaks in the story. The real pay-off of the story usually occurs at the end when Golgo 13 carries out his assignment. But it isn't until you realize that how he is able to pull it off is all the more impressive given the story developments that leads up to it.
It's still a shame that there's only been a few official translations in America, which is understandable as this series is still running to this day since it made its debut in 1968. While I am happy some effort was made to scanlate the earliest volumes of this series, I doubt we'll never be able to read all of the stories in English given how many volumes there are and the difficulty it would take just to track them all down given their age.
At the very least the TV series very faithfully adapted 50 select episodes (26 so far have been released in English with all 50 available for download in fan subbed format) from the manga, meaning that if you watch an episode, you've practically just read the entire manga story it's based on.
Just like Golgo's targets, this manga hits the mark.

i read this up to chapter three and i still couldnt tell what the point of the story was. is golgo hoping to become the best mercenary? is it a chronicle of his life? what?
there are no characters(from what ive read) that appear again aside from the chapter they show up in....
golgo is a weirdo. he sleeps with random women, he calls the helper lady 'beautiful woman' even after
he doesnt seem to have any morals, except he seems to be a little softer on girls than guys, and hes only doing the assasin thing for money?
and then what is money if there is nothing else you like?
3/10 for boring me

Well, maybe it's because the manga's from a loonng time ago (1968 - exactly 40 years ago!). Plus there's 142 volumes. I think that's the longest one I ever seen.

From what I've read the official translators have just been translating select (and rather dodgy sounding) stories from this manga.
How come no Scanlators have picked up the slack and started a proper translation?
