Vampires exist. It is the duty of Hellsing, an organization sponsored by the British government, to hide that frightening fact and protect the blissfully unaware populace. Along with its own personal army, Hellsing also has a few secret weapons. Alucard, an incredibly powerful vampire, has been controlled by Hellsing for years. Although he dislikes being a servant to the Hellsing family, he certainly enjoys his job as Hellsing’s vampire exterminator. Seras is a fledgling vampire and a former police woman. Although reluctant to embrace her new self, she is still a valuable member of the organization. Integra Hellsing, the current leader, is usually fully capable of fulfilling her duty, but lately, vampire activity has been on the rise. Unfortunately, the cause is more alarming than anything she could have imagined. A group long thought dead has been plotting in secret since their apparent destruction over 50 years ago. Plotting to plunge England, and perhaps the entire world, into war.
10 Volumes (Complete)

For me, there will never be a manga about vampires that is cooler than Hellsing.

Characters
mostly insane characters, it won't get you bored. and don't expect good character or bad character... most of them are insane and twisted. except Integra. she's not really right in the mind, but I love my Integra -
Plot
Not that deep, but I love the ending, it's like, I dunno, something that befit a monster, not exactly a happy ending, but still a redemption -
Art
One of my favourite, till now it gives the color to other seinen story
Must read / watch (the OVA)
I was surprised to discover that it's partially a ripoff of Master of Mosquiton. an older anime/manga about a girl who awakens a white haired vampire named Alucard. But the similarities pretty much end there. (Mosquiton was made by the creator of vintage anime like Saber Marionette J, Sorcerer Hunters, & Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.) & then you have the white haired Alucard from Castlevania. Alucard was of course created by the Siodmak brother in 1943, & none of the Alucards have anything in common with that version.

This manga is pretty good, it has all the stuff you might want if you came here. Vampires, werewolves, gore, insanity, mystery and some slight comedy. We have vampire nazis, crazy religious people and whatever else you could think of. I find it to be quite interesting and was quite fond of the characters although I can honestly say that I didn't really feel that connected to them(by that I mean that I didn't really care much about anything that happened to them and neither did I ever feel that I hate the enemies or slightly worried/annoyed about someone from the main cast), I also liked the expressions and drawing style, but I won't care to go deeper into the reasons why I like it since so many has done this before. I'll instead go through the things that
Okay, let's start off with the biggest issue. Endless prattling and needless use of foreign phrases. The last few volumes felt like somewhat of a chore to read at times because the people just talk and talk and talk about pretty much nothing, it mainly shows how they're insane and have twisted logic or views of things. When people was doing that, you could skip the entire chapter and not miss anything much. The translations weren't bad, but I was honestly annoyed by the often severely overdone dialects and other things that are there just to show that "oh, they're from the countryside" "Oh, they're from britain" "Oh, they're from germany". Sometimes it was nigh unreadable. I feel like it's purely a detriment, we already know they're from these countries and places, why force the readers to search the dictionary for weird words no one ever uses or foreign language phrases/words?
The next thing is that this thing feels pretty silly and pretentious at times, as if it's trying too hard to be cool and ends up like something you'd find in a chuunibyou's head. Everyone's pretty much utterly insane and their reasons for doing things are usually truly retarded. We don't grasp any true motivations or deep underlying reasons for anything, there's no real "goal" and it feels pretty lacking because of that. The main guys are just responding to the enemies and the enemies just want war while pretty much everyone of these monsters seems suicidal and wants to die in combat as if it's the ultimate pursuit. As everyone is crazy and no one makes much sense, it just feels empty in a way.
Maybe it has to do with me growing up and going through so many different novels, manga and anime, but I really can't enjoy many parts of this manga like I did back then. I easily notice so many flaws and weird parts that just doesn't make sense. I also felt like the gore was pointless at times. This thing is full of gore, or rather, full of deaths and bodies, but it also manages to completely disconnect the readers from the entire thing. I've gone through quite a few disturbing works, and "hellsing" is way too tame, which further detracts from the reading experience. There's no feeling that these people are humans or even alive, it's more like he's attacking and killing straw dolls, no one cares and it's just pointless. The gore is usually just black parts as well, there's no great detail given to innards or anything else, it feels unrealistic. It's to the point where a complete rookie could read this without being disturbed much at all. It's not as if you feel a little bit disgusted or ill at ease either, which is yet another reason as to why this whole thing feels childish at times.
Oh, and I wish there was more scenes with lolicard(the female version that shows up in the prequel and in the last few chapters of this manga). Her personality is way more interesting compared to alucard's male form and would've made for a better main character. The impact of a black loli murdering everyone is also much greater than some random big dude. Too bad.
That, amongst some other things, are what removes 2-3 points from this manga. I made it sound as if it's horrible in my review, but it's actually quite enjoyable, especially the first time you read it or if you're not as deep into the shithole of endless manga/novels/anime that I and many others are. If you haven't read much horror/gore focused stuff, this is bound to be a fresh and awesome experience, it could also serve as a good starting point to explore this type of stuff. Give it a try, no matter what it's truly a must-read. I also recommend the second anime version, hellsing ultimate, the OVA anime. They made a sweet job with that one. The first version is garbage though, don't bother. That's it for me, well done on making it to the end.

Honestly this story is a showoff of the unlimited powers of count Vlad the Dracula a.k.a. Alucard. Filled with gore this story might seem initially to another one of those mindless killing machine mangas; but pray don't stop reading it. This manga is much more than blood and gore. Each character has his/her respectable awesomeness. and then there is Alucard awesomeness hovering above all. This story has one of the most amazing villains I've seen. And also the most amazing ending I've seen.
And not station character development is also seen diligently by the author.
It is advised to read the prequel to the story as well (hellsing: the dawn) to understand the origins of the Major.
When its sheer power that's concerned, ppl talk about dbz. well funk dbz, Alucard will pwn you anywhere anytime.
I'd definitely suggest you to read this manga. go for it.
This is probably the best manga I've ever red. While the main story doesn't kick of until volume 3, the humor, art and gory dismemberment of bodies make this a must read if you don't mind tons of blood, gore and swear words.
The story isn't the most interesting out there, nor the most complex and the fights are somehow predictable. The dialogs can be confusing sometimes (don't know if it's because of the translation or they didn't make sense in japanese either). However, what makes this manga really entertaining is the main character, Alucard. There are so many mangas, animes, movies and books that portray vampires as something else other than the monsters they are. This manga truly captures the real nature of the vampire. Alucard is ruthless and, cruel, truly enjoys killing, torturing and humiliating his opponents. He is proud and arrogant, treats almost everybody as inferior beings, however, he is also fascinated by humans. He's a very complex character and as his story unfolds you can't help but like him.
When I tell people about this series, they are putt off by the idea of vampires, thinking of the girly shojo-type. However, the vampires in this manga are brutal, monstrous, insane, and refreshing. There is also the religious fanaticism of a Catholic Holy Army, and the political fanaticism of an army of Nazi Vampires. You just gotta love it.
I think the plot was very original (shame too many people can't see it) and as a seinen fan, Hellsing truly satisfies you with the action, blood, and gore. I like how Hirano rewrites the daily definition of the "vampire" into something unique and creative (despite how lazy he can be) and overall I think the manga is awesome. This is not for tards and shojo fans of course.
