Haru visits Canada to spend the summer holidays in the woodland house of his strict, strong-willed mother, Haruko. There, she burdens him with the responsibility of caring for his younger adoptive brother - a wild and unruly little boy named Ren who trusts no-one and prefers to wander in the woods with Haruko's dogs rather than associate other people. Haruko orders Haru to 'civilize' Ren. As the young man strives to teach Ren how to live in human society, their relationship gradually improves - so much so that Haru plans on taking his 'little brother' to Japan with him once he finds a job.
Unfortunately, fate has a cruel habit of interfering with one's plans.

I'm disappointed
Rating: 1.8 / 10.0

So... I've just done watching 18 episodes of Super Lovers (anime ver., since I figure it should be close to the manga ver.), and boy it's so disappointing.

First I gotta make some stuff clear. I disapprove underage relationships in real life, but in manga/anime, since it's just fictional, I kinda accept it. Afterall, these types of media are where people get to express their wild fantasies.

Now back to the main thing. For season 1, I liked it. Everything's the typical fluff that yaoi series usually have (not that I don't like them or sth), but then in season 2, as soon as drama starts to creep in, everything just kinda went downhill. Haru becomes increasingly more overprotective, and would get mad at pretty much anything Ren does that is "too grown-up for him". Like for God's sake, your age of consent is 13! He should be able to start doing something that helps him become more mature, yet, in episode 8 of season 2, you said that you wanted to spoil him and treat him as a kid, regardless of his feelings, and I'm just like whyconfused If you have decided to devote your love to Ren, then how come you're annoyed at pretty much anythingconfused

At this point I start to feel bad for Ren. Watching through 18 episodes, I've just realized that the only reason Ren ever fell in love with Haru is because he's the one that exposed him to the world. I mean, yeah it's definitely a fantastic thing to do, but because of that, Ren did not have a chance. He couldn't be away from Haru and explore the world without him, simply because it would hurt Haru. Also, even when Ren's at his peak anger point (the scene at Natsuo's apartment), he couldn't do anything. His feelings are bound by Haru. He had no other choices, no power, no nothing. He's bound to be with Haru. And everything keeps going like that, to the point that I am genuinely irritated by just how shallow their love is. A choiceless kid who has zero freedom of love and an overprotective brother. That does not sound like a good pairing. And it isn't.

I'm giving this thing a 1.8. 1 point for the mininum score, 0.5 points for Shima, aka the only rational person here, and 0.3 points for the lovey dovey moments (though it never went all the way through because of Haru).

Super Lovers is a manga fill with many taboos. Not only is the relationship in it homosexual, in some sense, it can be consider pedophilia and incest as well. Which means that there are many filters for a person to by pass in order to read this manga without being clouded by their bias.

I think Super Lovers is unique in that it doesn't rely on Shoujo BL smut. Of course there is BL moments but that is not what makes the manga good. What makes the manga good is the personalities of the characters and the interactions between the characters. In other words, there is actually some depth to the story line rather than just fangirl service. It's a manga that people who don't like BL can enjoy if they can see past the BL.

In terms of story, a lot of people sees Haru's and Ren's relationship as a stall. People are saying that they should have sex already or that the drama is just to prolong the manga. I however, disagree.

In the manga, Ren is only a child. There is a lot of things that he doesn't know which he needs to develop. Much like the people that has commented here, when Ren doesn't get what he wants, he lash out in anger. For Ren, it is hard to understand Haru's intention because he can only see his side of the story. That is why he gets wary and insecure because he don't know what Haru's intentions are. This is every apparent through out the story. In other words, Ren is not mature enough to be in a relationship yet. Age is not the problem here.

Haru on the other hand is an adult. He understands that Ren is still a child. If he were to do something to compromise Ren, he will be restraining Ren's choice in life. That is why he refrained from crossing that line. Yet, he still loves Ren. That is why he try to test Ren so that Ren will remain in love with him. Ultimately speaking, Haru has the shorter end of the stick here. He can't commit to Ren completely because Ren's feelings might change once he grow up. He can't half ass Ren either because he will be running the risk of losing Ren. It's a lose lose situation. All he can do is stall until Ren mature and hope that Ren still loves him.

I think people these days have lost the ability to sympathize. Most people read manga in their point of view and only their point of view. They've forgotten to step out of their shoes to put themselves into the shoes of another person. That is why they hate things that don't go the way they want rather than trying to understand why things went the way it did.

The biggest letdown amongst BL manga and no it's not the May-December relationship/Pedophilia

Years later, and I think I've come back to my senses. What would Super Lovers, Love Stage, Junjou Romantica, and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi have in common? All have shallow stories going roundabouts. At least all except Super Lovers already settled the romance. Fluffy read alright, slow-paced romance okay but the entire plot isn't even going anywhere. The May-December relationship is not even annoying, but the plot being stuck and stagnant is. Aside from the very likeable Shima (prolly the only rational character in this story), the kid always picking fights with Ren and Ren especially when he's with that kid, and the side story among those three adults, nothing else makes me want to re-read it again, as far as it being a BL is concerned. Somehow, it became more or less like the same mangaka's own work, Komatta..., and I dropped that one as well. The characters are just so getting into my nerves especially Haru. Disappointing when it has such beautiful art. I admit to loving this series when I started reading BL but if you're looking for more poignant and interesting manga, this is not it.

I don't read yaoi often. I can't help it, I need cute girls or else I lose interest.

This one managed to keep my interest. I loved the character interactions and how the romance was progressing until
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Haru "helped" Ren jerk off. I wanted to call the police at that moment. I was turning a blind eye to the age gap and Haru's possessiveness and then the lenses fell out of my rose-tinted glasses. I get that this is fictional fujioshi fuel, but the way they interacted after that was so creepy I had to drop this. And I don't get why Haru is "waiting" for Ren to grow up when he's literally molested the kid...

All in all, this is just another yaoi. I should have looked at the tags before reading it.

I don't have any special interest in Yaoi / Shounen Ai series, but I could not stop reading this series due to the gorgeously drawn characters, touching & interesting romantic development, unique character personalities, and flawless pacing. The plot is awesome too.

Really, this manga is just.... GREAT. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much that i would pull an all-nighter to catch up to latest chapter! This author has a lot of thought-provoking themes along with the light hearted comedy.

What is the line between a "child" and an "adult?" Does a 17 year old "kid" become an adult when he turns 18 the next day? What are peoples' insecurities and misperceptions? This series gets pretty deep while also getting me addicted to the spicy action! I love it!

ren falling for haru isn't as far fetched as some seem to think.
ren was severely abused and treated like an animal before he came to live with haru's mom. haru brought him out of his isolation and taught him all his basics; i.e. how to hold his tableware, the need to wear shoes, and so on. haru was the first decent person to connect with him (haru's mom made things worse at first), and in this story ren is completely haru-centric. his world, especially at the beginning, revolves completely around this person. part of the ongoing story is about ren learning to make connections with other people.

as for people saying that no kid would act as mature as ren, again, i disagree.
ren is extremely intelligent, and most highly intelligent kids act older than their age. add to that his early horrible traumatic experiences and you've got a kid whose brain runs at light speed and whose life experiences far outweigh most kids his own age. hell, his life experiences outweigh a lot of adults i know now.

and on top of that, once haru "tamed" the wild beast, ren spent the next several years in the company of adults. only adults. its no surprise to me that he would be far more mature than kids his own age and i'm surprised, given this background, that people seem to think he acts too mature for his age.

on another note, the japanese school system is different than ours. ren would have been 15 when he graduated jr high, not 13. so he's 15-16 when they move into the house. whether you count that as shota or not is up to you i guess. most kids fool around at least a little by that age and i don't have a problem with it in this case.

i also don't really have a problem with the age gap. there are a TON of shoujo stories out there with a 15-16 yr old high school girl dating her teacher or someone else with the same age gap so it seems hypocritical to condemn it in this story just because they're both guys.

lastly, they're not blood-related nor were they raised together. there's no incest taboo to break because there is no incest.

as you might guess, i like the story. i always enjoy abe miyuki's work, which tends to make me stop and think a bit, and the art is lovely.

for those who find the contents offensive but enjoy the art i suggest you try Komatta Toki ni wa Hoshi ni Kike! instead, its barely shounen ai and the mc is an only child.

One of the best Yaoi manga

I heard that there will be anime version of this manga coming out >.< this is seriously one of the best yaoi, i know a lot of you disgusted by the relationship between haru n ren, but for me, Im totally ok with it. For those who said that there will be no child like Ren exists in real life, I just want to tell u all that I myself have a sister that acts like Ren (only that she is a girl and she can be considered as mature at early age) .. and I did found out that this manga took more time to read than other manga.. I used 3 hours straight to finish 15 chapters and now my eyes are so tired =.= maybe because they have 50-60 pages in a chapter?

Although there are some reviewers saying that Haru is a pedophile and that they're committing incest.. this is not quite true. First of all, they're not actually brothers and Ren wasn't really raised by Haru from birth so I wouldn't consider this incest just because they share a common name. Also, they don't have very much of an age gap, and the only reason why their relationship would make anyone uncomfortable is the fact that Ren is so young when they start being sexually attracted to one another. However, its actually quite normal for him to start feeling this way towards the person that he loves since he is a teenager and going through puberty at this point. Although, I will warn that there are parts towards the second half where Haru touches Ren, and some may find that uncomfortable.

In any case, I really enjoy reading this manga. The whole process of Ren growing up was shown in a very natural and realistic manner. Reading through the different stages of his childhood and all the conflicts he encounters at school, with his family, and his love life is like watching a flower blossom.

Yes, it's kinda have similiar story like Oniichan to Issho. The difference is just Super lovers is yaoi and the other is straight love.
It's story about not related blood sister like/love each other with the oldest brother.

I don't think the age gap between Haru and Ren is that big, the thing is that at first Ren is too young, but at chapter 22 he's already 16 years old (if this was a story about a 20 year old guy dating a 30 o more year old man, no one would say the age gap is big...). And how a lot of reviewers already said, at first it's not really yaoi because there's nothing really going between them, they start developing feelings but it's nothing explicit, it's cute and really lovely.
So I don't think this is shota, it's not incest either (they're not really sibilings, you know), and I don't think the plot is unconfortable... It's just like any other yaoi there is, but the story take a lot more time-gap to develope (and I found this like a good thing).
I love this one a lot, and I think it's one of my favorite yaoi. It's cute, touching, funny and sad, and the art is just amazing =) The worst thing is that it takes a lot of time to update hehehe
