Description
From Yen Press:
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE DOWNRIGHT WEIRD.
The Ikebukuro district in Tokyo is full of interesting people. A boy longing for the extraordinary. A hotheaded punk. An airheaded pseudo-stalker. An information broker who works for kicks. An underground doctor who specializes in truly desperate patients. A high school student infatuated with a monster. And a headless rider on a pitch-black motorcycle. Their story may not be a heartwarming one, but as it turns out, even weirdos like these sometimes fall in love.

Great themes. Many memorable lines. Interwoven stories of many fascinating characters. Extremely interesting relationships.
And the second most awesome antagonist I've ever known, next to Joshua Kiryuu (with whom I swear they would be BFF).
What's best about Izaya is that I've never seen another antagonist like him. Oscar Wilde's line, his favourite quote, really describes his nature, I think: "It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious." What's amusing is that he is both endearing, drop dead sexy, and very annoying (even that is endearing). He's obnoxiously philosophical, never shuts up, profound, and very, very human.
What drives him isn't some cliched hatred or revenge, but a twisted love for humanity. He doesn't have a backstory--he grew up in a normal family.
Let's not forget the most badass ex-bartender of all time, Shizuo. There are no words to describe how epic he is. Rather, he doesn't use words, since he is violence incarnate, after all. I'm not sure what he is, because he's not a traditional tsundere. His character is also very interesting, but my complaint is that in more recent volumes,
He should end up with either
a) someone who can keep him calm, who never riles him up (Kasuka, Tom, Vorona.) Someone that isn't afraid of him, who he isn't afraid that he'll hurt (which is impossible, because he can't control his strength--this way would change who Shizuo is).
b) someone who drives him completely over the edge (you know where I'm going with this). Someone who he isn't afraid of hurting, someone who matches his strength with another kind of strength.
Mikado, aka Bosskado, makes for a wonderful decoy protagonists (I didn't even know those existed!) The trio just gets more and more interesting.
Ahh, Shinra and Celty are one of the few NL pairings I actually support. For good reason, too. You'll find no other couple like them. They're very amusing together. Generally, the fandom's favourite quote is from Celty:
This series has its flaws, of course, but overall the most important factor is there: It's super interesting.
I consider this one of those series that people can't go without reading/watching.

he's changed. It's for the better (is it really?), but it makes him a very dull character. His romance with Vorona, from what I know, is predictable, cliche, and boring.

i love this author. he is my only favorite author because all other authors, american, manga, english, anything they just can't compare to him. ryogho narita's works are pure insanity focusing on one subject.(i think) for this one he focused on love. love is a boring subject, but if you read this you'll see the many other brances of love that people usually put with the bad. this series was the first i've read of his works and it completely woken up my insanity. like i say to those who have yet to experience it "welcome to insanity"
Baccano fan as well

Definitely a must read.
I've read the manga, watched the anime, read a bunch of doujins,bl, just about anything you can name regarding this series.... even cosplayed as the characters. I like the multiple perspectives of the story and the way the characters develop throughout the series. There's always a twist to the story without much cliches and just keeps you hooked.

this series was suggested to me by my cousin (and he doesn't suggest boring things,so I thought it was best to check this out).
the spin-offs,the art,the story-this is something not seen in everyday life. I am also trying to watch the anime, which made me love the series more. At first, you might not get the story, but as you go through it,you will appreciate it and be in awe of the different perspectives.
enjoy durarara! : )

1 of the best underrated light novels out there. it is very interesting and clever. as there are many main characters, it will start as a little confusing, but still interesting although creepy, and it'll just get better and better. the characters are very interesting, and for me are what makes this novel great.
