Description

A bit disappointed

I was really excited to read this after such glowing reviews because more often than not will they turn out to be true, but I think it wasn’t the case this time. There were things well done such as the political intrigue, because when a comic runs for 180 chapters you know that it has to be interesting to keep up the whole time. At least for me the politics gets old and boring super fast, but not here. Something else were the character’s motivations, faults, desires; it was enough to drown in and I constantly kept trying to figure out the characters better by referencing other moments or things they said and I found it impossible. You just have to give up and analyze what they are doing in the moment… The one thing I didn’t like in regards to the characters’ creation was a lack of explanation on their background. Well, enough was honestly said for the crown prince, but I wanted so bad to know in detail Suu’s background! We got just a little. There were theories as to what Suu really was, such as a dragon or a prince too and such a thing could have been so interesting, but he was just a servant. They didn’t even explain how he regained his hearing. Because it made the sacred script seem special for him, but nope. Just had a talent for learning languages. I kind of felt that the author had forgotten about it.

As for the ending,

I did not like it whatsoever. It was open-ended, didn’t tie up the remaining threads of the romantic relationships, were they all in a relationship together?? It’s fine if they’re polyamorous but the dragon and the prince despise each other??? Isn’t that just cheating on Suu’s part????? The ending felt just a bit abrupt too. Read it and thought to myself, “that’s it..?”

I’m glad I read it at least, because I really felt for the main character and wanted him to be happy although

come to think of it he should have been more distraught at his friend’s death, and by the end completely forgot about his existence because I just remembered too that he is in fact still alive!? Never mentioned again!

He is still the best though even if a lot of his actions are questionable. But he was put into that position you can hardly criticize him harshly. I think for the majority of the comic I just wanted him to run away and forget everything that had happened because hoo boy there was nothing going for him in Rahan. He shoulda honestly gone back to his country or another and found a nice wife cause his history with men was NOT healthy. Though I changed my mind by the end because him and the prince genuinely loved each other and were cute together even if it was bittersweet.

So anyways, yeah, I’d read it. I just wouldn’t reread it.

Ugh I accidentally just read something really amazing

I came across this in the middle of an extended BL romance binge, feeling lucky to have found something so long and highly rated.

Well, I see why it's so highly rated, but it totally ruined my romance binge! The characters are all realistically contradictory, and they don't make sweeping sacrifices purely for the sake of true love. Even the bad guys aren't evil, and the good guys aren't good. But it's also not one of those stories that uses selfishness as a shortcut to realism.

I've been reading so many straightforward romance stories that I was initially really uncomfortable with the pacing, especially the way that not everything is explained right after it shows up in the story. Even after 180 chapters, I still have questions. I want to know more! I wish everything was spelled out and all the loose ends were tied up perfectly!

But actually, reading this was really satisfying. This is really very sound storytelling. The pacing is consistent, you learn everything you need to know when it's most impactful. Even though you have a privileged view into all three main characters' perspectives, you don't know everything. You can still be surprised and confused and angry and anxious along with them.

It took me a few tries to get into this, because I could tell it wasn't going to give me the instant gratification I was looking for. And, honestly, I never really got ANY gratification. But I loved it, and I can tell I'll read it again and again and again and keep enjoying it.

the FEELS

The outcome of the story isn't something new and pretty forseeable, but it was told so beautifully after 100 chapters I was still yearning to read more. 'Yearning' because that's the main motive in this story, which the author explores so vividly in a poetic way. Consequently, the characters were just as layered as the feeling of 'yearning' can be, their dynamics were written really well. The love tri-angle might get tedious at times but the author portrayed it weirdly functionally dysfunctional.

Unique story worth reading

Before I started reading this I've seen many opinions that this story is confusing, and personally I didn't find anything hard in understanding the plot, but this is maybe because I've read the whole thing after it was already finished and during a short amount of time (4 days).
I just couldn't stop reading, it was so enthralling. No one in here was black or white, each of those characters had flaws but even so they were likeable and easy to root for. Plot was something else, I'm not sure if I ever will be able to find something similar to this to fill this hole I had made finishing this so quickly.
Last but not last, art was unique and adorable, this is not one of those series where castle-nim makes cameos. Unfortunely I didn't take a good look at the horses, but if there were something wrong with them I would probably notice, so they must've been fine. Denifitely worth reading if you are looking for memorable shounen ai series where not everything is so clear at first and wild ride.

I'm really surprised this one isn't more popular. The story is interesting, the art is amazing, the characters and the world are enjoyable.
Main leads are cunning, lovable and you just can't help but root for the happy ending (honestly, they all went through too much). They don't fall in love like crazy from the beginning, on the contrary, everyone is very cautious with their feelings. Very well played love triangle, as it really is difficult to predict what the author wants to achieve in the end.

I'm afraid it will end up in a tragedy, however, I feel it may actually stay a triangle and leave it at this since they all need each other. I'm at chapter 171 and it seems like Suu will drastically change later and crown prince will be hurt though, so tragedy is more likely.

What I like the most is that every character is multidimensional. They seem to try being good people but do a lot of bad stuff and try to live with that. They also try to trust and love but their previous experiences make them snap sometimes, just like normal human beings. They seem smart but because of some traumas, they sometimes act stupid and ridiculous. Even the side characters have well developed personalities. This is exactly why I like long webtoons - the author has time and space to develop the story and show many sides of their characters and this is a perfect example of that.
Very recommended.

After finishing the whole story - I am a little bit dissappointed in th last few chapters. It looks rushed but still, the journey was enjoyable 🙂
