boring

I rated it like that 'cause this manga is getting boring (--_____--) It was really interesting at first though. I read it for two days (up to ch 21), but when I read the rest, my opinion regarding this changed. It's like my typical manga where there will be love triangles or the like and the heroine having bad times because of his hero. And serously, that Narumi friend's character is totally annoying. She's like an attention-seeker―spreading the fact that your parents are divorced so that people will feel sorry for you. =w= ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

siggghhh... As they say, not everything goes the way you planned. The one thing I hope for this manga is that it should end its drama scenes cause its getting annoying and boring =P That's just my opinion, 'kay?

btw, i'm not gonna update this comment of mine unless the story interest me again >__<

Pretty good

A well done shoujo romance series, but it feels like a 10 volume detour just to drop you back where things were naturally going in the 3rd volume. Could've done with more set-up for the rival characters much earlier but at no point does the author ever convince you that she's not just stringing you along to a foregone conclusion. I felt like there were multiple instances in which the author built up climactic moments for the characters to finally crack and shout out how they really feel, only for someone to get interrupted or for a tense arc to simply fizzle out as characters just sort of wander off with no resolution. The moral of the story ends up being that it doesn't matter if you blow your first chance, second chance, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, or even eleventh chance, because you'll always have ONE more chance to finally say the thing everybody knows you've been meaning to say for 12 volumes and wrap up the story! And it doesn't help that you never really *like* Kou. Like he goes from a legitimately awful, AWFUL person who treats Futaba like a plaything to a pretty decent guy, but you never really get what Futaba sees in him. A classic "show, don't tell" writing dilemma.

It may sound like I'm ragging on the story (and trust me it's not fun to watch these two kids trample on the people around them just to finally close, in Futaba's words, that "one millimeter gap" they had less than a quarter into the series) but it does do a good job of tugging your heart strings along and felt like a real page turner.

Futaba decides to change so that she is no longer the person she used to be, however when she meets her old classmate from middle school, Kou, who happens to also be her first love, she realized that she isn't the only who has changed.

Seeing how "Ao Haru Ride" was one of the very first manga that I read, I initially gave this a higher rating. Most shoujo manga have love triangles, timid female leads, "popular" male leads who everyone falls in love with even though they are jerks with bad pasts that don't justify their actions? Yes, this manga had all of these elements yet if frustrated me even more than other series that I have read.

I tried reading this a second time but could not get past the first few chapters, why? Well because even though the main leads got their happy ending, I was not satisfied with end. What about the second male lead, and all the other characters? Were they simply there so misunderstandings and drama could be created between Futaba and Kou? There were characters added towards the second half of the story, such as Kou's old friend and the guy who had a crush on Futaba but in the end, they are never mentioned again.

The art was very nice and it's such a shame that the story had so much potential and yet it was not to my liking.

Amazing art, but...

I picked this up because I'm a sucker for pretty drawings. I really loved the art. But that's about it.

This manga was "so shoujo" that I couldn't take it anymore; I stopped after finishing ch 14. And I'm glad I did, because I'm seeing lots of people complain about the latter part where more characters get introduced (oh no).

From the beginning, you can already see how the story is going to go. What I mean by this manga being "so should" is that the plot moves forward in an unrealistic way. The characters are likeable up to where I stopped, but you can't help but think "seriously, these kids aren't real".

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
For example, the way that it was revealed how Kou's mother passed away and that was this was why it affected his studies and his personality. Also, everything that the two main characters did was so off-putting. Just the way the story was running did not make sense or settle well for me.

Maybe I'm growing old and cynical, but I couldn't take the shoujo-ness of it anymore. My tolerance has a limit and even good art couldn't save it. Maybe one day if I want to kill time, I will finish it -- but I feel like I'd regret finishing it. This was a nice part to end off at, so I better not ruin the impression even further...

It's hard for me to write a review since it was such a long time ago. I remember when it was released, it was one of the first shoujos i've ever read and got so attached to it. But i remember after some drama and denial parts i got tired and dropped it for some time and eventually forgot about. Then I reread it and I'm glad i did. Not sure if its just me being biased but it was nice getting a closure with this manga. so thats why I'm rating it high even tho its been a while since i reread it.

I like it but don't love it

At first I was really into this manga. I really liked the way mangaka described growing up and the romance was really sweet. Kou's faces were unbearable cute, the art in this manga is a true masterpiece. And the fact that both parties were good-looking, just as the rivals, made it really easy to read. Maybe it's because of the things I was reading lately but I really had enough of the "ugly duck and beautiful prince" plot.
But then the drama came...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Really, the subplot with Narumi was really badly made. I don't think Kou made a mistake trying to be there for her, it was just like his character, but the fact he turned down Futaba without explaining anything is just werid. Really, he never had any feelings for Narumi, why make Futaba think he doesn't love her? I understand why he couldn't be with her before Narumi settles in but turing cold shoulder like that is so confusing. And then it just went worse and worse. All his actions were as he was really a jerk trying to keep a girl around him even though he had no intentions on being with her. I don't think that it's possible to change boyfriends so easily like Futaba did too. Maybe it's the way mangaka showed their relationship but I feel like she was happier with Kikuchi. After how Kou acted, I don't know how could she so easily trust him again and just ignore the months she was with another. And then the accident happened. Come on, that was just too much.
If it ended there, I wouls probably give 6. But I really like the plot twist with the dream. I almost cried my heart out and noticed how much I liked the characters.
I also like how the triangle Yuichi-Murano-Aya ended. It was a good description of love towards a teacher and I really like the crybaby Aya and his honesty. Murano was a bit stiff for me, I didn't like her much. Yuuri was ok. But the best was Kikuchi. I like both him and Kou, so it was hard time to choose between them. Mangaka had me there for awhile, making him such a great guy, I really though maybe Futaba will break the shoujo manga rule of staying faithfull to the first guy. Well, mangaka made him look like Taemin, so I am not surprised at all I was cheering for him. Couldn't she have both? ;p

Anyway, together with the awaken chapters, the manga is very much complete. I really like this feeling and the fact they showed quite some things after the couple got together, not ending with them getting together.

The best thing about this series was the art. It's nice and well-proportioned. However, I found the story itself immensely boring. I think the hype around Ao Haru Ride gave me unrealistic expectations and when I actually sat down to read it, I found everything so underwhelming and cliche. Neither main leads are particularly memorable and the tone of the storytelling felt...lukewarm. It just couldn't hold my attention no matter how many chances I gave it. There are other romance series I'd recommend over this one any day. For better characters, see Ouran High School Host Club. For better drama/angst, see Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu. For better plot, see DNAngel. A romance story can be done well, there just has to be an X-factor to it, which in my opinion Ao Haru Ride does not have.

Mixed Feelings

Overall I did enjoy this manga, it kind of reminded me of Bokura Ga Ita but in a less in-depth and depressive way, however I think there were some pointless moments in the manga that the author felt the need to include so it wouldn't get somewhat boring? I do, however, think the ending was very much rushed and could have been a few more chapters toward the end building up to the conclusion so that's why I'm knocking off a few points for this one

It was a sweet little romance with some nice ups and downs.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I'm glad Futaba and Kou end up together in the end. I found them both to be really likeable. Though it would have been nice to see it happen a bit earlier than it did. Her reasoning for realizing her feelings were nice, but I noticed that all that happened on the School Trip seem to not really affect why she decided she was still in love with him that much. When reading I was kind expecting it to happen then, not a few chapters later. Though it was a nice ending for them.

I love that Shuuko and Kominato ended up together. I understand why she liked Kou's brother, but found that her and Kominato were better matched even before finding out they got together. She luckily figures out that he's such a great guy and falls for him. The guy deserves it and I found her to be a really likeable character as well. The other girls changed her for the better.

It was nice to see Yuuri get a man herself. She was adorable.

I'd say the only flaw was Futaba made me frustrated because of how fickle she was, but hey that's the drama for them to realize they love each other so it's okay.

Oh and towards the end, the author trolls you for a few pages by making it seem like Kou died from being hit by the car. Don't fall for it. XD

Now if only they would complete the rest of the story in anime form. The first season was good, but I won't hold my breath. So many animes never show the full story which kinda sucks.

Why do you feel the need to change yourself so others will like you? If they don't like how you really are then they'll never be true friends. You don't need friends like that, I really don't get the message this shoujo is trying to give us. Is it to be popular, change yourself? Well ig thanks for the shitty message,s shoujo. As always.
I will comemorate the art though, the author must've tried hard and I can see that it paid well
