A Joke.

Sorry. Not sorry. I don't feel like accepting it willingly so I won't. For me, it completely fails as a great shoujo manga.

Hirunaka no Ryuusei started out as something refreshing. A series that echoed similarities to Ao Haru Ride but also had its own charm and standing that differed from it. The problem was that it fell to the pits and never made it back up again. Understand that it has nothing to do with who was endgame (okay, no, it does, but only because the whole point of this comment is about about Mika-sensei's lack of writing skills which lead to the ending, which is the endgame). Character development is almost nonexistent (unless you kind of count Shishio). Heck, the main character, where character growth is THE most important, does not grow. No character reached the height of their possible growth and that's just how it ends.

I initially stopped my reading when it became angsty. Turns out, it never stopped being angsty. And not the well written kind either. I will not finish this. I refuse to until I can bring myself to comprehend what just happened in the end (which will be never as I can't come to terms with it). I and a bunch of other fans had high hopes. Too bad the execution was painfully poor all the way through because the premise was extremely promising. Such wasted potential. Even till the end, nothing but dust. It could have been amazing but it fell to be less than mediocre. Mika-sensei, if you planned it like that in the first place, you should have made it more believable. Rushed. Unbelievable. Unacceptable.

I'll quote miwacarroll from tumblr. (If you haven't read her post about the last chapter, you should.)

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
"The Man Who Got Two Beers." -miwacarroll@tumblr
------------------------------
That is the ending of Shishio. That's it. Shishio deserved better. The one who was able to grow and realize himself is the one to get the shorter end of the stick. In fact, he didn't even get the stick. He was deprived of his rightful, deserved ending. And the thing about Mamura been the true daytime shooting star is complete crap. What nonsense. Mika-sensei, since you were so persistent on a love triangle, then make it believable. Don't throw a couple together because you want it that way. I didn't feel that they were in love. But it won't matter because Shizume till the end. In my mind, it did happen. Idon'tcarelalalala. Chunchun.

Make your plot twist, that's fine. However, don't go stringing your readers and your characters like beads around one direction (and it feels so natural too in that direction) and then right exactly before you top off the story, you go smacking everyone in the other direction and you force us to accept it or leave it. Well I, for one, am leaving it. The endgame was planned already so, you should have made it natural. How careless of you to make
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
"The Man Who Got Two Beers" Shishio
to get all the crap simply because you were biased over another character. If so, you shouldn't have made him such a big part of HnR because you tossed him away like a used napkin. Honestly, you as a creator of them and their world, you should have been more mindful of how you developed the story, their story. Utterly disappointing.

For those who could bring themselves to last through the muck that was Vampire Knight, just to get to the end, you'll find yourself feeling a similar feeling that spawned as you read VK as you read the end of HnR. This feeling is the offspring of the feelings you felt reading VK. Be warned. Satisfaction not guaranteed.

@shoutoshiro. I'm guessing you liked my comment so much that you decided to rehash it in yours. I'll take that as an implied compliment. /wink

edit; I'll pose a question. For those of you who enjoyed it, good for you. to each his own.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
But, did you really like it or did you just like the fact that it ended with the second male lead, the so-called "underdog"?

edit;; Have you read the extra about Shishio? This is where the ultimate flaw in her writing is uncovered even more, where her fail at developing her characters is so blatantly obvious. How laughable.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Six years pass and Shishio is still broken over it. Wow Mika-sensei, you don't even give him any backbone of healing or moving on. He's stuck in a pit and he's never gotten out of it. Six years. I wonder how much you care about his story as he seems to keep on getting all the terrible things in life. He's fallen and you push him down. Every time he tries to get back up, you push him again. And that girl...that girl, is that a potential love interest? Hahaha. It's so funny, she seems like another Suzume, those dead-ish eyes that show a Suzume-like indifference, her thoughts that echo Suzume-like interest, her expressions, just like a second Suzume. Since he couldn't win the O.G. You throw him a pity party and give him the second best. A person similar to Suzume. Even better!

I was initially a sensei x chunchun shipper but around the half-way point I started shipping Yosano with Mamura instead.

I love Sensei as a character. He's suave, mischievous, young-at-heart teacher with hint of mysterious adult charm that beguiles our MC as well as us readers. What's there not to love about him? He is like an adorable cat. However, given his recurring actions and words to our MC throughout the middle half of the series and then on, I really began abhorring the idea that he may end with Yosano as a lover. The man flip-flops way too much. Yeah, I know he was in a difficult position given that he's her teacher and must be a responsible adult of society etc but couldn't have that have been handled in a better way? Instead of leading the MC on to pointless conjectures of the whole 'he loves me, he loves me not' scenario several times he should have either told her to wait til she graduates (if he decides to pursue the relationship) or make a clean cut of it forever. But here we have this grown man of 24-26 competing with a 16-18 year old kid for the girl they both fancy in the most arbitrary ways. Like what? (*cough* culture festival race *cough*)

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
We know he's suppose to be charmingly immature but it really started pushing it near the end, especially when he started making moves on her despite the fact that she was currently in a relationship with Mamura and had decided for the SECOND time to move on after heartbreak from rejection with him (also not to mention confusing and hurting our MC several times with his ambiguous responses). That is NOT okay. Especially given that she's beginning to find happiness in her newfound love with this bestie once more. However, I do wish there was more buildup between Mamura and Yosano as much as she had with Sensei.. the plot felt rushed to quickly reach a conclusion. Despite that, at that point I wouldn't have minded if she had ended up even with Inukai or any other guy instead though. If she were my girlfriend my advice to her would be to stay far, far away from this teacher of hers. She is 16 years old and this is a guy who is 8 years her senior doesn't seem to be capable in making a sound and concise decision. irl, her relationship with Sensei would have been passionate but short-lived. If not short-lived, a very thorny and painful path. The idea of her ending up with Sensei was more romantic but choosing Mamura was the most realistically pragmatic decision she could make. He loves her selflessly, her Sensei does not. Mamura thinks of all the ways she can be loved, fulfilled and happy (even at his own expense) but her Sensei does not. Her teacher's later actions were so indecisive and destructive to our heroine's growth and love that it makes one wonder whether he's undeveloped in maturity or underdeveloped as a character. Seriously, it makes it seem that this highschooler boy is more courageous in loving our lead than this man. It doesn't make the love both the teacher and Yosano had any less significant but it's ultimately one-dimensional compared to what she has with Mamura. Quoting her, through Mamura she learns that to love is to give love and happiness to the other and not just focused on one's own emotional fulfillment through the rip-tides of passion. She learns by what he has shown her that throughout the times he's been with her. Now that is the kind of relationship that lasts a lifetime.

My two cents.

The ending, the ""Mamura has always been my daytime shooting star"", and the whole love triangle thing is a complete crap.

I honestly loved it at first. It was a very enjoyable read at first. It changed when the author just threw in the Mazume ending when she obviously hinted Shizume ending in the previous chapters. What? The ""Mamura has always been my daytime shooting star"" thing? Bullshit. Yamamori, if you wanted to make Mazume the endgame, at least don't throw in the (actually) pointless hints of Shizume. I sound like I'm not happy because Mazume is the endgame, but trust me, it's beyond that. I'm ??? 'ed by Yamamori's terrible story writing.

To be honest, I really dislike Mamura... I mean, he hated all girls just because a freaking divorce? Really? And Suzume is like, the only exception? Nonsense. That made me cringe. This, in ANY way, DOESN'T excuse his terrible behavior around girls aka misogyny. Ew. He didn't have any character development, just like any other character in the series (except Sensei, of course). The only character who went through character development is like, only Sensei. For heaven's sake, Sensei deserved better. In the end, he wasn't a protagonist, and after going through the hell, he only got two beers. That's it. Sensei's ending. Woah, thanks, Yamamori. You couldn't have done better! (claps) I thought Sensei's role was important to the story. He was Suzume's first love story, the first person Suzume met in Tokyo, and he was the one with the title ""daytime shooting star""? Eh, but, I must be wrong. In the end, Sensei was nothing but a man who got two beers when he obviously was miserable for, like, 25+ chapters? Or is it 30+? Right.

So, yeah. That's it. Mamura was the daytime shooting star all along. Shishio? Who's Shishio? Tsk.

This series had a great potential, but sadly, it went downhill. It went into a complete nonsensical, crappy manga. You will waste your time if you read this, except you read this manga only for its art. Sorry, but I'm not sorry.

The author was so upset about how people only read this online for free and how it was unfair, and then she goes and pulls this on us. Well, no freaking wonder why we only read this because it's free. I buy a decent amount of manga (used to be a lot, but ran out of space), I'm glad I didn't buy this. It doesn't deserve it.

The art was good in this manga. The writing and plot and romance was mediocre, and the characters were also mediocre. Except for Shishio-sensei, really. He was off-beat and charming. I don't care for kuudere types like Mamura; he can be cute, but tbh he's really boring, and he had minimal character development.

The ending was rushed and out of nowhere and unsatisfactory, and not believable at all. Utter bullcrap and a waste of time.

There was no need to bait a Shizume ending.
It felt like she changed it last minute to go according to whom most fans were rooting for instead (wait, most people like

Mamura and Suzume have poor chemistry.
Not that Suzume and Shishio had the best chemistry either, but theirs at least worked somewhat.

Like the pairing

I like the choice she made.

One kept making her cry due to his own indecisiveness.
One decided to make a move even though he know he doesn't stand much of a chance and is true to his feelings. Not to mention all he wanted was the girl that he love to be happy.

Isn't it obvious which love interest is the better choice? It's better to be with someone who loves you, more than someone that you love.

It makes me like the pairing even more because he is not the first love. I hate how most shoujo always make the lead end up with the first love even though the second guy is OBVIOUSLY better. (Yes I'm looking at you, Strobe Edge)

It's more realistic, but maybe for this manga it was TOO fast. Nonetheless, I like how she chose the better guy. (One reason why I always like Josei better)

The art is beautiful, exactly the type of art I adore for shoujo mangas. The story isn't really new and it's not exactly used either, but it's refreshing. The characters are interesting, although I don't care much for the sensei, he's cute alright but well... he's like every other quirky male lead in shoujo. Or I just really like the other guy more. I want to read more of this and more of the mangaka's works. She's (her stories lol) are exactly my type! Read it!

The girl is quite tolerable, if not actually enjoyable to read about. There's not a ton of annoying blushing, and she's not hopelessly shy or a crybaby. She's also got a sense of humor and a wit that anyone would admire. I'm not sure how I'm going to like the love triangle that seems to be approaching, but the characters thus far are likable and interesting.

The characters seem interesting and the artwork is pretty nice too, it comes to my fav (:
I'd love to see what will happen next. Please update more.<3
Give it a try, guys. It's amazing.

---- new update! ------

I THINK THERE'S REALLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME..

Like.. Why am I always falling for the second guy who will never end up with the female lead in shoujo manga? (Or.. maybe there are actually some rare cases..)
Sighs. Mamura is such a sweetheart. Aw.. I really don't want him to get hurt in the end. Honestly, our two main male characters are both nice guys. They have their own good and bad points. Sensei is okay but I'm still rooting for Mamura-kun. Yes. I'm weak towards those cold guys but I even gets WEAKER towards those types of guy who usually blush. Tsundere types are also cute, and Mamura is one of them. lol <333333333333

................... BUT.
I still have this horrible feeling that he's not gonna end up with Suzume. I've read a few comments here and it seems like you guys are also more into Mamura-kun, right? Therefore, Yamamori-sensei, please make a change in shoujo world and fullfil our wish!
(... or else I drop this series if I find out my dear Mamura is hurt. He's a nice guy and he doesn't deserve it.) lol.

-----------
As the story goes on........
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I have a VERY strong feeling that the main girl is going to end up with the teacher NOT Mamura-kun. What the...............
I used to be really really in love with this manga but now NOT ANYMORE. Seriously, please Yamamori-sensei, DO NOT MAKE MAMURA BECOME A MISERABLE GUY IN THE END. HE DOESN'T DESERVE IT! Love triangles are cool but I really hate it when the second guy's role is just to lend a shoulder to cry on, a person for the girl lead to TAKE ADVANTAGE OF when she is lonely or have some problems with her love! That is just really CRUEL!...............
I will keep reading this manga but... if Mamura gets rejected at the end, I will IMMEDIATELY change the rating from 9 to 4~5! I feel sorry for those guys who play the second role in shoujo manga. They don't deserve that.... Is there any manga series that there is a TWIST and the second guy takes over the main guy and become the lead!?..........

I haven't read a shoujo manga that held my attention for more than a week
Well, except for Horimiya, which is also one of my favorites this year.
Seriously, I've been thinking about these two works for more than a few months now. I know they release once a month, but, I find myself checking for updates almost each week.....that's how hooked I am.

One thing I like to mention are the characters. The heroine in particular. Out of all the shojo heroines I have read, she's one of those that really seems to stand out without trying, considering how simple she is compared to the typical generic heroine. She's not shy, or pitiful, or annoyingly aggressive. She has a level of confidence, without being conceited, yet has her moments of self-consciousness and awkwardness. She's smart, yet her grades could probably say....otherwise. She's also funny.....as in, smart, slightly snarky humor.

And one of the things I really.....REALLY.....like about her, is how she deals with negative people, or negative and anxious situations. Rather than let something....whether it be a person, or a feeling.....put her down, she makes a point to actually try and DO something about it. If someone is belittling her, she makes a point to speak her mind, or even use physical force. Some of you might be imagining chairs flying, but I can assure you, it's not that type of kung fu situation....the thing she did was very simple and the situation was kind of rooting for her to do it. Personally, I applauded her for doing what she did. The things this girl does is both slightly surprising, and quite refreshing. And when it comes to her feelings.... she actually tries. She doesn't beat around the bush about it, doesn't have that "I w-wonder if S-senseii will notice me" (no pun intended) kind of attitude going on. No. She doesn't wait for fate to push her. She pushes herself.

I could say more about the other characters, and the setting, and the storyline, and the simple yet beautiful art, but really, no amount of commentary can help make up for reading the story. If you want interesting, and actually likeable characters, and a storyline that was probably told time and again but this time with a more interesting style, I highly recommend it. Granted, my score could change any time.....I'm kind of nervous by how many chapters are in this series. It makes you wonder if the romance is going anywhere at all. But right now, I really am enjoying it. The guys....I honestly don't know who to root for. This is the first time that I actually like both rivals.

If they license this series in the US, I'm definitely going to be first in line to buy it.

I'd read this manga sometime ago but this is one of those mangas that I couldn't really get over with because I seriously like it so much that I read it again from the beginning few times and watched its live action twice tee-hee.
And I decided that I want to share my comment just because... well, hopefully the author-san would read this and get happy 🙂
(Also because I realized that it's hard to share my excitement about a good manga with someone because as a 29 year old mom and OL, I hardly find anyone around me who likes shoujo manga as well)

Anyway, this manga left a deep impression to me not only because I liked male sensei-female student story plot, but also because I actually rooted for Mamura instead and I thought she would ended with sensei eventually but SHE DID NOT! Hahahah hooray! 😛
Usually, no matter how genuinely the second male lead loves the female lead, or what a big jerk was the first male lead towards female lead... Still she would ended up with the first male lead.
(I was still wounded from reading heroine shikkaku btw)
(And disclaimer: Not saying that shishio is a huge jerk but I do dislike how he confused Yosano with his second confession)

I think, even if she ended up with Shishio, I would probably not so broken hearted because I really have that sensei fetish lol but Mamura seriously captured my heart <3
I love him so much I want him to be happy <3

If Yosano ended up with Sensei, I would beg Yamamori-sensei to make a seriously good story about Mamura having his happiness. Thank goodness Yosano realized what's true love (Mamura!) because in the end, love is sacrificing our own happiness for our beloved one's.
Just like the saying "If you love something, let it go. If it returns, it's yours; if it doesn't, it wasn't. If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they're yours; if they don't they never were."

Thank you Yamamori-sensei!
I enjoyed this manga a lot! <3
