Rape done more realistically...

...and it's rubbing off on people here at mangaupdates really hard, just looking at all those 1s ratings. Also the vague plot synopsis doesn't do a good job at reducing the shock value either which added more to the 1s ratings. Doesn't help that it happens early on before people get too attached to the story.

But back to the point; you think it's not possible to have to a person with a goofy personality with friends, family, and normal desires to unmask the ability to be extremely discriminate and violate an innocent woman while acting like nothing happens after? To break news to you all, but this happens all too often in the real world, sadly.

Now add in monsters and supernatural mind-controlling powers and you got something pretty accurately displayed in this manga. It was hard to read, but the aftermath and the victim looks to be pivotal in feature plot points. It also lets us, the readers, paint a clear villain in the story and add in ethical layers of grey in the people associated with that character. Cersei Lannister is a good example of this done right. deathsenvoy's comment goes into more detail about the story building impact of the rape which I find well-thought-out.

Besides that, the story is mostly mediocre with a minor plot holes here and there. The male lead is a flimsy cardboard cutout that you can swap out with any other male lead of MIYAZAKI Maya's manga and it wouldn't change much. But it's still decent enough to have a 5-7 rating as of chapter 16. Also still has the potential to get better if the story builds up well.

Beyond Rape...
by Lost Rabbit

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
A lot of readers are saying that the dog should be killed for raping the protagonist's childhood friend. Just to get things straight, I hate the topic of rape, but I figure that IF it propels the story forward, then so be it. After all, for a series like Berserk, it had an infamously disturbing rape scene, and yet it deepened the protagonist's ambition to seek revenge against the man he once considered his good friend. In terms of story (and just about everything else) though, Berserk's on a completely different planet when compared to Holy Knight. These are the (main) issues I found with the series:

>Holy Knight has no direction as for wherever the hell it's story's heading.
>There is no higher authority in this story (Teachers, Principal/Headmaster/mistress, Security, Police, etc.). Neither the protagonist nor his childhood friend (the rape victim) ever consider the thought of reporting the rapist that's hanging around their school. Even if he is a vampire's familiar, they don't know that.
>Author keeps trying to portray the rapist dog familiar as sympathetic and caring for whenever his master (Lilith) is feeling like shit. This never works, because we all know as readers that the character's both a rapist and an incredible douche-bag to the protagonist...
>Cat-girl character that's supposed to explain the fantasy world to the protagonist has major ADHD. Whenever she has the chance to talk and explain something, she immediately gets distracted. [This is partly why the story can't go anywhere.]
>>Biggest issue's the protagonist: He is literally a useless idiot that can't get his shit together.
>He sees the rapist talking to Lilith (the heroine + girl he likes) and asks what her relationship is to the rapist. She simply tells him to "just forget about it," and main character does exactly that. Never asks nor thinks about it again immediately.
>He doesn't continue to support/look after his childhood friend after he punched the rapist just once. He goes off to keep trying to screw Lilith, and some chapters later, his childhood friend ends up getting raped/nearly raped a second time by same rapist. He doesn't even know that that happened yet.
>He saves Lilith from a vampire slayer, gets a terrible wound from the sword he blocked with just his hand, and he's eventually choked and threatened by the rapist. While he's in the hospital and he questions the course of events I just described, I figure that he has the chance to realize that he needs to become stronger. Well... Nope! His second immediate thought's about how Lilith's cute, yet cold to him... And that's it... yup...

Only reason I didn't stop reading was that there wasn't such big issues like this around the beginning chapters and all. With the recent several chapters though (12-16 I think...?), the series reveals just how terrible it is overall.
Remember how I was talking about Berserk before? If you haven't yet, go read that series. Then again, go read something, or just anything. Chances are it's better than Holy Knight.

misleading genre

most people probably start reading this expecting one of those happy go lucky/harem manga's but it isn't. it stil has way too few chapters (14) to actually see where this is going. it lacks a few factors so it doesn't really fit the genre but rather than folow the descriptions you should rather think about this as a serie of the genres: drama, psychological, horror, supernatural and mature. those who usually read harem/ecchi will probably have the same reaction as half of the people who commented here while this kind of thing happens in many manga with a dark theme without anyone really complaining about it.

then again the main character really should grow a pair for my opinion but that's the author's choice and there are too few chapters to say anything about character growth. that said he had the chance of revenge in the palm of his hands since the rapist's owner is desperate. but letting this kind of chances slip and a terribly weak MC is typical for your common ecchi/harem manga

quit a risky combination of two styles wich mostly have a different audience, ironicaly by being original pissing of the readers one way or another. I'm still somewhat curious how he is going or whether he is going to evolve in the future. but as of now it's not my cup of tea, i had rather hoped it had been something of the style from aphorism or gantz

Don't Misunderstand

I can handle rape in manga, yes it happens in real life and can often draw chilling and dramatic revelations from the characters in the wake of such a tragic event. What I cannot freaking stand is the character that committed the rape being used almost like comic relief directly after and still being portrayed as a sympathetic character.

Are you supposed to read the "touching" scene where Lilith's familiar is comforting her and get warm feels while conveniently forgetting the fact that he just raped someone? I'm not saying the character should get immediate retribution and die in a house fire, but having the manga constantly show him like he's a good guy when he did something reprehensible just pisses me off.

The only things that bugs me is the MC

I don´t mind the rape ( I didn´t like it) but the ONLY thing in this manga that is annoying or repulsive is how weak the MC is and how he gets bossed around and does nearly nothing or even nothing...

Miyazaki Maya (spoilers)

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
These are my thoughts on the available translated content so far, which basically consists of the first volume.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the author is Maya Miyazaki.

Many find the rape scene between Lilith's dog familiar and Shin's childhood friend repulsive, and logically it is repulsive to us readers. However, rape, NTR, and cheating are common themes in Maya's work, there's always some form of it in all of his stories.

I tolerate it because his artistic talent is something I enjoy greatly.

Although I did not like the rape scene as a human being, I enjoyed it as someone who wants to see a compelling story. Such a scene conveyed the sense of apathy among the immortals. Lilith did not care that her familiar raped a human and it didn't seem like the familiar was even taught that such matters are detestable. This signifies that humans mean nothing to them.

Not only does it tell you a little something about the immortals, but it strengthens our emotional bonds to the main character and his childhood friend. Most people after seeing and reading that scene will want two things. Just revenge for the innocence lost, and for Shin to enact that revenge. Not only this, but since I'm a spiteful person, I want to see what the familiar did to Shin's childhood friend bite Lilith in the ass. Simple example: Shin refuses to copulate with Lilith because of how disgusted he is in their behavior.

Personally I think the artwork is great, and the story is something I enjoy. There are quite a few stories about immortals and their familiars but something about this one just compels me to keep reading. It's something known yet unique. Not a copy or carbon print to my knowledge and I can't wait for more releases.

Well I had already read the comments and had what happens to the childhood friend spoiled, and I hate what happens to her - especially when the character that is *what happens to her* loves someone or/and is a virgin (idk?) but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... Being mind controlled or whatever |: but yeah I stopped watching after said chapter .-.

All this stuff about disturbing what the hell is up with that. People get raped, don't start acting like this is so unfathomable. This isn't some ideal shounen it is seinen and seinen paints a very realistic and often cruel and dark picture. Funny though I don't see many people complain about Berserker and the same thing happens.

Its going good, since its the first volume, don't expect more except, the rape, on another note:- people need to calm the F*$k down and realize this is not your hand loving, want to become friends with humanity vampires these are you're going to do whatever the hell they feel ones, they DO NOT want to exist along side humans, the humans are their prey full stop and if that scene disgusted and disturb, fine but to drop or give the manga a low score, now that's just childish, especially since its NOW beginning and we have gotten NO WHERE, either way, I hope to see good things from this manga and that scene shows just how dark s*it is going to get, waiting for volume 2.
