This is a collection of 12 short manga created by Katsuhiro Otomo between 1978 and 1979, when he was 24-25 years old, in the order of publication. The following year, 1980, was the eve of the mangaka's talent becoming known to the world when he began to work on "Domu" and "Feeling Already at War" and other short stories, which were rising to a level of perfection as if in gestation, changed in style with each one, forming an astonishing multifaceted body of work.
In particular, the title work, "Fire-Ball," is an important serial that opened the eyes of the mangaka, who until then had spun realistic human dramas, to a new genre, SF. It was a milestone for Otomo, as it depicted "supernatural powers" that directly led to his later works "Domu" and "Akira," and its depiction of the spectacular completely changed the style of his previous works.
This collection includes two stories from "Short Peace" (1979, Kisotengaisha), four stories from "Highway Star" (1979, Futabasha), three stories from "GOOD WEATHER" (1981, Kitan-sha), and two stories including the title story from "Her Memories..." (1990, Kodansha). (1990/Kodansha). In addition, "Distant Festival," a previously uncollected short story, is included for the first time in this long-awaited tankoban. In addition, all color pages that were previously in grayscaled are now restored. The commentary by Otomo himself is also worth reading. Less...

Memories, a 1995 film, adapts and heavily alters one of these stories. Seeing it first will not spoil your enjoyment of the original - in fact, I think the manga version is a lot tighter.
Every one of these stories is a banger. Otomo's sci-fi architecture is unstoppable and his characters consistently look really cool. Often the tone is serious and tense, with likable young men going up against advanced technologies and mysterious substances causing instant death. The results are often unpredictable. Those who have seen or read Akira, the author's best known work, will recognize the recurring themes of state-vivisected espers, oppressive highrises and the hairy 70s bums who defy them.
The gag stories are mildly vulgar and clever. Particularly memorable is his skewed portrayal of Noah's Ark. Hair is a charming parody of Otomo's own prole-vs-state stories, with some excellent slapstick.
"Sound of Sand" begins with a fantastic image and a scary situation, implies a gripping setting and immediately endears us to plucky characters, then ends right when it's getting started. Beautiful, bizarre, and exciting. Otomo didn't even remember writing it! That's the mark of a truly powerful artist.
This is a quick read, including the author's notes, which amusingly have nothing but criticism for his old work. Lesser mangaka can go their whole careers without compiling an anthology of this quality. Highly recommended.

Although I've only read the piece MEMORIES in English, I've read the rest in Spanish, and I got the jist of the stories through Otomo's very cinematic art. Mandarin Paperbacks printed a now rare English copy of this book.
