Ok, you don't have to read Act I to know the story for Act II, it can stand alone on its own pretty well. But read Act I too! Cos there are many parts of the plots which intersects.
The art for Act II is much much more polished though. ;) I love this series! And am in fact still collecting them!
I don't know about Slam Dunk, but Dear Boys is one of the first series which has gotten me hooked onto manga!!

as you poeple know this is part 2 of the manga dear boys! the character are the same but little improved plus the art is cool! i know i rated dear boys 10 but this is manga is 20! serious

if u people didn't read this manga! i urge u people to read it! this is one of the best basket ball manga out there after slam dunk! (maybe thats why i am rating this manga too high) the story starts with good potential and up to volume 3 i read up until to now, there is not even one flaw!! inthis manga, it too is perfect! plus i love basketball! :
