EPIC Manga!!(The king of all when I look from every angle)
This manga is just superb!! It's so humorous and later it became so exciting as the story keeps on going further!! The character development especially of the protagonist is brilliant! To be frank, I don't have any word to praise this manga!! I don't like basketball much but this manga made me take interest in so much that I secretly even wished to take part in a basketball competition!! You know, such manga can even change your life!!
I have read more than 20 manga long manga(of course I have read more but they are not 'long ones'! Everyone has its own feature and different plot, but when I compare 'SLAM DUNK' to any other other manga, then inspite of based on a different storyline I'll declare 'SLAM DUNK' best of all!! This manga has so much to say!! I cried and got sentimental on various places while reading it and even laughed out as hard as I can on some other hilarious places! The action is so thrilling that you will feel absorbed into the story!!
This manga has all what one desires! If you really are someone who likes quality manga, then it's impossible for you to not to read it!! Even if you don't like long manga, then too you can try this one as an exception for sure! I promise you that you will never feel like not going any further, instead you will desire to read more and more!! I don't want to criticize anyone here, but those who gave or will give this manga a rating less than 9 don't know this for sure that what is a 'good and quality' manga! They are not true lovers of manga, I can guarantee this!! Even if everyone's view point is different, there is no way that anyone who truly understands manga can ever give 'Slam Dunk' a rating of less than 9...!! (And in my view there is no way you can give it a rating of less than 9.5)
At last, I'll say it's a "masterpiece" and a work of genius!! It's a perfect mixture of "humor," "action," "emotion," "sports."
People do "thumbs-up" for the things they really like but I'm doing "body-up" for 'Slam Dunk.'
My most favorite sports team whether you ask about real one or about virtual one, I'll shout only one name "SHOHOKU HIGH........!!" It's my favorite team not only in this world but in this entire universe! Because no other team, no matter whatever the sport is can have such genius, unique, talented and hard-working players.......!! It's an amazingggggg........ team!!!!!
I'm a die hard fan of this manga and everyone should think about it the way I think!! I really....... want it's sequel but it's not in my or in any other's hand because it only depends on manga-ka whether he wants to continue or not! Ah.......! I really wanted a happy ending with Shohoko High winning the National Championship!! And that's why I really wanted a sequel! A sequel in which the former captain of Shohoku High will come and see his team winning the Championship in front of his eyes!! Ah............! It would be so much wonderful to see it................!!
I don't think that even 10 out of 10 is sufficient, if it was for me I'll give it 100 out of 10 but I'm helpless because there's no more option!!
" THE EPIC MANGA EVER DRAWN AND AN EPIC STORY-LINE!! "

I couldn't believe how this manga could move me so much!! At first I thought that since it's just a sports manga, I could just skim through it but little did I know that I would get sucked into its story.
I must say Inoue Takehiko is a very good story teller and I give him props just because some parts made me laugh out loud. I can also tell you that the more I read, the more excited I became, its like I was watching their games from a spectators point of view and yet know what the players are thinking.
Also, the more chapters I read, I can tell that the mangaka's drawing is also improving. Plus, I even got to know a little bit knowledge about basketball too!!

The only disappointing fact is the ending which felt a bit cut short, but still emotionally connecting and done in the most realistic way possible
Slam Dunk was voted as the best manga of all time (GOAT) in Japan by over 70,000 people beating other classic mangas like DBZ, Sailor moon, Yu Yu hakashu etc Shohuku vs Sannoh still remains the best match ever portrayed in any manga/anime series EVER, That was high class high intensity stuff which is unmatched even till today
This manga is one of the most beloved manga in its own genre.. in fact, all its readers are clamoring for its next installation. even the ending itself, though the story was complete, left more questions and imaginations to the readers. One of those questions were - "what happen to the team shohuko during the winter tournament?" "what were the other improvements of Sakuragi?".. these questions are itself proof of how great the impact of the story it left on its readers. the quality of the story never diminish, not even once in its entirety. even those who aren't BB fanatics are being drawn by this manga. the acts of the troublesome troupe, the blissful acts and imaginations of Sakuragi makes the readers love the story more and more. if you want more of this review from me, here's the link: http://www.mangaupdates.com/reviews.html?id=305

First time I've ever wanted to read something so long twice....
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Although the ending was disappointing, it was still the most realistic ending...so I'm both happy and sad at the same time hahah
If I could, I'd give this manga a 100/10 definitely recommended. The art was kinda ehh and the beginning, but it definitely gets better (muuuuch better! )
i made an account on this website, jus to give this comment, deserving of a great manga like this. so this is my 1st post, btw this is also the first time im giving a manga 10 out of 10.
Everything about this was jus incredible; it was one smooth hilarious touching ride, one after the other. it starts off alittle slow, but PLEASE I BEG YOU, for you yourself too, to persevere even if the first few chapters are not to your taste.
Art: each character looks unique; can recognize each of them quickly(unlike some mangas where characters jus get a hair-style change and they call it another character -_-|| ). gets better and better; quite realistic drawings compared with other mangas. the people look pretty real, and the guys look damn cool when they're supposed to be. the girls are pretty cute too.
Story - Read to find out; don't wana give spoilers. Nothing feels extra in this; everything fits together. Be prepared to laugh lots and feel inspired with the characters' perseverance.
Character: if someone asks me whose my favorite character, i find it hard pressed to name one. Their interactions are funny to see, and even the loss of a single character in the Shohoku team will surely be sorely missed. The whole Shohoku team combined is my favorite character.
I know a manga is epic great when: 1). after 31 (!!!) volumes, i still want MORE. as in, ALOT MORE. and im someone impatient who can't even finish an entire korean drama without skipping or something. 2). as a sports manga, it makes you want to play the sport after reading it. 3). the manga has fans like me bothering to do something like this and writing such a long review. and from the other comments, i can see im not the only fan to do this. 4). able to make its fans buy the entire collection(special collectors' edition) and read it several times over; years after it has been finished and completed. 5). if im not wrong, online petitions on asking Takehiko Inoue to make another sequel is still around.
...........i can go on and on, but im in abit of a rush now unfortunately.
Please, go read the first 10 volumes at least when you have some time on your hands.
It really is. Its not the first manga to get a 10 from me but Slam Dunk really is the best manga I've read. Its just really fun and that is something I feel stories seem to lose as the go on longer. Also the most important in my view: long manga always seem to stagger at some point before becoming good again but Slam Dunk never had this problem. It was ALWAYS good ALL THE TIME throughout its run. And that is something that I can't say for even the very best manga out there. Its fun. Its hilarious. Its emotional. Its THE BEST.
There is a reason why Slam Dunk is so beloved to many younger generations in the Philippines: Sakuragi Hanamichi is a relatable, imperfect protagonist with big dreams for an underdog. I will try my best to be as objective as I can in this review, as I am forever a fan of Slam Dunk and its imperfections in all its entiretyŚwithin the anime and the manga.
The main characters develop emotionally, mentally, and physically, while their individual backgrounds have been fleshed out and incorporated into their hunger for victory. Their emotions are very well portrayed through the sense that I felt their willpower and their effort that endured through numerous trainings and setbacks. I must commend the author for being able to craft such abstract emotions and allowing the readers to feel the growth of the Shohoku team. The interactions within the Shohoku team is reminiscent of real interactions between close friends. Teasing, jokes, and light-hearted insults are frequently exchanged between teammates and enforce the feeling of close friendships and brotherhood. Comical scenes are usually perpetrated through Sakuragi, whose foolishness and straightforward mindset are often the brunt of jokes.
The art is, of course, fairly dated and does take time getting used to in the beginning. I will admit it took me awhile when confronted with Sakuragi's own preposterous hairstyle. The same is said when introduced to Sakuragi for the first time; he acts mindless and I was a bit frustrated with his personality, but after pulling through the road bumps his personality becomes more tolerable, I promise.
I also admit at times, this manga can become bland in terms of plot. There is not much to say about basketball except training, competing, eating, and sleeping. But I was swept up in the emotions of the characters that everything was exciting, particularly fights and basketball matches.
Sakuragi Hanamichi is undoubtedly the underdog and it was entertaining to watch his growth as a character and a basketball player. Shohoku's journey as a team also brought aspirations and changes in myself: never give up and always try your best. Readers also have the opportunity to learn more about basketball as Sakuragi learns the basics, and it was extremely helpful in the sense that I could watch an NBA match on TV and understand what is happening. The ending, however, is not as neatly wrapped up as I would have liked it to be, but I suppose I can live with it. I regard this as a classic for the very reason that it portrays emotions and characters so vividly that it transcends the two-dimensional world. This manga may not be perfect, but it was certainly worth reading and watching. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - art | ★★★☆☆ (3.75, to be exact) characters | ★★★★★ plot | ★★★★☆
