A former shell of it's prime after the athena arc

Hayate no Gotoku in the beginning was a really good comedy series, in the Athena arc was a great comedy drama, and now it's a boring slice of life series. My recomendation is to read till the ending of the Athena arc and just wait for the ending or the cancelation of the series and conclude from there.

This series started out as a good comedy, evolved into a great comedy drama and now (post-Athena arc) has fizzled out into a boring slice of life series with no main plot and boring skits. It feels like the mangaka no longer has any idea what to do with the manga and is just making up fluff to extend the life of it. A true shame.

EDIT: And now it's gone to pure filler. Words cannot describe how disappointed I am with the mangaka.

I like this manga for it gag style. I really like the part where a character suddenly pop out of nowhere, Hayate especially. It happen a lot but it still surprise me. I'm more into more into realistic drawing manga but this one is an exeption.

I don't know why I'm reading this anymore. The manga is aimless with random plot that may or may not be fun to read (mostly boring now though), and I don't care very much with the characters anymore.

After the Athena Arc the story starting to get less interesting but i still like the series it just that I think the story would have gone better if they are still in the mansion and Athena show up in the school and hayate is surprise to see her that is how i would want the future chapter would have been

I liked the serious turn of events.

I can't really comprehend why everyone seems to be more critical over this series.

As one of the commenters put it I was totally in for this kinda harem series that did not take itself seriously. I was first introduced to the quirky, unique humor and our unlucky butler via the anime and since I was told that the anime kept a tangent off the manga, I am relatively unsure of how this series was like in its formative years, However, I downed the athena arc++ rapidly after completing the anime, and felt the serious turn in the series and the massive arcs bore a slight resemblance to the way Amatsu sensei from Negima likes to write about dramatic situations and grandeur scenery.

I enjoyed the near 180 degree turn. I thought it was good. Different series sometimes change their genres big time, like Reborn, which turned from gag to a solid action series. In this case, the romance, especially with Hina and Athena turned out kinda well fleshed-out, which was suprising but not an unpleasant change.
Hope to see greater things from this manga.

Ahahahahaha... this series never failed to make me laugh. the randomness really like a mess and I love it! the slow development really just right to treasure every moment of crazy things that always happened to this debt-ridden butler. It's really lively and it can survive and become a long comedy action harem manga. It's just the right tempo for a long gag manga.

as long as you still can laugh, try this manga. don't worry, even a dumbass can still get this manga content coz it doesn't require you to do much thinking nor theorizing it in some forum.

although, unfortunately it seems the plot have been moving recently but even if it comes to an end it's still a top gag manga.

Fun, light read

This is not for everyone, with its quirky and random humor. Its charm comes from lovable characters and corny jokes that somehow become acceptable, if not pretty hilarious, within the atmosphere. As long as you don't take it too seriously, it's an enjoyable read. Fans of School Rumble will probably like it as well though I think School Rumble was funnier.

I really love how the simple things that seem random at first really tie together in the later chapters. I think the author really planned his story really well. Brings me chills when I realize how important things that happened before were and how they're all connected. One of my favorite mangas of all time. Especially the Athena arc, lots of emotions running there.

The Plot

I couldn't find another comment mentioning this. The actual plot is a winding thread. It's a gag comic so there are many humorous short stories but within those stories are bits and pieces of the overall plot. As the story goes on, they become more frequent and you start to see these pieces and strands tie together. These are really starting to show in the most recent chapters. If you care about plot, you shouldn't read unless your willing to pick out and remember those strands as you read. If you give up before you make it to the 200's or so you probably won't see the point of it all.
