well. this manga just kind of pissed me off. It's like someone was making a "shoujo cliche stew" or something...
"Hmm, let's see, let combine a really stupid girl who can't live without a boy... with a "hot" guy who's pretty much god-like, then we'll throw in a gay guy just to attempt to be slightly unique instead of the bitchy fan club... oh wait, let's just have both... " etc etc.
If you just like Gender bender, I recommend Ouran, not this. Even Hana Kimi was better.

1) I read this before Hana Kimi, but I still must admit BoNaWa is unoriginal. Shoujo cliches are present. However, some people like shoujo precisely for this aspect (like how cheap romnovs always have a happy ending). Remember that 75% of manga is entertainment, not art; this question for this series is, does it manage to entertain?
2) The artwork is very good. I can't really fault it at all, and it stays at the same quality throughout. It's clean, (relatively) realistic and pretty rather than spectacularly beautiful. It's totally modern, I can't see any Saitou Chiho-style oldschool influence. Facefaults are used reasonably sparely however.
3) I disagree that the series is fillerish. It's only 5 volumes and I found it reasonably tight. Nothing comes to mind that I would really cut out. Plus there are extra stories.
4) The characters are unoriginal. The guys are hot, but that's all there is to them. The girl isn't unpleasant, ugly or dumb, but just not interesting.
5) The storyline is, I've already said, unoriginal. It's unrealistic, but manages to look realistic anyway (probably helped by the aforementioned art). Its attempts at humour have mixed results; I smiled mostly.
6) So in conclusion, this series is mildly entertaining. There are far better examples in this same genre, even if all you want is generic shoujo.

This was actually the first gender-bender I read. So I liked it lots I don't know why some people don't like it, It's a really sweet love story. When I first read it I though it was the most individual thing ever. There was nothing else like it...well, of course I know now that it has it own category. Oh how naive I was back then. The whole 8 months ago, good times. You should read it. At some points you may feel disappointed, but it still has a good ending...no wait a minute. The ending wasn't that great. Wow through this collection of random thought fragments I have failed to have a point to it all. F**king amazing. Maybe it's do to the fact that it is almost 7:00 in the AM and I still haven't gone to sleep. You should read it.( may my logic prevail!)

It started out strong and had a nice ending point after one volume. Then two more volumes came along and dragged the score down. Then it peaked up again near the end.
Basically a filler middle gives it a lower score than the good parts deserve.

Great artwork, sweet characters, funny, dramatic, lighthearted, and not a copycat of any manga. Though, yes, you could say that this storyline has been used before (ex: Hana Kimi). But it strays from the way-too-innocent shoujo aspect. Personally, I love shoujo, but sometimes, I find the repitition amazingly annoying. It's nice to find a manga that leaves me feeling refreshed. Truly, truly, truly, truly, absolutely, and completely NOT a copycat of Hana Kimi. And if you absolutely have to declare it's a copycat, it doesn't matter... because it so owns Hana Kimi.
I could read this again and again. And though I'm not saying it didn't have some flaws, Boku ni Natta Watashi was so good, I overlooked them.
Give it a shot.

I have just finished reading the series and although it has some flaws it is one of the best shoujos i've read. And i found the oneshot in the last volume AWESOME,almost made me wish that was the main story!!
Overall it is a highly recommended manga!

Wow, im surprised a lot of people didn't like this manga O.O
I really enjoyed it! It was cute and the events that would happen in the manga was very entertaining and funny! Although yes, the relationship happened too fast, the things they go through is really enjoying. It really is like an adventure. I really enjoyed it and the art is amazing as well. Give it a try! Don't change your mind because of these comments.. everyone has different tastes in manga right? Give it a try because i say, It's worth it.

I rarely read shoujo, and this manga is the perfect reason why. How can a single character ruin an entirely good story? Gods she's so stupid it hurts me - and why is her mouth perpetually open anyway? Arrrghhh!
SiH chooses to scanlate some really good series - and some really bad ones...

I've read both Hana Kimi and Boku ni Natta Watashi, and I have to say that I enjoyed Boku ni Natta Watashi more. Each has their good points and bad points, but--without taking length into account--I would read Boku ni Natta Watashi again (actually, I have read it more than once), while I wouldn't read Hana Kimi again. I think that, on the whole, the characters in Boku ni Natta Watashi are much more realistic (though, truthfully, neither story line is entirely plausible).
The only thing I can think of that Hana Kimi did better than Boku ni Natta Watashi is that it took longer for the main male lead to discover his roommate was actually female. That drawn out process added drama to it and made the focus more on the gender bending aspect than the romance aspect.
Boku ni Natta Watashi, on the other hand, has a host of things that make it better than Hana Kimi. As I've mentioned, I find the characters more realistic overall. Adding to that, the sexuality aspect is dealt with much more in Boku ni Natta Watashi than it is in Hana Kimi. (Of course one could tie the sexuality aspect in to the gender bending aspect--in that sexuality is often defined by gender.) Either way, a boy and girl living together as teenagers and wanting to have sex seems much more realistic to me.
The ending to Boku ni Natta Watashi seemed much more realistic to me as well. As realistic as a shoujo manga can be, anyway.
Aside from the story line, I love this manga for the art. I'm very fond of Shimaki Ako's art style and similar art styles.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Momoko's issues with returning to life as a girl were very interesting. She even slips up and uses a male pronoun to describe herself. I like that Shimaki-san went there and illustrated those issues.
Aside from the story line, I love this manga for the art. I'm very fond of Shimaki Ako's art style and similar art styles.
