I stumbled upon this series completely by chance with no idea what was in store for me as I finished the first chapter I realized that this was something special looking back upon this series it is incredibly original and well written I found myself moved to tears multiple times while reading this never had any manga made me feel such depths of sorrow and heights of joy in such a short period of time I highly recommend this manga to anyone who is mature enough to appreciate this story and not afraid to cry

this manga was a very good manga. it made me think and sometimes made me cry. it is not for the weak of heart or for those that like the innocent type of shojo love.

i didnt like the ending. but with a manga that is sad most of the way through what else could you expect from the ending?

i reccomend it to those who can handle it.

Something's Missing? Not sure what...

Wow! This is a popular manga!

I think it's worth a look-see, for sure, but there are better expressed and more long-lasting impressions made by other serious-topic manga. Kusunoki-sensei did a lovely, clean job with the sharp, thick lined illustrations and spacing. Her style reminds me of Minekura-sensei (Saiyuki), especially around the eyes, but without the intense detail and emotion. It was an aesthetically pleasing, smooth art experience and delivery of frames nonetheless, but again, it wasn't breath-taking.

Her narration was worthy and delivered competently, but it lacked something. The young man seemed to just be blown along with the story, not truly making any decisions other than to accept what is given to him. He is very empathetic and likeable, but lacking climax. The young girl protagonist is also lack-lustre; undeniably, she is disturbed, but it never really seems real, her history. In fact, all the characters, from the sister to the jealous but human 'girlfriend' are realistic and understandable, but not entirely approachable. The narration perhaps is too slow or not enough happens, or maybe the story is just missing some sort of resolution.

All in all, it's still gentle and touching in a light way. But for the subject matter, it should have ripped my heart out.

Could be worse.

...There certainly are lots of worse romance stories out there, but this doesn't really take the cake either. But it could be worse. Far, far worse.

The heroine's (and the mangaka) situation certainly deserves every sympathy, and I do appreciate the take on their relationship. But I would wish she would make it shorter. The build feels very slow, too much drama, too much angst over unrequited loves, and one too many past confessions. And no thanks especially to the jealous girl. Kick her out and I'll be spared from several wtf moments and lots of unnecessary drama.

I like the childhood friend. And the sister. They're strong. And the heroine has her strong moment too, but the hero takes the cake in terms of self-condescending "I'm not worthy, she had dark past" angsts, tho, which is very strange as far as self-condescending comes.

And I think the future, as bleak as it seems to be, will make a pretty good future out of them. As far as seinen universe are concerned, theirs seems very bright compared to others.

But yeah, it could be done better.

Great Read

It seemed to end abruptly (almost rushed?) but I feel that it was for the best.

One of the things I liked the most about this manga is the end...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
"I'll love you only until you find someone more deserving". The lack of self-confidence that they both feel just makes you to want more. You can only hope that it's a "happily ever after"... that's how I try to see it as when I think of their future.

Anyways, Bitter Virgin is a great series. Definite read for anyone that doesn't mind shedding a few tears in the beginning.

Happy Ending???

I'm a happy ending kind of person and the ending to that story defientely wasn't happy. The story was suspenseful and the guy was really dedicated and cool to keep loving Aikawa despite her past because I know I couldn't be that generous. But the ending was so abrupt and didn't make sense. I'd like to ignore what they said about probably not being together forever but even the couple believes it themselves, what kind of ending is thatconfused It's like those movie endings where you go "sequel".

Inner strength will push us through...

The story [of Hinako] is something altogether uncommon in mangas or is something mangakas intentionally do not generally venture into [from what I've read so far].Hinako's struggle in the manga is a deliberate manifestation of her past. Her experience is something most of us only read or watch about; and I believe such survivors like her are worth the admiration of struggling to attempt living normally even with the burden they are bearing. If you like a manga that will show values such as trust and forbearance as an important mix of the story, check it out.

As I was rereading the story again, I felt that Kusunoki (mangaka) truly embraced the topic well with this short read. It was so powerful to see such acceptance from Daisuke, the same gender that had done Hinako wrong, and to see him accept her exactly as who she is. He never wanted more from her and he was fine with just making her feel confident again, and he was willing to do anything to achieve this simple personal mission. I also thought that it was genuine in how Hinako felt about Daisuke and becoming his friend by knowing their relationship would never be anything more. I felt the story was truly justified and kept to its most simplistic form of the issue so that readers can imagine what it's like to have a friend like Daisuke. I also appreciate that Kusunoki included Daisuke's sister's pregnancy, which helped him to better understand the female body and how it can be abused. This allowed him to understand Hinako on a more intimate level while still pushing her to come out of fear.

After rereading, I gave it 2 points less because I felt that a "harem" in this story was the most unrealistic part of the story. The bullying, the betraying, the conspiracies...they all seem a little too typical, like plots taken from other stories. It was entirely unoriginal and just didn't marinade well with what was so powerful. The ending was very sudden and was a last ditch effort to bring another "climax" into the story but it didn't work well. The relationship between the couple seemed ambiguous but I do appreciate that it was left this way.

I've have just re-read it for the third time [I believe it's the third time.]
And I think I have just fallen more in love with this series~~ [tho' this may be due to the fact that I can just empathize with it extremely well].
The only two things that I dislike [and still dislike] is the rushed ending [I know it was originally supposed to be 5 or 6 volumes, so it's only -.5] and the damned yandere b**tch Kazuki. Oh, how Kazuki annoyed me, I know she was there to keep tension and conflict, but honestly, I would've loved the story so much more if she didn't exist.
So, all in all, an 8.5 for me.

This is the best romance i have ever read (if ya think there is something better or similar, PM me)

Art is great, story is believable and characters are well though of. Dunno why people say that ending was rushed or that it was the worst ending you can think of, imo but this was probably the best ending to a romance manga as such, its seinen not a shojo after all, and no matter how i think about it its defenetly not tragic.

Overall its a must read!
