Give D.Gray-man a try/

The manga is in no way boring or confusing. D.Gray-Man is my favourite shounen manga by far. (With the exception of Pandora Hearts and a couple others). Why you ask? Well for starters:

1)No Romance- romance totally RUINS shounen mangas as far as I'm concerned. It's fine if it's friendship or whatever but when every other page is like "I'll save you *insert girl name here*" I just want to kill someone (there was a tiny bit of it with Lenalee, but that was more friendship than anything).
2)It has a slightly more dark and real-world-esque/old-euro feel to it. It does wonders for the manga in this case, and I love the style. The themes also compliment the characters nicely, and vice-versa.
3)Original concepts. I haven't come across another manga that has "Innocense" or "Noah", both are original concepts/terms (in this context) created by the author. The church thing and "akumas" has been done before, but I think Hoshino-sensei has done an great job with it. It all fits together nicely.

If that isn't enough, the art is good (although I prefer the middle art style as opposed to the newest style), the characters are good (and not annoying, not even the girls...) and the plot is intriguing enough.

UPDATE: As of 2012: The new art took some definite getting used to for me. The manga went on haitus right after a new ark began and that kind of threw me off. I'm not sure why, but the manga just doesn't have the same feel now as it did originally. The latest chapter (April 2012 issue) seems to be getting things back on track and shows a bit of promise on bringing back some of the original feel. The plot is still good even after a bit of a rough patch and it is still one of my favourite shounen manga. Imma gonna keep reading!

I've read a lot of shounen manga and I must say that this series does stand out from the typical shounen formula. The plot and atmosphere of the manga is a lot darker and sadder than most. I find that a great aspect of the series is the way that the characters really feel for the enemies they face and the tragic stories surrounding them. The Noah family contains many interesting villains to read about. Like others have said, the manga drags sometimes and characterization is a bit static but if you like the main character, it doesn't feel much like that. The art is beautiful and progressively gets better, although the gag filler didn't do much for me.

Check it out for a darker side of shounen and check out the anime, too, if you like the manga. It's surprisingly well-made for a shounen series and while there are filler episodes, what shounen anime doesn't?

It has all the elements of a good shounen that I would enjoy, but for some reason it just can't keep my attention. Earlier chapters were great, the art is beautiful, there's a decent plot, distinct style, and amusing characters, but despite my best efforts I could not fully enjoy the later chapters and it became a chore to keep up with. The story didn't draw me in and everything became incredibly convoluted so that the story seemed to trip over itself.

At first i watched the beginning episode of the anime but when it started to feel like fillers, i then wanted to read the manga to see how it was. It was way more better than the anime. I then got addicted to reading the manga i just dropped the lame anime. Wow i feel bad for thinking d gray man was boring but the manga made me change my perspective.

I've been following D.Gray-man pretty much since it began and i have to say i liked the series a lot, the characters were unique and different from all those others the shonen stories show us, there has been some speculation about the author's (Hoshino Katsura) gender, and indeed the author's style doesn't quite looks like that which a man would have, anyway, D. Gray-man has suffered many trouble during it's publication, hoshino katsura has been disabled about twice, and so placed in hiatus for a long time, tough katsura has gladly recovered and resumed D.-Grayman's publication i'll have to say the series is facing a very rough time, First of all, as we know, magakas tend to improve their drawing style during long publications, but katsura's style is morphing (altough improving as well) into something more like a yaoi-esque styled story like those of Kaori Yuki which i do not found wrong or faulting in any way but rather no appropiated for it's demographic, this has been reflected in the surging number of D.Gray-man fangirls nowadays , that aside, we also have some truly noticeable lessening in the story's quality, at such expense that one cannot say where did the seriousness of the series is, the latest chapters of this manga suffer from a terrible and inestable art variation and plot thickness which those of us who followed this series from the very beginning cannot bear.

Well the name and the image of The Millenium Earl (the antagonist) put me off at first as I thought this manga would be too childish but I watch a few episodes of the anime out of sheer boredom and was hooked. Initially I loved it, the plot was intriguing and the characters interesting. Lately though I'm beginning to habour a deep desire to shoot Lenalee. She started off a kick-ass fighter and has degraded into a pathetic, useless crybaby. I hate it when a female character ends up being present solely to show of the chivalry of the guys and give the group a weak link to protect so they can do the whole 'I'll never forgive you. I won't give up' speech. Also the plot is lagging. They focus more on pumping lots of fight scenes into in that actually developing the storyline and it only drags the plot on. The previously fantastic art style has morphed into something unappealing to the point of being off-putting and the same themes seem to be repeated. There is still potential here as the plot thickens but this series no longer has me eagerly await new releases. It still surpasses the likes of Naruto and Bleach though.

Plot = 7/10 (fight scenes get a bit tiresome after a while)
Art = 9/10
Characters = 8.5/10
Overall = 8/10

Overall the characters are generally well designed but mostly static. At times the amount of characters addressed in a chapter is overwhelming and causes me to lose track of the situation. This is accented by the fact that the story is progressing rather slowly and often leaves me feeling that nothing happened in given chapters. Perhaps the flow is more consistent in volume format but I have doubt. As of chapter 165, after a noticeable 30ish chapter slump, the series appears to be back on track. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

I never thought I would say this but: It´s getting boring... I really like d. gray man but i thing they just can put in some other charackters like girls!!! (maybe Just because I´m a girl, too.. :-) and with it a little lovestory!!! even though lenalee is a girl I don´t like her that much... but when i think more about it love/romance would ruin the whole series... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!

I find myself getting bored whilst reading this. Somehow despite the characters (I am only reading this for Kanda appearances now) I find myself skimming the pages and glazing over when reading fights fights and more fights.

Even though this series have surpassed all my expectation , the art is quiet nice and it have a decent and quiet unpredictable plot to go with it but still i fail to find it enjoyable to read.The character are full of crybabies, they're weak and emoish, they end up crying and feeling bad over anyone who dies over the course of the story which is like in the end of almost every arc, someone dies.
Overall this isnt a bad shonen manga at all, better than other one like Naruto,Op,and Bleach and stuff
