I really enjoyed the story especially the first arc, but the ending gives me goosebumps. Nevertheless I still recommend it, because it is 10/10 in the first 24 chapter, 8/10 till ch. forty-something. 5/10 afterwards.

I agree with fuzetsucans in that you can stop reading at ch24 and it be a really good story. It was interesting seeing how he reacted in raising a child, from getting a daycare to bedwetting, and was a pleasant read. If u like drama u can even keep reading after the skip and be satisfied (i dont so it was more annoying and shoujo-es). I think this may have been cancled and rushed though due to how it ended

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I think the part that shows this most is the second to last chapter when rin visits her mom. Through out the entire series, all 54 chapters, we were told that her dad was daikichi's grandpa. So its almost incest when she starts liking him. Then all of a sudden, *boom* you were adopted :D....WTF! ARE U SHITTING ME? that's the biggest cop out since ever. So many ways to end this and the author goes out of her fucking way just to have the mains end up together. FUCK THAT! its rushed, theres no feeling in it, and honostly it just feels weird since like 20 pages b4 he was acting like a normal parent. God im so glad i had stopped being connected with the characters at the time skip cause i couldnt imagine how pissed id be if i was still interested in the story and this shit happened.

I enjoyed this series fairly well in the beginning, a cute slice-of-life that I go 'awwww' to.
Even after the time skip I enjoyed it... then near the end...

She ends up just like her mom meaning, she has a thing for older men. But I'm probably going to be hated for saying that, oh well... I still don't hate the series. And yes I can sorta understand why she likes him but I'm still saying she's still like her mom.

^okay let's get to that later.

Good concept, it is something I like. Definitely not something that happens in real life, but the characters and pretty much everything else is realistic in a slice of life sort of way. To a point I got bored.

Then somewhere around ch45
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
All of a sudden Rin feels something for Daikichi. That is just unbelievable. There were no hints of this at all, way too sudden, coming up out of nowhere. She even liked Kouki for the longest time. I could see it happening when I was reading, but put it off my mind soon, especially after the time skip. Then all of a sudden--- bam. I doubt it's true feelings or that it will last, since it occurred in the last two volumes.

Knowing that the anime will soon air, I frankly couldn't hold my curiosity much longer and decided to give it a shot but at first I did not want to dig in too deep so I won't ruin the anime. But the premise was so promising that I couldn't resist so I ended up reading up to date. The first part of the manga was the sweetest part. Seeing Rin as a child and Daikichi acting like a father was something really cute at the beginning. I liked this manga because it remained realistic until the end and it did not neglect the nature of humans.

The ending did not destroy anything, infact I was anticipating it. It was like 1 out of like 50 types of possible endings but in my opinion, the most likely to be happenning. How so?
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The words "3rd grade relative" were actually mentioned just in the 2nd half of the manga but that was already obvious from the beginning. If the mangaka wished to end this one in another way then he might've chose another type of setting having Rin as an even closer relative. Technicaly I don't see any iregularity. They are two different people, connected just by their deceased grandfather, so teoretically they are not sharing the same genes, just a few of them, genetically speaking this is not something malicious. What I want to point to the ignorant people that kept saying the ending is disappointing is that you guys do not have any life experience at all. Of course Daikichi seemed like a father in the beginning because he had to take care of Rin since he assumed the responsabillity. But as time changes people change as well and feelings change too. That's why I say, that you people take the nature of humans pretty lightly. The ending might seem a little bit odd but lets not forget that this is slice of life, and stuff like this happen in real life as well.

All in all, a splendid work. I hope that the anime will do justice towards the manga.

since i found out that they are going to end up together... ugh. seriously... he's been like her dad...all the time... it's like being with your own father... and that's just wrong. I don't understand why the author pushed such a cliché ending... >_> wHAT WAS WRONG ABOUT STAYING FATHER AND A CHILD??? seriously. I am disappointed...

It is one of those manga that were really nice, but ending destroyed it for me irreparably...Pity. >.<

I really liked this manga, even the time skip aspect I was ok with, but the ending just ruined it for me. Granted I haven't read the last three volumes, and I'm sure there's development there which gets this manga to it's conclusion, but after finding out where it all ends up I can't say that I want to keep reading.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I originally thought this was one of those rare manga where an adopted child is really thought of as the new parent's child and they keep their relationship as that of family. I was wrong. The child ends up with her guardian in the end, which I've been ok with in other stories, but I just don't feel this one should have ended up that way. They really had a parent/child relationship and I liked how it developed that way, having them end up together just doesn't seem to fit with the amount of realism in the first half of the story, especially since there were perfectly good people for them to end up with besides each other.

I'm just disappointed that it went in the direction it did after setting itself up so differently in the first 6 volumes

My Girl by Sahara Mizu is like everything good about this manga with none of what ruined it. It's everything I was hoping this manga would have been. You should check it out if, like me, you initially liked this series but the ending ruined it for you.

It just seems like this series is going from a good, solid, well-thought-out slice of life to a semi-complicated shoujo. I don't really recommend anything beyond volume 4, but to each his own.

The way that it ended was just...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Even though the fact that Daikichi pulls a Woody Allen at the end freaks me completely the hell out...I'm actually much more dissatisfied with the fact that he accepted Rin's feelings and starts a romantic relationship with her out of some kind of sense of obligation. That's actually kind of crappy.

So in that sense, the ending wasn't all that great. Again, the first four volumes are f****** phenomenal. After those volumes... meh...

This series really disappointed me.

I highly reccomend this manga, the relationship between Daikichi and Rin is quite adorable, and their interactions are quite realistic. While I liked the story more before the timeskip, I understand that it was neccesary for how the author wanted the story to end, and I in all honesty think that the timeskip was done well. I disagree with people who say that the quality of the plot took a dramatic downturn, because while it is true that the direction of the story and tone of the plot do change quite drastically, this is something that the author felt that they needed to do, and I feel that it was executed well. The manga finished its run in Japan this april, so I already know how the story ends, and I must say, I am quite pleased with how everything turned out.

Major spolier warning-

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Rin soon confesses that she has always had feelings for Daikichi and while Daikichi freaks out for a bit, after Rin graduates from high school, and it becomes apparent that she is adament about staying with Daikichi and taking care of him for the rest of his life, they end up getting married. This is also why I see the need for the time-skip, as it would have been too abrupt and not a little bit akward if the manga went from the pre-time skip phase to an ending with Rin confessing and them getting married with no lead-up.

As I said before, I am quite pleased with how things turned out. While some readers might feel that this development came out of the blue, and that Rin should have gotten together with her childhood friend, I feel that the only one who ever truly cared about Rin and loved her no matter what was Daikichi, and that he is a better match for Rin that anybody else. He took her in when no one else would, and raised and cared for her, even though he knew that it would make his life much more difficult.

Rin's friend(I forget his name at the moment- Kouki or something) also felt very one-dimensonal in his love for Rin, and didn't quite seem like he fit. There is also the most important factor, the fact that person Rin loved was in fact Daikichi and no one else, that made them a good match.

For people complaining about the age difference, while it is admittedly quite large, around 22 years, I don't really think it makes that much o f adifference if they really care about eachother.

And of course, to the inevitable droves of people who will soon be squealing about incest(i'm looking at you bimbosilly and others), its not like they are brother and sister or actually father and daughter. She's his grandfathers daughter with a different mother than his own grandmother, which makes her only 1/8 related blood-wise. Honestly I wouldn't really care if they were brother and sister; I've never had a problem with incest appearing in manga or any other work of fiction, or in reality for that matter either, as long as both parties consent. If they love each other, why should it matter to anyone? And don't even get started on "birth defects" and all of that. But that is a whole different topic.

I think over all the ending was quite sweet and probably the best ending that honestly could have occured.

Overall a very good read, I give it a 10/10.

I sincerely dislike this trait of Japanese fiction- you can't grow a child and marry it. Its creepy and gives no respect to a parent-child relationship at all -its disgusting on many levels
