Description
Yasuoka Shion lost her parents, and her voice, when she was young...in a murder.
She was found amidst a blood-soaked room, and the only hint for the suspect was a Shougi board and one piece: the King. Now, Shion steps into the world of female professional Shougi players. As her popularity and fame slowly rises, so do the questions about her past, particularly the murder case that was never solved.

This manga is wonderful, I simply jump on the next scanlated chapter and wait for it inbetween. The art is good and the tension is kept up just as well, if not better than in Hikaru no Go. The game rules are more complex though so one doesn't pick them up as one goes along, will take a couple more volumes until I get the hang of it properly.
I love Shion's personality. The art and story are both very impressive. While I don't understand the Shougi at all, this manga still sucks me in
Pretty good, but not spectacular

Art is pretty good, story is okay; it's pretty good, but nothing spectacular either. A must read for shogi fans, however.
The ending kinda sucked for me, though. Predictable, didn't feel right to me. Other than that, a pretty good read.

One of the disadvantages of being a non-native is that you miss out a lot of nuances when it comes to mangas like Chihayafuru... and this one. But then it speaks a lot when that handicap does not stop the manga from being beautiful, and addictive.
Shion no Ou is about a four year old Shion being discovered in a sea of her parents' blood. Taken in by kind neighbours, Shion grows up to be an amazing Shogi player. Almost, as if she were chosen by the god of Shogi...
It has been eight years, and the murders remain unsolved. Meanwhile, as the media become more aware of the talented young Shogi player with the tragic past, Shion realises that she does remember fragments of the events of that fateful night. And that the murderer might just be someone close to her.
The artwork is hands down one of the most gorgeous ones have seen. The portraits - yes, instead of graphic art, each rendering of characters is a portrait, that hide subtle nuances. The tension within the games (though hard to follow), the determination of each character, as well as the hunt for the murderer - each of them have been amazingly portrayed. And about the final reveal - some of the comments below claim that it was too obvious. Maybe it was. It is obvious that we readers love to guess who the criminal is when we read mystery novels/stories, and this manga does a fine job leading us on wild goose chases!
So I say, if you are tired of shojo heroines go 'kyaa kyaa' over trivial situations, or tragic heroines burdened with saving the world etc and want to appreciate a manga well written and well drawn, pick this one. And if you are anything like me, you would want to reread it once you know the ending, and appreciate the subtle hints the author had left behind all along (and cry victoriously that you knew it!)!
10 stars, well deserved.

At first when I started this series, I never watch or read Hikaru no Go, so this was my first time touching something on a board game, but it was pretty catchy somehow. I started with the anime like usual, long ago, I even rewatched it few times already.
Although I know nothing about chess or shougi despite the translation notes and things, it doesn't matter as long as you're in it for the story. You can understand that like chess, shougi and the personality ties in together which I've enjoyed despite being a complete idiot in shougi.
At first I've noticed that sometimes Saitou looked funny in between when he was crossdressing but at the same time, whenever you see the close up shots of anyone, the art is amazing. The anime also covered up a lot of the same major points of the manga but I have to say, the manga brings more satisfaction with a real conclusion.

This is going to be made into an anime! I'm really excited because from what I've read so far, it is very interesting even though Shougi is harder for me to comprehend then Go.
Reminds me of Hikaru no Go, cept with BISHOUJOS! The art is very very impressive.
