Description
For the sooty industrial town’s lads there’s only one point of light: The Light Club, a secret brotherhood they’ve organized in an abandoned factory. They’re on the verge of booting up their crowning achievement, a “thinking machine” fueled by lychee fruits. At the same time, the middle schoolers’ cooties-fearing solidarity is devolving into a downright National Socialist muck of murderous paranoia, perverse aestheticism, and (not always) suppressed homosexuality.

It's a touching story about schizo nazi bishounens building a robot to take over the world (supposedly).
If you manage to pierce the veil of schizo ramblings and delusion, you'll find a manga about growing up and the absurdity of middle schooler psyche.
Very recommended for people liking their manga to be GENUINE, not just generic 'entertainment' pumped out en masse

Good morning Lovers of the Ruins! It's time for the execution!

Teenage prettyboys in Nazi clothes kill women after school in a dismal world where no one seems to notice their crimes.

I thought I would stop reading it after the first couple of chapters of torture porn, but the story abruptly lightens up and the characters suddenly change from bland-but-fearsome lunatics into bland and soppy little boys. Sci-fi elements come out of nowhere as they build a robot and the robot learns how to love. Meanwhile the boys go on about wanting "women" but they're all clearly gay for the boss. And that's it, it ends. The change in tone is so drastic I was startled and read to the end.

I don't think it paid off. It's impossible to like any of the characters; they're all sadistic fascist weaklings who cry about how lonely they are. The author is obviously in love with them so they never grow or develop in any way. The victims are barely there, and the boys are just a grabbag of yaoi cliches. It feels like a children's book, but full of masturbatory gore.

The art is great. If you like dilapidated settings, check out the environments here. If you like flamboyant edgelords with gorgeous faces, this comic has them in spades. It is rare and special to see this level of merciless violence mixed evenly with emotionally childish romance. But it didn't earn my respect.

Manga Erotic F

I did not know Furuya Usamaru untill Litchi Hikari Club. Now he is my most favorite author. Heh...

Furuya stories are not for everyone. He does not create classical horrors he does provocative bloody psychological stuff.

I love Litchi Hikari Club for the idea itself. Young guys scared of turning into adults yet full of disturbing throughs. They have beautiful idea about making better world yet they want to do it the most horrible way of all. Those schools uniforms which reminds nacistics, torturing people, looking for beautiful girl who is more into ugly monstrum then young guys. It is ironic, provocitve, bizzarde and symbolistic too. You can not be prudent or expect ghost story nor The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Furuya worked for avantgarde magazine and his pictures are in Japanese Erotica artbook. I think just the name of magazine where the Litchi serie was published explain everything - Manga Erotic F.

Honestly, the "reading experience" itself is a 7 for me, but the aftertaste makes me add another point.

I don't like gore, but this manga is not that. Having read the previous reviews, I was even surprised it wasn't as gory as I expected. After that lychee stuff, I couldn't even think of this manga as gore LOL Halfway through the story I could predict the end but I find this story quite entertaining. However, when I've finished and tried to think back to the story, I found many things that are thought provoking.
Well, maybe this manga is more than what it is?

Horror that is horror. Tragedy that is tragedy. This manga can only be described as disturbing. I feel very shaken up upon reading this manga. I think for the most part I didn't enjoy the manga itself. Art is okay but there's so much gore, so many disturbing scenes that the plot really just felt mediocre. Ugh, gruesome.

a bit slow but picked up at the end

the first chapter is interesting, we got a nice view of a teacher's visceral content. and then they got quite slow, what with the internal struggle of the group and the transformation of the machine. i must say i thought the machine will just be their imagination, but it is not. then this pick up at the last chapter where they have a great bloodfest, it worth all the slow chapters.

now, people might think i'm in this only for the bloods, and that is true only because i don't think other aspect of the manga is that great. the plot is highly interesting, but i just find the whole thing unreal, so i don't really care about the mysteries or the characters. they look like caricatures, when i can only see their surface craziness, i don't really understand why they are crazy deep inside, thus i enjoy their antics lightly.

the art is hella great though.

First chapter and I`m alrdy freaked. I can go through it but it`s just really disturbing. It was dark, beautiful and evil at the same time. Gore isn`t something I could easily take but there seems to be a deeper story behind it. At first it would seem a shallow personification of evil but maybe it would be more understandable soon. Gonna add more after i finish but so far, it`s what I think.

Edit: Just finished~
Oh God. Grisly amazing. It was gory that I had to turn away and scroll down real quick but it was beautiful. How Zera was obsessed with `beauty` and
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
how the betrayal started and ended. it was a fitting ending for a delusional and crazy kid `dictator` (mini-Hitler) <-but much worse

It was quite wonderful how a girl turned everything upside down, made their Litchi 'human' and the ending was simply blissful and haunting at the same time. It was one of the best psychological gore I`ve encountered so far. What made it so disturbing was that they were middle school kids and they could`ve used their talents for something more productive. But I guess it`s a reflection of human nature and the truths of this world. Simply amazing. Though without the nasty and sickening stuff, I guess this won`t be as 'guignol' as it is so a must read but not for the faint of heart.

i kindda agree with roxslide... it is kindda trying too hard to be evil.. not that i am saying that that is a bad thing.. it very entertaining to watch sadists and all but its weird at the same time..

the story... hmmm.. at first i didnt get it... they were like screaming german words <which were later translated>... but i get it after reading all the availabled chapters... i mean the time settuing was in the 80's right?? cause it this were to happen now... there is no way that these kids are gonna get away with this shit...

the characters.. they are freaks but they are not just plain freaks they all have their own different personalities and i liek that.. and also some background on how the club was formed and wjho the true leader is...

the yaoi thing and the acting like Jesus thing was... no comment... it actually made me laugh... freakish...

but i dont knwo if i find it pleasant.. <duh it guro.. how could it be plasant??> but i liike it though.. cant wait for the next chapter!!!

>edit<
so i finished this thing now..
after reading my comments before i remembered by initial impression of this, i thought that it was slightly freakish and funny xD but back then this was ongoing and though i wasnt into guro i am not one with a weak stomach and im kindda.. hella sadistic.. so saying that i moved on to reading the sequel - prequel, and damn it i gotta say that one was one hell of a mistake. you see when you see these boys when theyre all short wearing - innocent looking especially Tamiya whom i thought was really hot and delicious, you'll start feeling for them and rooting for them and i gotta say when the last page was turned my heart just dropped. damn it, it just dropped.
well, i gotta say i will now continue looking forward to the prequel scans, as for this one i gotta say nicely done. it was good, psychological, but yet.. i cant help but wish that.. but whatevers doesnt matter now. this one i'll remember for a long time. smile )

Yeah, it's disturbing and whatnot but to be honest, it's not THAT bad. the characters, plot and the motive behind it all kinda makes you skip over it. also as other people have mentioned, it appears it tries too hard to be evil. though i don't agree with that 100% (maybe 60% true), it makes it...less disturbing and helps you remember that this is a work of fiction and that disturbing quality of it is a channel for a deep message.

this is definitely interesting and poses the million year old question, what does it mean to be human? i'm not into gore and what not, but i was able to swallow this and i enjoyed it. My favorite character is Tamiya smile

I have to say, I think I'll be purchasing this from vertical now that I've read the first four chapters. I'm curious to know how it ends.

That said, no one in their right mind would read this manga. Which means I enjoyed it quite a bit, so far. The evil did feel a bit forced at times, but I still thought the concept was interesting. There's gore [not much of it yet, but still], nudity [male and female], a touch of yaoi [normally I hate that stuff, but this kind of situation is one of the few instances where I don't mind it] and some kind of machine thing. There's not a lot of backstory, and it's provided in the form of a flashback type thing. Mostly this interested me because I love Grand Guignol plays in general.

Furuya Usamaru is a pretty weird dude. I was kind of thinking Short Cuts was indicative of what he was about but... this and Innocents Shounen Juujigun are just out there. If you like the previously mentioned elements, by all means, give it a shot. It's not much of an investment at 1 volume.
