To preface, I am 100% writing this review with rose-tinted glasses on, because the ML (Dohyeon) is absolutely everything I could possibly want (both physically and emotionally) in a man and more.
I picked this up because I read Ryuha's other work (2020) and liked the art, and I saw black-haired, glasses-wearing, suit-donning seme. That made this series immediately go to the top of my TBR list.
Firstly, the art is a bit awkward (mostly with the proportions), especially at the beginning. I'm not surprised since authors' first works usually have awkward art. It gets a lot better towards the end. I'll admit that I'm superficial and get put off easily by awkward art, but my gut told me to just push through with this one and I'm so glad I did.
The title of this series is misleading. The plot/storyline actually plays a huge role in the development of the characters' relationship, and while their relationship starts out physical, the emotional aspects of it become way more important pretty quickly. In fact, I would say the centerpiece of this story is them trying to work out being together despite all the obstacles that get thrown at them because of their jobs.
I really like the MC (Yeonu). At surface level he seems to be a stereotypical twinky uke, but he's actually far from useless. He is quite stubborn and very confident in himself when necessary. There's multiple times in the story where stands up both for himself and for the ML. Yeah, he does have to get saved by the ML a couple of times, but to be fair he's supposed to be 5'4 and skinny, so it's realistic he needs help if he's getting jumped by a physically capable, average-sized dude.
Both the MC and ML are quite smart and shrewd (especially the ML), too. It's believable that both of them would hold their respective jobs (an ME and a DA). I enjoyed the crime/mystery part of the story a lot and it genuinely feels like Ryuha did their research and cared about making the series an actual crime/mystery series, not just having the crime/mystery part half-heartedly thrown in as an excuse to get our MC and ML to interact.
This series would be a 10 except for the fact I have to knock down a point because I thought the love triangle in S2 was absolutely unnecessary. Jae Koo as a character was fine, and I accept him for plot purposes, but him going after Yeonu just felt like a crappy, cliche excuse to stir up drama between the MC and ML. At a minimum it never felt like Yeonu was seriously considering Jae, and more like he was just too ignorant and naive and kept on falling for Jae's traps when in reality all he wanted to do was see Dohyeon... so like, I'm not too mad about the love triangle because of that.
TL;DR art is a bit awkward, especially at first, but it gets better. Good storywriting. I like both the MC and ML. Definitely recommend, especially if you're into mystery/crime genres and love a glasses-wearing seme.
