Boring at best

The story starts with homophobia, and just goes downhill from there. The art is so bad it’s hard to tell the characters apart and they look totally different from chapter to chapter. There’s no character development or build-up of anything. The only thing that elicits any emotional reaction is when one of the characters falsely accuses his step-dad of sexual abuse for no reason. Literally wtf? Terrible.

The feeling is so real. I can't help reading this over and over again. For some reasons, this is the only manga that I cry every time I read it. There are scenes that I think impossible to have been drawn if it's not by the author's own experience. Any way, this is one of the most precious mangas I've ever read. I hope there are more works from this author.

A misunderstanding

Even though this is quite old, I Just thought I'd mention, before anyone gets excited. There is no trans character. It was simply a misunderstanding.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The main character's father is with another man, who MC sees as a mother figure. The boyfriend was confused by this, and so he asked if the mother figure was trans, but the answer was no. Even though it could be read as sort of brushing off the question, the reality is simply that mother figure guy is just a regular cis man

the main couple was cute but kinda meh. minimal characterization and seemed run of the mill.

i LOVED the story about sunohara's parents, especially motoi the trans man. i need his backstory right now!!!

It felt slightly boring. Even though it had some drama the general feeling was very low in energy. I couldn't get excited at all over the characters.
Not bad, but not really good either.

READ IT RIGHT NOW TO BE HONEST...

  • Other than the art, pretty much a masterpiece
  • a "gay rights," highschool butch version of tmfly's `` So Do You Want to Go Out Or...? `` / `` How Do We Relationship? `` sjajskdljasjd honestly if u liked kase-san and bento both this and "how do we relationship" will be a much needed upgrade.
  • uses the f slur at the very start and also plays around with problematic abuse tropes for maybe 0.0000001 seconds at the beginning. we get it, the protagonist is a tryhard and too edgy 4 u lmao
    Spoiler (mouse over to view)
(as a comedic foil he acts like a complete fool and calls a cis gay man a woman... hmmm my credulous friend shinomiya is so gullible, hmmmm he thinks this individual is my stepfather... hmmmm wait what if i get him to think this is my lady dad? what if i say he's my mom and not just my adoptive mother figure... what if i'm as f-cking confusing as possible??? so edgy. wow) yeah there's sooo much interesting characterisation but aaaaaaargh... YMMV but i don't think that the subversiveness came across! i even got offended the 2nd time i read this through but. like i said, it all depends on the mindframe u are in when u open the tankobon and read through it i think?

    #yourmileagemayvary

The way that romeo and juliet was described by a critic as a story about the madness of being young and in love "as youth sees it" rather than as mature adults with common ----king sense kind of applies. but still, watch out for the slur, and for other childish not-very-edgy jokes lol. it gets to the point that you can sit there and think the author is 100% playing loose and fast with people's sexuality and conflating sexual orientation with gender... it'd be interesting for someone that is actually part of the trans and nonbinary population to tackle a similar narrative because this reads as some basic ignorance to me. in my early draft of this review i said i would love to take my transmasculine booty to japan and talk to the author "with love and respect" i said. in 2016 i was so angry. i just see it as corny now. it's just...pure ignorance to be honest, and maybe it will seem more and more like outdated, regressive laziness going into the 2020s, depending on how sexual minorities organize in that part of the world as well as globally. personally, i hope that it will seem more careless, clumsy and culturally irrelevant...in that case, that's the burden of the author, and not mine--and that's why, 3 years later, i still like that edgy bit and can forgive the characters. i hope kurosawa knows better and does better and just is better! if you're of a similar mindset and don't want that noise, do keep it in mind! otherwise,
give this a read. it's nicely written.
  • chapter 4 and 5 are incredible! i love that there's NOTHING of the random xD humour.... lmao.
  • highly recommended!!!

First Impression...

After getting past the first impression this left and reading the rest as almost a different story it was a cute slice of life of the characters. You never got really pulled into the characters themselves - just a lot of surface interactions and simple romance. I feel there could have been a lot more depth if several pages had not been wasted on such a bad misunderstanding/first impression set up.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The false rape/incest with step-parent was in poor taste. Not only did the mangaka set it up that the love interest misunderstood but also very deliberately (and admittedly skillfully) twisted it to make the reader also believe our protagonist was in an unwanted sexual relationship with his not-blood-related-father. Then to turn around and laugh at the love interest for protecting him based on that deliberate mislead just further rubbed salt in the insult.

However, after that initial sub plot, the story is a simple and sweet romance good for a quick read.

There's something very subdued about this manga. It's sweet, but not saccharine. It's not too much of anything which makes it feel like somehow it's not enough; but because of that it's not overly burdened by tropes or cliches, which is refreshing in this genre. I highly recommend reading this series if you haven't already. It's only one volume, the art is beautiful (although it is a sketchy style, if you dislike that), and the characters are more or less three-dimensional. I really enjoyed this manga; I wish there was a sequel to see where the relationship between Sunohara and Yoshino goes.
