To be honest, I found this amongst other stories under my smut hunting for my 1990s aesthetic project on Mangarock.
I've seen most shoujo and josei stories, hell, according to Mangarock, it is shoujo manga but after I've finished reading this in one sitting, I could say a few things:
Hell no, this is different from most shoujo ones because this was heavier, realistic unlike shoujo that is usually idealistic. This is only genre wise.
Plot and character wise, god I love from the very beginning to the last, it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Every single scene. All realistic characters who I appreciated. Music and its history as the centre point, bits of misadventures and smut even with incest at last to have me not knowing what to think and expect.
At first, I thought Tendou was the MC but lmao. Anyway, I was Tendou supporter in the beginning bc of great stories but as Mikami said, Tendou was not ballsy enough so he was out of picture for a while. As Mikami and Kanon were actually good pair as to support each other, I find myself veering to this ship but once I learned about Mikami with Kanon's mom, well, idk what to think honestly. At this point, Tendou became better and supporting all while she was at her worst from the first to last, so I changed back. Kanon's late mom, Gara, was at fault here so it's understandable Kanon had lost it at everything and everyone but Tendou thru his words have slapped her back to the reality, proved that everyone (literally) had equal share of their own struggles.
The ending wasn't confusing at all, it's rather satisfying to me. Unlike some have said here that it felt like a cliffhanger. As it has shown: Mikami had accepted everything, gave the closure we all needed thru the eternal symphony that summed up the entire manga: music itself as the authentic, unbreakable bond between him and Kanon, which she eventually understood. Just like Kanon's with her late mom, Tendou, and Mongolia. Fair enough, I think.
Aesthetic wise, esp. in volume 1, Mongolia thing to include for the story, it was honestly very 1990s thing to do at that time. The style did have some leftovers of 1980s, but definite enough to stand on its own: softer, yet still rough but not as rough as 1980s were. 2000s and 2010s are way too soft tbh. Nice panels also, with neat bubble texts as usual from this genre. I did year and age math in my head as I read this for aesthetic sake lmao so this may not that important for some heh but anyway, this manga was released around 1995. Mikami was 33 (1961-62), Kanon was 19 (1975-76), Tendou's unknown. Mikami did it with Kanon's mom when he was 14 around 1975 right. Kanon saw Mikami's 1980s and 1970s pics, esp. his 1980 pic that got me chuckling, because he looked like he just came out of Blue Lagoon (1980).
My fav scenes, hard to say but according to my screenshots thus it has to be Mongolia stuff at its first and last, how Kanon was totally a straight shooter unlike most female MC around that time even today if it were shoujo: she who did come at Tendou to pay her debt to him, next with the stranger in that unknown Kanon hotel in Tokyo, then Say Anything (1989) like rainy scene around telephone box where both Kanon and Mikami eventually caved in (I think). Kanon's mom. The eternal symphony. What else.
No wonder Saito won the award in shoujo genre for this manga in 1996. Which clearly proven how she loved music thru this manga and she did have a knack of storytelling. I don't understand why isn't this josei genre as it fits more compared to shoujo honestly but ok. I'm surprised these comments here are some years apart in between, so I guess it's really that underrated.
That's all for now, I think.

This manga started out beautifully and was your everyday typical GOOD shoujo, not like the cliched ones nowadays....I was very captivated towards it with the beautiful romance between Mikami and Kanon. However, knowing that this manga does have incest as one of its main themes, I thought it made it work. It wasn't like those incest manga were the two leads are all sappy and sad that they can't be together, but later defy the odds against their guardian's wishes.
Spoiler ahead...(idk how to do that spoiler covering thing)
I finished reading the manga in Chinese raw. Kanon and Mikami fall in love with each other, prob the otp of the manga. However, Mikami is the father of Kanon. When Mikami was still 14 years old, he met Kanon's mother while she was taking photos of him. They fell in love and did this and that....When Kanon first shows Mikami the photo of her mother, he is shocked knowing that his lover was his daughter, tbh it made me extremely depressed. Mikami doesn't tell Kanon and he runs away back to his wife. The wife doesn't like Mikami and stabs him in the back (literally, with a knife). Kanon and Tendou travel together. A few years later they both meet Mikami and Kanon is in a concert with Mikami. Tendou becomes saddened at the relationship and bond that they both have for each other (Tendou was planning to propose to Kanon). He realizes that nobody could come in between them and leaves the concert hall. Kanon runs in the rain and finds him and they are together. <<<That's pretty much the end of the series. It was really disappointing in how it ended and slightly ambiguous. Did she end up with Tendou? Does she still love Mikami? These are prob the biggest questions I have for the entire manga.

I REALLY hope this get picked back up by scanlators again as that was a heck of a place to stop...talk about a cliff hanger! If only I knew Japanese! (T^T) ..... Seriously the curiosity is killing me!
anyway, so far it is pretty good. I like Saito Chiho's work, so despite romance playing a bigger part than the music, I am thoroughly enjoying the shoujo drama. (not to mention the eye candy ^_^ )
SO...If there are any amazing guardian angel scanlators who are wonderful enough to pick this manga up I would love you guys forever! <3

At first, with music tag, i was hoping this manga would focus on education/career journey of the protagonist than pure romance. Unfortunately i was wrong. It's another shoujo where everything is all about romance while trying to add a twisted element (incest). The music is a plot device to support the whole romance story. Well, i like they bring out taboo subject, love between a young dad and his daughter. But overall this manga is.. okay. For me, the ending felt inconclusive.

Kanon still hadn't given up on Mikami. But Mikami had. He held a concert together with Kanon, where at the stage Kanon finally understand that only Music can unite them together. The scene shifted with Tendo waiting Kanon for restaurant dinner. She didn't appear until the restaurant was closed. Tendo has been trying to propose Kanon for multiple times. This time also. He went out after that and there Kanon appeared to be late. She may accept Tendo's proposal this time, she may not.. And that's the ending scene.

I thought that this had potential to be a magnificent manga, but it severely let me down.
It should not be labeled under the category "Strong Female Lead" since most of the time she was dependent on a man and she was strung along every which way. It also has many moments where she could clearly fight off advances in the beginning, but the rest of the time she hardly even bothered to.
I clearly did not like the manipulative story line that relays a message that a woman needs a man and can get thrown about by a man's whims. Women are not like that and it is distasteful for them to be seen in a light so very often that they need a man and his support to survive. Most women do not have that victim of abuse mindset.

I love Saito Chiho's work, but at the same time I am very afraid of them as most are very tragic. This story is a tale of love and music, where upon only music can accept their love. It was hard reading this as my emotions all boiled up, leaving a heavy emotional scar as I watch her character grow and walk down into a path of no return.
I do not know how to rate this, as my favoritism for Tendou blinds me. In fact, this manga has scarred me so much that I am reminded time in time again how they can make music out to be so strict and scary, completely destroying traditional and raw music for their so-called work/art of society.
The music in this depicts Kanon's character very well. From the traditional, raw and simple music she began with from Mongolia to the very powerful complex of orchestra music is exactly like her character. From simple, to complicated, somewhat tainted. Exactly to the point of no return.

Saitou Chiho is just one of those mangaka I can't read, but I thought this manga would dispell that. It did not. Like all of her other works, there's such an attempt to make it meaningful, romantic, and... epic that it's grossly cheesy and overwritten. It's not the worst I've read, definitely not, but her works have the potential to be amazing if only they weren't so overdone!
In short, it's so lyrical that when I read it I feel like I'm dipping my hand in oil.
