A real fantasy masterpiece

If there was ever a fantasy manga that impressed me more than Ubel Blatt, I don't remember it. Hell, I'll lay it to you straight, I'm downright BORED of the fantasy genre. When I started off reading Ubel Blatt, I fully expected to discard it to the reject pile within the first 3 chapters or so.

But I din't. The manga has a lot going against it - blatant fanservice (although I suppose its a plus to some), senseless violence, no shortage of bishounens (I'm sure the ladies would love that. Then again, how many ladies actually read this?). But despite that (or because of it?) Ubel Blatt is a real good piece of work.

In spite of the impression some might have from reading the first few chapters, this is not a cliched "kid sticking it up to the man and teaching his fellows the values of cooperation and friendship" kinda tale. That "Antihero" tag is there for a reason, and one that I will not spoil for those who have yet to read the story. Suffice to say, there is no clear cut "good side" or "bad side" in this tale. There are protagonists and antagonists, yes, but many stereotypically "good" characters work with the antagonists, and the protagonist himself does not always fit the description of what you'd call a "hero".

For me, a good manga must have either an interesting story/background, or interesting characters. Ubel Blatt has both.

As I said before, Koinzell is no typical shounen action hero. He can be, and often will be, exceedingly brutal to his foes, even while acknowledging that his actions may cause more harm than good. On the other hand, he is also not a heartless monster, and he gathers an interesting cast of supporting characters over the course of the manga.

As for the story, it has a fast paced and hectic flow to it. From simple shounen action stock, to the rich background of both the characters and the world itself, and to high strung scenes of betrayal and camaraderie - the mangaka pulls of all of these things with a golden touch. Its especially interesting to see how the relationship of various characters to Koinzell change over the series - former companions turned enemies, former foes becoming allies, etc.

And for those who fear reading "on hold" titles - fear no more! Ubel Blatt is apparently recommencing from February 2011 onwards, and the mangaka plans to have the series go on for another 10 volumes or so! So for those who haven't already given this manga a shot, read up so that you can catch up with the series when it comes back from its long break. 😉

... I guess some people read five chapters and decided they'd read the whole manga. First of all, the number of sex scenes mentioned has been grossly exaggerated by those who commented on it. Compared to berserk, this is much more toned down (and thank gods, the sex scenes bit in Berserk was really getting old). I'd say the ratio of sex scenes is maybe 1 (UB) to 10 (Berserk). And the ones in Berserk were also much more gruesome in nature.

On to the topic - you can obviously compare UB and Berserk. Personally, I loved Berserk initially. And still do, although IMO it has lost its way big time. UB, so far, seems much more focused - Koinzell wants to avenge himself and his three comrades, and that's what he's doing. Gats really had no reasons to save the people he did and slay the monsters he slew. Until his buddy came back from the dead, he had no idea how he might be able to strike back at him. Simple as that.

Koinzell instead knows perfectly who his targets are. I think his appearance makes the manga more interesting, not less. He doesn't look like a brooding dark swordsman physically, but if you READ the manga (don't just look at the pretty pictures boys!), you will see that mentally he is perpetually torn between the futility of it all, the fact he is killing heroes the people look up to... among other things. And as for his origins, we really don't know much (yet). We know what happened before he was slain, but we have no clue why he came back, or even what he truly is so far.

To sum it all up - do Berserk and UB have similar themes? Certainly. Is UB a 'bad copy' of Berserk? Not in my opinion. Is it worth a read? Definitely. The art is good (but then again, this is always very subjective...), and the story is as well. And, picture that, the story actually progresses instead of getting hopelessly lost in secondary adventures.

Not like in Berserk, I am sorry to say.

Great idea but...

The whole idea behind the whole "4 lances of betrayal" and the "7 heroes" is very cool. The art is fun and pretty good. However, the story keeps tripping over itself by throwing in typical anime fetishes like all the lolis and shotas running all around the place. Plus it tries too hard to be "dark" and mature with the random raping or the random sex scenes. I have no problem with nudity or sex or a story that contains rape as long as it serves a purpose beyond just throwing it in there or acting as fan-service for readers. Plus, some of the characters become so ridiculously evil that its a caricature. The author needed an excuse for the main character besides revenge, so all the bad guys end up going crazy with scenes where their raping women or just being abusive just in case the reader wasn't aware that they have it coming. This is just...clumsy. Someone said this was better than Berserk? No its not. Berserk is not perfect mind you, but its story of betrayal is better and harsher than Ubel Blatt. It all comes down to, as another reviewer pointed out, how the story is told. In Ubel Blatt sometimes the story flows, sometimes it glosses over things, more often its choppy with things lacking explanation or weak transitions. Its not awful, but I expected better from all the praise it gets. To me its just average at about a 5.

Don't judge the begining laden with fan service, author was stupid.

If this is your first look at Ubel Blatt and you're unsure as to whether to read it, I recommend that you do. The 200 votes for a 10 is not a lie. This is a captivating story with a variety of characters on opposite sides and good art also—which includes cute female characters. I'm warning you in the beginning the mangaka seemed to tried to get viewers through fan service for whatever reason. There are some ludicrous moments in the beginning but it phases out as the author ushers in a captivating story.

If this is your first perusal at the manga, don't judge it by it's cover picture with an elf. I assure you that not everyone is an angry-looking elf. This manga is one of those fantasy mangas with multiple races. To my knowledge,the sentient ones are elves and humans. The world of Ubel Blatt is set in a medieval-esque world (so that means swords, castles, arrows, ect) but also with magic and fantasy. There are dragons and griffin-like beasts—which can be used as steeds—, magic wielders, and also magic-based technology reminiscent of early modern tech which are blimps and giant-laser-canons-of-doom-that-resembles-a-giant-mounted-serrated-knife. There are at least two empires in the Ubel Blatt world, one with a sinister-looking culture (summoning, employs scary-looking beasts) and the other that is more righteous in appearance (no scary summoning/beasts). Whether or not one is evil is impossible to tell for sure as the story is set in the righteous-looking country. The other country is only referenced when quoting history and as of yet has no connection with the plot except for stuff that happened in the past.

Ubel Blatt is told from the viewpoint of Koinzell who goes against the empire. In the eyes of the people he is evil. However, you'll find that there's some truth behind his goal. It is an adventure so the main character travels with a group of friends. All of them are people who he's helped and are devoted to his cause not b/c of their debt. However, the story does not only center on Koinzell and friends but seems to be branching another viewpoint—which won't be spoiled here. Koizel is still the main lead however.

The main character possesses great powers but so do some other people (officers in the army). This isn't like Dragon Ball Z where there is a huge power disparity. A contingent of troops actually has a chance (depending on the tactic) against an officer. It is, however, a small chance against the more elite.

There's a chance that Ubel Blatt is heading towards a romance. If it does, the romance will remain as a side story along the main quest. I do hope it does however.

You must've been really intrigued to read through all so instead of delaying it, pick up a volume and start reading!

Great, just some minor issues

Personally, it's surprising, since I'm a big shoujo fanatic. I read very few shounen and have barely ever touched a seinen, especially one like Ubel Blatt. However, since I heard good things about it, I decided to give it a try. And jeez, was I ever surprised.

It's not like I don't read shounen or seinen because I don't like the genre, it's just because I haven't been able to find a story that captivates me. Even with shoujo, I hate magical girl and fantasy ones. Why was I drawn to Ubel Blatt? Well, first off, the art is incredible. Second off? There was no second off until I started reading it ^^;;

First off, I wouldn't just dump this series because of all the random sex in the first few chapters of the story. It seriously tones down later on, and it's seinen, so I was kind of expecting lots of blood and meaningless fanservice anyway. However, what really captivates me is the story. I love this antihero thing the mangaka has going on, with society not really understanding anything behind his intentions. The greed, betrayal, I feel such strong hatred and happiness when reading Ubel Blatt. It gives me such mixed emotions as I go through the chapters. I'm simply in love with what's been presented.

Overall I'm extremely impressed with what I've read so far. The only problem I have I guess is the repetition of crying, the baddies literally on the floor pleading for forgiveness every chapter, and the hope that one day Ato will put on some frikking pants...I'm sick of looking at what can't even be classified as underwear or a thong. If you're going to wear armor, wear something decent that can actually PROTECT you, jesus. Oh, and Koinzell is the best!

Great story, great art, a few ecchi-ish nude scenes which I neither hate nor love. I consider them a fan service.

The artist manages to capture every RPG fan's dream. Different races, weapons, magic, skill, fantasy creatures, a party consisting of members each having reasons to join the hero in pursuing his goal (not just randomly joining the main group like in some manga.)

Ubel Blatt might be known to some for its violence but personally I don't think this is the type of violence someone you're likely gonna hear saying: "Gore is cool!!!" would appreciate. PG-15 will do IMO.
It's bloody but not gory. And the blood is more artistic than disgusting.

Don't know how it's gonna end but I'm hoping the mangaka doesn't complicate it too much. So far very worthy of getting a 10 or more. A must read.

My comment on Ubel

Well, I think Its going in a good direction. Ill explain why further down, but first i have to comment on the berserk > Ubel and Ubel > Berserk comments.

People. SHUT THE **** UP! Berserk is berserk. Ubel is Ubel. Its fair to compare things to something better, But saying its a rip-off is just plain wrong. If you wanna see why, Here, ill show you.

Violinist of hamelin is a rip off of berserk because Hamel carries a giant violin that looks like a sword. Oh, he has a little birdy flying with him, like In berserk that guy whos the main character has an elf. And hes going to defeat a big evil! OMG! VIOLINIST OF HAMELIN IS A RIP OFF OF BERSERK! OH NOES!

Now do you see just how stupid your comparisons are? If you don't. Heres a second comparison for you. And someone else used a comparison like this earlier on in the comments, so im gonna use one sorta like it.

"Hey, do you want some white chocolate?" "No, I hate white chocolate." "Why?" "Its like milk chocolate, and i hate rip-offs"

Anyways, Now on to why i like this series. Sure, its more shounen...y than seinen, But personally, for art this clean, i cant see how you could call it seinen. Seinen is generally directed at adults, This is probably shounen like many people said, only sold as seinen so that it makes more sells.... Ya, anyways, back to why i like it

Art : Clean. I like clean art. I hate art thats so hard to see you have to wear magnifying glasses to tell whats going on.

Story: A little cliche, But what isnt now-adays. Its harder to find an original story in anything. And if you wanna get specific, berserk is a rip-off of Mahou shoujo series, since he has a little elf partner helping him. But i digress. The story is mediocre, Not too great, but enough to keep you interested. It makes you wonder, even though you know itll happen, How Koinzell gets his revenge exactly.
Characters : The only character that has been in more than half is koinzell, and everyone else either rarely appears, or sits in the background sucking loli-pops. Which means koinzell is the only one worth mentioning. Sure, Half-elf isnt very original, But this manga pulls it off. This is tad common sense, part spoiler.

Koinzell, Who was ascherit, Was betrayed by his "friends". In response to this, He merged with an elf and became "half" elf, Something that doesnt happen in stories. Most of the time its "My mommies and elf but my dad went to mordor!"

Overall, i give this rating a 7. Its not perfect, but its definitely not mediocre or "Average".... So, ya...... Read it, its good. But some people are obviously not open to stories and will shut it down at the slightest hint of a rip off.

The premise of the manga is really original and an interesting take on the traditional story of heros and villains. Ignoring the random sex scenes, the first chapters up until

glenn dies were great and engaging to read. After the hiatus, the quality of the story and characters plummeted. Before, a certain point, the motivations of the protagonist and antagonists were relatable and almost justified, but as the manga dragged on, the depth of the characters were replaced with shallow shounen stereotypes. The characters are now a shadow of their former selves. As the series progresses, the moral ambiguity at the beginning is forgotten, and a slew of shallow villains that are evil for the sake of being evil appear. This wipes yet another layer of depth the story once had. It's still a story about corruption, but as it is now, the story is only a husk of what it once was. The drawing is also not a strong point and often times, characters can be foreshortened awkwardly when drawn in different angles. The style takes some getting used to and is not for everyone. While not considered aesthetically pleasing in the conventional sense, the drawing is able to convey a good range of emotions which is better than the average shounen manga style, therefore it actually adds to the story at times. Also, the quality of the drawings has stayed pretty consistent, if not improving a bit from the beginning to its current chapters. Before I would give it an 8. At the current chapters, it is no more than a 5. Therefore, I would give it an in-between score of 6.

As a series that has gone through countless ups and downs, Ubel Blatt's current direction is plummeting. The characters have gone haywire, the world they inhabit makes less sense with each passing chapter, and the plot itself has become awful. It's sad to see a series come back from hiatus only to get worse.

In regards to the comparison between Berserk and Ubel Blatt...

There is NO comparison. They are two different series with two different flavors.

Hiatus

This one starts out very ecchi, with a lot of nudity that seems to be just for the sheer sake of having naked girls scampering about the pages. If you can trudge through this, the writing does improve greatly as the rampant nudity gets turned down to almost nonexistence. Koinzell still remains a blatantly overpowered character that can take out almost anyone with little to no difficulty. However just when things start to get interesting as he's finally facing an opponent that has more than a decent shot of taking him out, the manga goes into hiatus on a cliffhanger.

It has been in hiatus now since 2009. While the mangaka apparently does intend to pick it up again, I think our hopes of seeing that happen are going to diminish with each passing year. If you're reading this and having started reading Übel Blatt yet, don't do it. Maybe download the manga and just sit on it while you read other things.
