Starting out well as a harsh revenge "Berserkish title" but now suffers from slow pace, shoneny battles and lack of new ideas.
Getting annoyed by the fact that Konzell is outclassed in battle time and time again, and has to rely on others or the black sword to prevail. For all its seinen elements, the generic main character battles now make this a very shounen series which is a huge let down.

P.S. Berserk is 100 times better. Although the pacing of both series has slowed down, the only advantage Ubel blatt has is that it is released on a more regular schedule.

well i agree that this is indeed different from berserk, and sad to say i find berserk better..i'm not really into lolicon and i find the use of sexuality in this manga a bit tasteless or perverted even..and like what some other people said it is more of a shounenish than a seininish in terms of maturity(well maybe except the sex part). initially the story doesnt have much punch in it or a bit immature, but it gets better along the way...

characters-wise i dont really have a favorite at this moment and i dont think it will change soon, since noone seems likable, and in terms of character dev't, i dont see any, yet..

on the possitive side, the story gets better along the way, the art is quite good, and the action scenes are exciting enough..

Hummm. Started this manga way back in the past, when only the first volume (0) was out, mostly as something found as suggested to be like Berserk. Finally after many years I decided a handful of days ago to read it fully. It was quite good. One thing I agree with some people, that seem to have pointed out, is that the ending is... uhhh... meh? Not that it is reason to not read it., but it left me blinking. It felt more like that the final volume was rushed, if anything. Like there should be at least one more volume, but they were told to bring it to a close in one.

I am very, very, veeery lenient with weak stories and probably I am not one to rate about details, so I can only speak of how I feel about it. It was good. If I did not feel the final volume was rushed, I would probably rate it a 9, but I will rate it 8.

If anything, I want to point out is has absolutely nothing in common with Berserk. I could argue how the concept of the main character getting tricked by others so they could step on their corpses and get power, or how one of the main antagonists might resemble a bit what happens in Berserk... but no. I can't say they are alike just for such small reasons. Some seem to feel they are alike because of the gore and sex, but to me that is like saying Berserk is like Conan the Barbarian. Still, if it is for an itch, it might help, although personally I feel Berserk is a beast on it's own, so I doubt it.

I know I am repeating myself closing this comment, but I feel sad that the last volume felt rushed. It was a.. good read up close to the end, wit the final battle and the conclusion of the story feeling lacking. I recommend anyone that reads it to read at least 2 volumes. If the main character and the story does not make you feel interested, then this is no for you. I say that mostly because I did not feel it got better and better over time, but more like a bit less interesting, but not really. Reminds me of the usual stories where the main character goes around having different adventures by himself of small groups and then after a point it is war with bigger and bigger forces.

PS: To people that praise it over Berserk, it is probably because you are looking for something totally different than Berserk. This does not have the intense power of Berserk, but if I had to point out something better... is that it has eventually ENDED.

Great Art and entertaining characters but falls a bit short of complete awesomeness

Great entertaining manga. Very Powerful, great art and good ending. I liked most of the characters albeit i can't name them all cuz there names are way to damn confusing. I loved the action and the art. Majority of female cast suffer from wearing clothes disease. Despite that there are many strong albeit sexualized female characters in this series. its a great fantasy series and a very rich environment when i think was explored well. Honestly i'd love to see more of the world or a prequel to this manga or something.

I enjoyed it. It had a bit underwhelming final fight honestly but overall was still satisfying. 7/10.

Despite what some the reviews below say, I really enjoy reading this manga. The plot is set up very well, the characters are likable, and artwork is top-notch. I don't think that it's got anything above Berserk quality; but then again Berserk is really just incomparable seeing as it has a fan base that streches back 30 somepin' years ago. On it's own, It's a great manga that has definitely got into my top 10.

It simply has some of the best artwork around the story is all right but people tell me berserk is way better . I have seen some samples of berserk and the art of Blatt is definitely better so I think it has to do with the story ,but this is decent stuff and has great artists working on it.

lol i don't mind the nudity of the characters (even though it's too much for the eyes sometimes) but the art and the story are epic! i have fallen in love with the manga and i just hate waiting for the next series 'cause it takes too long, i get so impatience. but i really really like this one. i'm one of those people who just loves actions and heroic episodes (never mind the blood and stuff--i don't care about that lol), and i love my main character being a humble but strong/powerful hero and Koinzell/Ascheriit is such an addicting character that i don't wanna let go! i can't wait for the next series! it just keeps getting better and better.......thanks, Shiono, for creating this one, you're one of my favorite mangakas! the art is incredible and the story is amazing! you're one of the bests. :->
-i'm one of your #1 fans---so keep doing a great job!!!

p.s. -- i would give it a full 10+ score, but i still need to see how it ends, but then it deserves a much much higher score than that. 🙂

compare to berserk??

I think the comparison with berserk is totaly wrong (whether your blatt-Fan of Berserk-Fan)
because their soo different
i liked the idea of a corrupte empire with a false history and false heroes and plus i liked that in the begining the main char doesn't pretend to be a hero and admit that he selfishly wish for vengeance
what with berserk is over ********* better ??
to tell the truth i started reading berserk long ago and as awed by everything about it but the last arc was such a let down i dropped it
i think berserk is being watered down recently (since the white hawk arc and the witch and isuduro joining the party)

First off, let me start by saying that I am a Beserk fan, a HUGE Beserk fan. The only manga that has ever come close to its dark appeal is Claymore. But I will be the first to say that this manga is NOT a rip off of Beserk. Sure they're from the same genre, but when have we started reading manga based on it being similar or not similar ENOUGH to a particular manga. I mean if we want to talk about similarities, then sure there are some. Both have faeries, both are set during an medieval time period. Both use swords and magic and both of the protagonist were betrayed by people close to them. That's it! But give me a break if that is the reason people are scoring it low, that's a pretty crappy reason. Every work written today, whether good or bad, was inspired by other works! There is no such thing in this day and age as an original idea. There is an such thing as an original "take" on an idea. That being said, who cares if this work was inspired by Beserk in the end Ubel Blatt is Ubel Blatt and Beserk is Beserk.

To the people griping about underage sex. Uh...did any of you bother to read the manga...no really did you? Because if you had, you would know that the kid that your so put off with engaging with older women is NOT a kid at all. He states over and over again, that he has been seeking revenge for 20yrs. Do the math people, if he was first betrayed when he was oh...15 and has been seeking revenge since that time, how old would that make him? Yes, the body he now inhabits is child like...12 to 15 in age, but he is a 30something yr old man people!

Now to my review. The manga isn't the best I've read. It's not as dark as say Claymore or Beserk IMHO but it does alright for the genre. It's definitely not the worst written manga either. It has it share of action and gore. The fight scenes are easily discernible. The art is just above average. There is a element of shota, but "only" because of the leads appearance, not age. The main protagonist is likable. Basically its interesting enough to fill in when your faves haven't been updated.

Likes I said its not the best and not the worst, so I gave the series an 8.

Oh and this would seriously rock as an anime!

I'm rating this without berserk in mind(I couldn't rate it if compared to Berserk anyways. I haven't read Berserk) I like this manga so far. The plot is simple, and I really do like the artwork. It's very good for a Mangaka's first try at this sort of genre. And it's a lot more shounen than seinen so I can read it more easily.
