Tiji-kun!

Description

Hanagasumi Highschool is located right in middle of Kabukichou, Tokyo's #1 red-light district. Because of this, the students are constantly robbed and harassed by yakuza, gangs, etc. In order to ensure the students' safety, the Student Council came up with one solution: befriend the legendary "Tiji-kun", the strongest man in Kabukichō. Two students, Motobu Tomoko and Akazawa Ryo, were assigned the task. But when they find out the true identity of the mysterious "Tiji-kun", having a peaceful school-life turns out to be harder than it seems.

Abrupt ending -- Still recommend

(Before you ask, this is meant as a NON-SPOILER post for those who are not sure if they want to read or not & to see my opinion and recommendations)

Yea, we get it. It got cancelled and had to cut short. However, it managed to do what it wanted from the start. I will admit by the end, it got cliche and it's most likely because it had to end short.

So the story is straight forward, about a kid who is a typical teenager in high school (and naive) and has a secret, where he is the town's biggest and strongest fighter. Premises is set, there's no bullshit in between. I think what makes this more enjoyable is the first 10 chapters, where we are introduced to his motives and why he does this. It's certainly interesting, and it makes you want to read more.
With that in mind, it's also its biggest downfall. His entire motive is because of these events that occurred, and every action he takes will be explained "it's because x y and z happened" again and again. I'll admit, it did annoy me a bit but it wasn't enough to make me drop it.

So, moving into the last 2 chapters, all the sudden things go from half-way point of the story to full-blown end. We're introduced to characters in a matter of pages, and it's just too much information to take, and lets not forget that it becomes way too cliche. To be fair, it was cancelled so I understand the rush.

Finally, this leaves me at a 7.5/10. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it didn't pan itself out too well. If the manga would have continued, the same formula of every fight would have been used (especially since it was used way too many times here). The ending scene was unrewarding, and it left you off with "Yea, you know what you just read? It's going to continue happening but we won't cover it". (I left out character development since there wasn't really any. One can argue the MC's development through every fight is worth mentioning, but the ending makes it impossible to not be biased).

A quick comment, I do wonder what would have happened if they had continued...

I mean, we're told that Tiji's sensei was related to the girl. I think that itself would have been a good arc. Lets not even mention that the guy who challenged Tiji in the end could have been more developed... Oh jeez I hate having to come up with "what-ifs" scenarios...

Not saying it was bad, but pls never try to label this as realistic. The only realistic parts of this is using your center of gravity and leverage to cause more damage(basics of most martial arts) and weak points of the human body like the tip of the chin.

Other than that. Loved the manga, hate the ending..... stop screwing over ever good series to be.. still holding a grudge over double arts and a few others. I didn't need yet another manga on my "reasons to use extreme violence on publishers" list >:[.[/quote] That's so true loved some many mangas like this and double arts it saddens me that never get to continue. His points are viable. This manga has a setting where things like chi/energy don't come into play so the breaker is out. Only holyland is left as comparison, and the lead never got anywhere near the level of tiji, nor did he have such a speedy growth. Even as a genius he had to focus on one skill at a time, and practice most of them repeatedly over a week or two before practical use.... even then some failed due to timing in reality as opposed to his solo training. Super Abrupt Ending

Too bad this manga got cancelled. I could see the pace really quickening near the end. Long story short, there was a lot of lead up but the resolution failed. For example you try to find out who his sensei is and then you find out just in passing. There is a love relationship that develops but goes nowhere. The fight with the gangs have no real climatic ending... it just happens.

Good manga to read in ~30 mins or so. If the mangaka had more time to develop then it would have been a good manga, but not as this stands.

He practiced for ten years, bro. 10 years.... In Holy-Land, he starts out weak n becomes strong in just how many years? Have ya read Kenichi:Strongest Discipline, The breaker or any manga out there? 10 years was enough. 10 years are enough.

Also, He had experience of fighting. He was already Feared by people when manga started. No one becomes famous by single fight. Every second delinquent knew his name, so he must have fought at-least dozens times.

I wont give it 10, even 9 or 8. cuz it has many flaws but yea last part... About smashing truck...

may be If we believe that our Hero can crack walls n floor, then THAT SUMO wrestler could easily do that to truck.

About Manga, u can give it a chance, its not that BAD! (its short anyway)

Irrealistic

Some people said that it's similar to Holyland, it's not true, holyland is better: it has character development, realistic fights and a credibility that this one lacks. Tiji kun is based on the bullshit concept that traditional martial arts that don't include full contact practice are somehow better than martial art that are actually worth something, like Muay thai. I hate to break it for you, but practicing alone for years won't make you some sort of superhero. For being capable in a match you need to have fight experience, not some fancy technique. And WTF with the truck scene in one of the last chapters? Wasn't it supposed to be a realistic manga?

Why I wait to rate

So many people said this was good but none of them finished the manga before rating. This manga did start out good and maybe it had potential to be better than holy land, but this fell through like a ton of bricks. I understand that is was canceled so they didn't get to do what they wanted, but it was canceled obviously because it wasn't doing good. Holy land was much better, it was realistic in-depth and the main character was reasonable. Yes he was a crybaby but that's what made him someone to be praised, he didn't start out strong, he worked for it.

In Tiji-kun though we have some kid who practiced one move for 10 years, kudos for that, but apparently that one move trumps everything anyone can do. It'd be different if he just practiced punching, but instead it was a specialized punch and the skills used for it had a limited synergy with other things, but somehow that's all he needed.

All and all this was actually horrible for a fighting manga, because it wasn't a fighting manga. It was simply a buff for Okinawan Ti and more like Rock-Paper-Scissors-Nuke.

*The premise is exactly like Holyland... but I think this is better because the main character isn't some emo little crybaby who walks around looking like a wounded pup all the time. Having read Holyland I'd say that I prefer this manga. One, the art is way better. Two, the main character is cooler.

On the other hand, there are lots of explanations of techniques and moves, etc etc... so it can be a bit boring. Like reading a fighting manual. That is just like Holyland*

The premise is exactly like Holyland... but I think this is better because the main character isn't some emo little crybaby who walks around looking like a wounded pup all the time. Having read Holyland I'd say that I prefer this manga. One, the art is way better. Two, the main character is cooler.

On the other hand, there are lots of explanations of techniques and moves, etc etc... so it can be a bit boring. Like reading a fighting manual. That is just like Holyland.

Most of the big and little twists are fresh enough to weigh up the feeling of something-is-missing, so that under the line, I say it's worth it. That feeling probably stems from me reading a lot of shounen and battle mangas, so I just got too used to certain characteristics of them... Gamaran definitely has that something, and both of these share the strong main figure. Still, this one is more interesting than Gamaran, so I don't really get what might be missing. 8/10
What ever, I'm tired so I cut this short, I said what I wanted to say right in the first sentence anyway. 😀
Nothing spectacular up to chapter 7 yet, tho. I'm looking forward to a nice story within the next few volumes. 🙂

Also, is chapter 7 really still in the first volume? If not, then please correct the info.^^
