That ending...
by Kevadu

I've been reading manga for 15 years and I've seen a lot of rushed, unsatisfying endings. It's unfortunately something that happens a lot in a serialized medium. When an author gets word that their series is getting cut they don't necessarily have time to tie everything up at the end. Even so, I was amazed by how phenomenally bad the execution here was.

After 23 volumes we are left with an ending that resolves nothing and explains nothing. Heck, one of the titular characters was basically written out of the story towards the end, without any justification. The idiotic and contrived twist in the epilogue did not help. Some new characters were introduced in the final arc and then weren't around long enough to actually do anything...what was the point of introducing them? Maybe that time could have been spent not completely neglecting the main characters, hmm?

It was a fun decent series with one of the worst endings I've ever read. And that just leaves a bad taste in the mouth...

The end.

If you can stomach Hana's personality and enjoy comedy / school life series, this will be a fairly enjoyable read. However...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's one thing to decide not to reveal almost anything about one of the two main characters, but that ending. This is the first I've ever had a mind = blown experience because of a series' ending. There's a bad feeling I had about 20-30 chapters before the ending, but not only was Hana's past apart from being a deliquent left completely untouched, she disappeared and reappeared without much explanation.

In a nutshell, good series, ending should never be read by anyone. "Bad" doesn't even get close to describing it.

I can't count the number of times this manga caused me to laugh at loud in public when i read it (which caused me to get quite a lot of dirty looks). This is a memorable and unique manga because of it's purely funny. They don't use awkward ecchi scenes to make it funny, which scores big points with me. I can't wait for more!!!

Now, let see, i'm your typical old school otaku here. So, as you can predict, i have seen a lot of manga , whether its shoujo, shonen, or seinen manga. I have seen most of them, there's many junior high / high school theme out there. However, not many can makes me addicted like this one.
First i though its just another endless gag manga whose timeline seemly endless forever, or the character is just having stagnant personality, and just spew some random joke allover again.

No, you guys are really wrong, it started slow, but if you follow it closely, its just just more than your usual comedy manga out there. We can see on how a delinquent having personality change step by step to from irresponsible brat, till they become matured and responsible person as the time goes by from first semester till their third year, in a really hilarious yet exciting way. As the story goes by , we got introduced by a lot new character that will enrich the story plot. There's a lot of oldschool fighting scene too, which i really liked it and its really gave me 80s feeling.
Last but not least, there's a romance too in this manga, however i like the way the mangaka deliver its story, so its not seems like another sappy romance drama moment allover again. Instead, romance in the straight yet funny way(and not in overly sensitive way that makes me puke if you know what i mean). To sum it up: kickass fighting + comedy =90% , romance 10%.

I even ditched my homework and videogames for a little while just to marathon read this manga.
Shinagawa (the main character) by far is one of my favorite all time manga character.
Just read this awesome manga, i guarantee 100% you are not regretting it.

The story is quite refreshing and the characters have great chemistry together. And the jokes are really great too. Once it gets you going in its pace, it's really hard to put down. More scanslation please! =)

Hilarious series with plenty of action

My rating is based mainly on the actual manga volumes that I own. I love this manga; the plot never gets stale and the mangaka never seems to run out of humorous scenarios. So far, I've gotten 7 of the 8 volumes published and my favorite character is Izumi.

Regarding the scanlations (in particular, Mahou-X's): Once I found out that one of my favorite series was being scanlated (finally!), I was excited at first. I have friends who can't read Japanese and I didn't have to free time to translate it for them.

EDIT: I originally complained over the first Mahou-X scanlations replacing the names of the two main characters with the title names. Since my original post I've been notified that Mahou-X is using the characters' real names as they are in the original manga. I checked out their latest scanlation (chapter 7) and overall, it looks great. There's just one spot where Yankee-kun is used instead of Shinagawa-kun on page 69, but it's a huge improvement and doesn't really bother me that much. Aside from that little thing, chapter 7's really come out great. Keep up the good work, Mahou-X! I can't wait for more chapters to send to my buddies and enjoy. smile

Entertaining and disappointing at the same time

This series would have been one of my all-time favorites. I remember reading it as it was being translated and enjoying the humor and the growth of all the characters. It evoked a lot of good feelings and I found myself rooting for everyone. But at the same time, as the series continued, it started to feel like it was being drawn out and I realized that the titular Megane-chan stagnated as a character to the point of irrelevance. Never before have I read a manga where one of the supposed main characters becomes a joke that's more of an obstacle to the rest of the story than anything else. Adachi Hana never grew from being a cheap gag and in the end it seems like she never belonged in the story at all, to the point that

she gets removed from the final chapters
, with no effort to give her a true backstory. It really cheapened the struggle of the male protagonist whose romantic subplot got tragically side-lined. It really spoils all the character growth that he displayed over the course of the series and feels like the author scrapped any romantic development that the series could have had, aside from a few side-characters who get a passing mention at the end.

If I were to recommend this series, it could be on the strengths of its male protagonist alone. Shinagawa Daichi was the real star, and you get to see him grow a lot during the course of the story, although mostly everyone else gets an honorary mention as they all are quite likeable and sympathetic.

Good build up, terrible end

I really enjoyed this series, read it multiple times over the years as it was being published. But the ending was atrocious. Sure, sometimes you might not like an ending but in this case a) I dont see how anybody could like it and b) its unclear if there really was an ending. One of the two main characters gets written out of the series with no explanation and then (possibly) reappears on the last page (as she hasnt aged its unclear if it isnt just Shiagawa daydreaming) for no real reason either. It was a nonsensical mess.

Horrible ending.

Good series, drug on forever, then rushed to a completely unsatisfying end. Wish they hadn't drug it out so much and actually spent time giving a decent end. There are some historically bad endings to decent manga, but this has to be in the top 10 somewhere imo.

Push through!

I had tried to read this 4 times, but I couldn't get pass 10-15 chapters. I decided to push through it and I'm glad I did. I can honestly say that this is the only manga that has gotten me to laugh out load every chapter. This manga is near perfect. After the rocky start there is a consistent level of quality. There really isn't a chapter I dislike (except for the first couple). Although I wish there was more development in the relationships though, in these arcs it's as if they forget about relationships. Man I wish school was really like this.
