.. but I didn't enjoy it.

It's one of those mangas that dealt with the theme of relationships in a generally mature way (there were no villains or heroes and the characters were complex) but I never warmed to it. Sumire was just weak IMO. Despite being a successful career woman she could never voice her emotions or be her real self even though she was contemplating a lifelong commitment to Hasumi. And her inactive passivity meant she was just stringing along all the other characters' development and progress. "Momo" as a male lead was slightly distasteful. His attitude towards other woman was manipulative although his saving grace was he doted on Sumire. The relationship between them was initally comedic but the master/pet relationship was borderline creepy at times. I never really understood what motivated these characters into this wierd psychological behaviour.

The art was scruffy, disorganised and scratchy, and I wasn't drawn into it; it was a waste of a visual medium which could've been used more eloquently to convey emotions and plot in order to draw the reader in. I've seen better art in other manga. Towards the end the story just meandered with unnecessary subplots and I got bored.

So generally;

1) Too long
2) Flat, slightly unsympathetic characters
3) Boring towards the end
4) Poor art

Read if you're killing time...or wondering how this manga won an award. I think its like one of those oscar-winning films that you'd rather catch on DVD to see what the fuss was about.

I was really hesitant in reading this manga when searching for a manga to read during my holidays. But surprise, it was actually pretty good. Probably one of the best josei manga I've read in a while. I particularly like the last chapter, it was sooo cute!

Probably one of the problems with this manga is that it was too long. I think about half way throught the manga everything just gets soo dull (that is if read it continuously) that you don't even have to read the text and you can get what's going on. But the ending kind of made the whole series worth reading. lol

I don't normally like josei (I like more bloody, gory stuff), but this has that cute charm to it that sets it apart from others. You really were almost left guessing until the end, with a great plot and characters with actual depth to them. Sure, Sumire and Momo's "pet-master" relationship is found pretty much nowhere in modern society, but it is the only unrealistic thing about the whole series, really. The only problem I have is that the mangaka really stretched the plot out as much as possible, adding unnecessary obstacles and side stories to an otherwise well constructed plot.

It's cute, clever, original, and one of the best manga I've read all year.

Best manga I've read in ages! The flow of the story is very natural and smooth, the characters are very lovable and overall, it's just one amazing story that can be enjoyed no matter what's your genre of preference because it has something for everyone. This mangaka has greatly impressed me.

I was looking for a manga with a strong but secretly insecure female lead, and this is it! It's awesome. The romance development is just right, and the bittersweet scenes are played out so beautifully. It's no wonder this manga gets so much attention and gets recommended frequently. Must-read!

I was a little wary about reading this one so i had it on my waiting list for years....then off chance [should have been writing my term paper] i picked it up....and i was hooked...i fell hard for the story...it was funny and sweet...worth the read...Sumire was lethal at some parts...and Momo was like a leash kid in a candy store, he sees the candy and wants to start pigging out, but Mama happens to have a firm grip on the leash... even the side characters were really well developed and cool (dumb word)...I want more but...then again no i don't...it ended just like it was meant to...now i'm debating on whether i wanna go sniff out the drama...[depends on what grade i want on my Term Paper...] but all in all a good read....
Spoiler (highlight to view)
could not stop laughing when Sumire went to meet Takeshi's (Momo) sisters and she went through the whole "take care of me" speech only to realize she was still wearing slippers from the hotel...well the look on her face was priceless...and she fainted about five times...and i wonder what Yuri's husband looked like...and at least her ex...What's his face got a somewhat happy ending to...he hooked up with his pet too...and their son is a cutie...but "Sakura"...really, i get how Sumire meant violet...but come on!

This manga is wonderful.

It shows how relationships can break and nobody is really at fault.
It shows how people mask their own personality in front of other people to look better in front of them.
It shows that pets never get shown masks but always the true self of a person.

Of course to come to that result you need to read a lot of volumes, about 12-13. The development to that point is slow and added with side stories of other characters that don't necessarily are part of this path. Volume 14 shows how it progresses in the future for most of the involved people. So this manga is not a long dragged story with everything resolved in the last 2 chapters.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The main character is the female reporter Sumire. She finds a runaway boy in a box outside of her apartment. She wouldn't allow a stranger living with her unless it's a harmless pet. And thus the boy Takashi becomes Momo, the dog.
Having a human pet may sound pretty silly but the story is not silly at all. And all dirty minded will be disappointed.

Sumire shows a strong, strict and tough image of herself to the outside. She's top in her job and does everything very professional. That also gives her a unapproachable appearance among her colleagues.

Hasumi (male role #2), an upperclassman from old college days, has always been interested in her and vice versa. So it doesn't take long until both start dating. And he's a cool dude too - wish his side was better shown and presented.

Sumire wants to keep up her perfect image and restrains herself from showing her weaknesses and flaws to him. That works well and he falls more and more for her.

That brings trouble to her inner balance.
In secret she smokes, plays video games and can become all teary suddenly. Those are the sides that Momo does know very well. As the understanding petdog it's his task to listen and comfort.

However, Momo soon will have troubles too because he slowly falls for her. But since he also respects Hasumi and because of certain other circumstances he keeps that to himself.

So who will get her at the end? ^^

I don't know whether Sumire actually realized at the end that her own forced image in front of her boyfriend Hasumi was the reason that gave this relationship no chance from the beginning. The bond between the two would be much stronger otherwise, just like to Momo/Takeshi.

Takeshi on the other hand, as in the petrole, was presented her very self right from the beginning and thus had already an advantage over any other man.

The ironical thing is that Hasumi actually still had a clumsy and naive girl image of her in his mind. Taking that he surely wouldn't mind the faults she desperately tried to hide from him and wouldn't just still love her, he'd love her even more knowing all about her. After all she is a lovable person.
Those two would be a great couple if just Sumire hadn't hidden half of her personality.

That's the arching thing about this story.
Such chances that get missed because you stand yourself in the way happen often in real life. Sad, isnt it?
Also in a relationship you want to be accepted as your very self, but then you actually should show it.

It's the message of the manga, at least that's what I took from it.

Be yourself.

So why did I rate it 8? Well it's the length. 7 volumes would be enough, but all those extra chars and stories weren't necessary and just dragged it out. I was dieing to know what will happen between Momo and Sumire and didn't want to know about her colleagues at all.
However, now I'm sad that it's over and I won't read anything new about the people there. Well except for Takeshi's cameo appearance in Kiss & Never Cry.

Sumire's bigger sister, who never shows emotions on her face, surely would deserve a manga for herself, seems pretty interesting. LOL.

- realistic characters
- adorable story
- well developed, well planed characters and plot
- multi-dimensional issues consist of romance, work, gender, friendship, decision making, family, age (and pet?)
- enjoyable comedy (why did the mangaka name one of her main charater Gouda Takeshi?? it's hilariously funny)

a perfect josei!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
i do really hate the idea of cheating.. but what happen to Hasumi-sempai is somehow understandable. (And i do really happy for the plot, it opens way for sumire x momo :)) As for shiori, i don't like this bitchy-slutty woman at first, but in the end i kinda sympathize her, this woman is only miserably looking for love she's never got before in her chaotic life and family, and i do think she really loves Hasumi from deep down her heart. I think Sumire's got more, there's nothing to lose if she release others. And hasumi too, already has (at least more) perfect life (than shiori). There's nothing wrong if he shares his happiness to other who need it. The concept of mutual need, giving and sharing when you have more and lack any, are what i like about this manga.

I've posted up many comments about manga's and they are usually pretty bad, I guess I have my own reading standards or just that I found this AWESOME masterpiece that I had compared to everything I read these days which may be unfair. But, Kimi wa pet got an average from me, the manga is lovely I love this type of contemporary modern manga art I simply love it. And I really love the female dominance and the character of Sumire the Ice beauty who strives to keep up her image. Kimi wa pet is a sweet sort of comedy but unfortunately I didn't get to finish it because I thought it wasn't worth reading till the end, I stopped reading it at volume 5. But this is just my opinion alone, for those who actually liked it good for you.

love, shojofrik x
