Nanoka no Kare

Description

When Nanoka was in middle school, she got her first confession. Feeling that the boy really liked her, she started dating him. Only to find out later that he only used her to show off in front of his friends. Betrayed, Nanoka is now in high school and hesitates to get into another relationship. A chance encounter with a stranger’s breakup in a fast food restaurant soon changes her mind. Both she and the stranger were betrayed in their first relationships... And this brings up a different feeling in her heart. After seeing the stranger again in the streets, she makes her first confession to him. Only to find out that they are from two different worlds.

Nope goodbye outta here see ya. I've been on one too many dramatic rodeos and I'm jumping off this horse.

Like everyone else has said, the first 8 chapters were lovely and refreshing. Such nice sweet characters who had the maturity and hearts of saints. But then I read to chapter 11 (the beginning of the end). I tried to reassure myself things were going to be okay by reading these reviews, but I was shockingly wrong.. Because several reviews have all said the exact same thing about its overly dramatized spiral of misunderstandings, reading 50 more chapters to see it for myself would only drown me in my own tears. Very sad that I can't bring myself to read anymore of this, I saw a lot of potential.

Save yourself, jump ship or don't board at all.

Getting Annoying

Started out nicely.
Nanoka and Hayata are cute together.
But Nanoka is always flash-backing about her old boyfriend every few pages. She thinks more about her old relationship than her new one.
Hayata obliviously picks up on this through Nanoka's expressions and body language and eventually learns the truth little by little.
Frankly speaking Nanoka is no good for Hayata as she cannot focus on him and keeps hurting him emotionally.
What irks me the most is public opinion, i.e. Hayata is boring coz he is not a seductive playboy and Takato is exciting.
Besides the early chapters this manga has been a train wreck to so far from the RAWS,

I scoffed at the synopsis until a friend talked about really liking Takato, so I picked it up.
The story isn't good. It's full of not-so-well pulled off cliches, and in the end the main plot, like always, is based on a misunderstanding that could be easily resolved by an explanation, but isn't (or I guess not until the end? Manga's still ongoing) The writing isn't good (mostly, there are some good parts), but they do explore areas that aren't often done. (i.e. older female highschooler x middle schooler guy, they both have exes, etc, but the thing about asking him out before even getting to know him, just because "he isn't like other guys" as if he's the only one who would think/do such things, is completely ridiculous. It's no different from a guy making a girl and exception because "she's not like other girls" yeah no)
Takato is an interesting character, albeit a horrible person. I forgave him more easily around c30 or so. His character development is rather decent. His parts were more interesting to read, but he can say some extremely aggravating things before

he realizes how wrong he was. He still needs to apologize. He's not Fuwa Shou. He can't get away with forcing a kiss on a girl in such a creepy way and without apologizing. .
Nanoka's gorgeous, can be strong (emotionally) and not so much at times, but she tries her best. She fixes most of her communication/personality problems quickly in the beginning, which weren't much to begin with. I can't say she develops that much as a character, rather than that her circumstances changed. She has no real flaws, and if someone called her a Mary Sue, I'd have a difficult time arguing that. Still, for most of the series, I liked her best out of all the characters. Which isn't saying much, because all the characters were rather weak (as in not very well-constructed). Her denseness can be irritating at times, as well. By the way, clumsy girls aren't as cute as people think they are. Speak to my legs covered in scars and bruises. Falling three times on the way to the airport, having a suitcase fall down a long flight of stairs, and then getting a black eye from accidentally socking yourself in the cheek with the seat arm--all in one day? It's not fun, and definitely not pretty. :T
Hayata has some great expressions (and some not-so-great, but that's only because some of those remind me of Makoto, which pisses me off)--he's rather too perfect? I mean yeah, he has some flaws, but no real flaws. He's great, but let's face it--he's boring. We look at his dazzling expression, get entranced, and then 10 minutes later we forget about him. That's the sort of character he is. ! Well, it was obvious he was endgame from the beginning. The way his jealousy was played out was cliche and tiresome.
Kensuke is too convenient of a character. It's obvious and distracting.

I have to say, though, that this manga did manage to catch me off guard at times. There were moments I actually did not expect, that were technically still cliche, but cliche with a spin. Those parts, which were usually Takato's, were the most interesting to me.

Was it worth the read? Ehh. It's ok. I wouldn't read it unless you're bored and have nothing better to do. Also, if you like the legit nice guys. This wasn't for me, since I usually prefer darker relationship dynamics. At the very least, the endgame so far is being done a lot better than Hirunaka no Ryuusei did theirs.

It started out very normal, nothing trite, but nothing extraordinary. But suddenly it became more slice of life (which I generally loathe, I have no patience for rambling monologues) about how a young girl can let one event take over her whole life and relationships with others. I was really enjoying the direction and enjoyed the little twist at the end even more. I'm definitely looking forward to this title being explored both from a SOL perspective, as well as a romantic angle. Hope the pacing doesn't get messed up with the mangaka trying to resolve it all in one short volume.
Art's nice, nothing to make your heart race, but good looking enough to keep you interested. Characters are multilayered and the storytelling mature.

Edit (after reading chapter 3): Pace is very stable and interesting, but why aren't things HAPPENING, instead of the same struggle being dragged out endlessly.

I only read one chapter, since that's the only one scanlated, but from what I can gather, this seems to be an interesting read. The girl, is well typical and all, but her "typical", melancholic, high school love/friendship problems, are somewhat touching, as well as being realistic in a sense. I guess that is expected from the manga-ka (I think) that did Akuma to Love Song.

Edit: Like many other commentors, this went in a downward spiral. Such a shame too, could have made a great character-development based slice of life with lovely art 🙁

Started off well but then messed up

This manga started off with soo much potential, and it failed. The drama with the apparent love triangle doesn’t need to happen since it’s causing the story not to go anywhere.
To be honest, I first started this series thinking that this would be a romance between Nanoka and Hayato who grow through their teenage problems that are about other things besides romance drama. After chapter 11, I had my doubts and skipped all the way to chapter 35. There, the unnecessary drama with the love triangle didn’t get any better and got worse.

I wish this series took a different path since it started off so well. And it looks like, according to the other reviewers, the story doesn’t get better at the end.

So if you don’t mind a series that starts off good but then messes up by focusing on an unnecessary love triangle, then by all means, Ignore me and enjoy yourself. However, if you are looking for a romance shoujo with a better plot, skip this one because it ain’t it—unfortunately.

Nanoka is really making Hayato go through all this unnecessary drama. She should just talk to him.

Like all other comments overdramatic, only reason I'm reading it is for wangst and to see how ridiculous it gets. Let's see, overblown misunderstandings, amnesia...what's next, terminal illness?

If it ends the manga faster, I'm all for it. Don't count on this to be the next R and J.

Starts good, but becomes just another shoujo cliche very fast

It starts out really good! The main heroin speaks her mind and isn't some helpless shivering puppy that needs help all the time. The main guy isn't some jerk, and is really nice and mature even though he is younger.

But then, surprise surprise, the main heroin's ex appears, is really handsome (of course /s) and forces a kiss on her. This is cliche, but still acceptable.

Now, the reason the main guy broke up with his previous girlfriend is because she was cheating on him. Naturally, what do we do if someone harasses us and our partner is sensitive to infidelity-related things? We keep it a secret from him, of course. (/s)

From there on out, the ex, who is obsessed with her, keeps popping up at all the right moments, when she then finally is together with her boyfriend, she keeps comparing everything to her ex.

In the end it's another cliche shoujo manga where a lot of needless and stupid drama is created because the characters are not able to open their mouth and talk. The obviously never heard of a thing called communication in a relationship.

It's still one of the better cliche shoujo manga out there. If this is your thing, you'll like this one.

The manga still had a lot of potential, but with every chapter that comes out in the wrong direction, this potential decreases, and right now I'm not sure if it is still able to become something more than a cliche.

Note: this review is up to chapter 52. If I read the rest, I'll update the review accordingly.
(Sorry for the rant, I'm just frustrated, because the first 8 chapters or so where really good)

I've should had read the reviews first. This is giving anxiety, and not in the good way. So much negativity and it just keeps snowballing faster than the reader can mentally catch up. I should had stopped earlier on. Better late than never, I'm dropping this series.

i could tell this manga was about to get really annoying with your typical crybaby, can't-do-anything by herself female lead so i stopped myself from getting a major headache then came here and read all these reviews that basically just proved i saved myself..LOL
