Tokyo Ghoul is an amazingly well told story. In a twisted world where ghouls ( humanoid human flesh eating creature) live amongst the human, Kaneki find his life turned upside down by a cetain incident that turned him from human to ghoul. The author successsfully depict the anxiety, fear, and despair that Kaneki experience as he struggled to stay human despite of his changed state. And as he learn about the life of ghouls, he is eventually dragged to the elongated fights of ghouls against their own kind and the doves, humans who fights ghouls.

Tokyo Ghoul started slow as Kaneki learn his way to live as ghoul but the pace will fasten as the fights began. In the anime you will learn little about ghouls and their abilities so reading the manga won't be a waste of time.

To me , this series is great because of its natural flow.

The author successfully depicts Kaneki's struggles wih his new life as ghoul:how he struggle to restrain his ghoulself, how he wish to protect his ghoul companions, how he finally accept his ghoul part and strive to get stronger to protect his companions. Through the story we feel like we want to cheer for him and pity him for everythong that happen to him. Other chars are also well developed, ghouls and dove alike. They make you feel you want to cheer for both sides as you have favs on both sides.

The balance of power between ccg and ghouls are great, while humans have disadvantge in term of raw strength it's well covered by increasingly better equipments and strategy. Both investigators and ghouls have badass figures, one that won't fall easily even against stronger adversary. Also, kaneki despite of his constant growth was never overpowered. Part of this is maybe because he stil fear he power that will make him lost himself.

Also Tokyo Ghoul has seemingly deep plot involving secret orgs and a (mad) scientist who is obssessed in turning human to ghouls. The ccg is also not free of controversy, and there seems to be bigger mistery to the world as why ghoul could exist and why they have very similar appearance to human.

Overall this series is great. Don't worry about the ending, it doesn't seems to be the ending of the series to me, although I did somehow discouraged about it for some reasons. Don't get me wrong. Even at it's end I found myself still hungry for more chapters of TG and the story has definitely ways to go on. Those who said its bad are like people who stopped watching a series after its first season and said it has bad ending.

The sequel has begun its serialization so for you who was put down by the ending or after learnt the ending, cheer up. It may start slow but it will definitely get better. This series is great and it has potentials to be even greater.

Do not listen to those who said the ending sucked or that it was rushed. It wasn't. After starting the sequel I felt that Tokyo Ghoul was meant to be a large prologue to a even larger story, I do hope I'm right. Ishida Sui pours tons of information in each chapter, something to be amazed at considering how many pages each has. The last couple chapters, more precisely the last one gives you a lot to think about and answers almost nothing, it just hints of what it's yet to come, basically proving that ending where it ended was Ishida's plan from the start.

Tokyo Ghoul never ceased to impress me, it has incredible character and plot development in every single chapter, no exceptions, even the characters who disappear for chapters on end come back with such force you feel like they never even left. Ishida does a remarkable job with the main character, it's hard not to feel bad for him, after all he clearly states that his story is a tragedy in the first chapter. You'll feel torn, should you hate the ghouls or the humans? Who's worse? The world is indeed wrong, but who's the cause of it? Ghouls whose only way of survival is to eat human flesh, some kill and some don't, some just kill because they feel pleasure, but even for just existing they're hated and hunted. Or the humans, whose fear of being bellow someone in the food chain hunt the ones above them and forget they're also monsters. It's hard not to relate with both sides. Even the characters you hate are too interesting to be ignored, you'll want them dead but you'll love to have them alive. Ishida art is beyond stunning, from the detailed landscape to the distinctive characters designs. Ishida loves symbolism and hidden messages, he does great use of numbers (western and roman numerals), pay attention to them, they are references to Tarot cards, he seems to love those, but not only numbers, he also uses words or images, such as flowers or references to myths or mythological creatures, the texts are also filled with symbolism, like the use of poems and famous literary works. My only problem is the difficulty to understand what's happening in some action scenes, in between frames are necessary in some, but this doesn't affect the story or the art, so don't worry.

Well, like I said, nothing short of amazing, it draws you in and it doesn't let you get out, just like Kaneki being unable to free himself from what happened to him, if you don't prepare yourself and put up a wall you'll probably be dragged down until the end.

Please do ignore the comments saying how the ending sucks and what not . Be aware that THERE IS A SEQUEL. Just as dreamer00013 has stated, Ishida has most likely planned the whole thing out and everything he does has a reason to it.

To those contemplating whether they should read it or not, I would definitely recommend this one. The characters (& development ) are great and you will absolutely fall in love with them . As well as the hidden messages, symbols and metaphors are really interesting.

Tokyo ghoul has been rising in popularity as it has already 2 anime seasons, art conventions, cafes, soon to have a musical and manga sales have been doing extremely well . etctecetc since it is obviously successful, i hope you all give it a shot !

Easily becomes one of my top favorites manga. I havent find something this great that can satisfy me recently until i read tokyo ghoul. I picked this up because the cover looked interesting to me and it has been completely scanlated. Turned out I really love the story and the characters. And the art was very good too. There are struggle, hate, love, sadness, happiness for each person. No right or wrong side in the battle between human and ghouls, just every one of them trying to protect what's important for them. I was disatissfied with the ending.. Before i realized there is a sequel! Tokyo Ghoul is really amazing, the name of Ishida Sui has been engraved on my mind. One of few talented mangaka that able to deliver a captivating story.

Dammit. I went into this manga knowing it was horror/tragedy (aka LOTS OF DEATHS) and yet I managed to let down my guards by the first chapter...

This manga was really good, and honestly, the poor main character needs a break. His life sucks. I cry so much for him.

BUT GAHD I NEED MORE! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS DANG IT! <-- binged read this and now i have withdrawal symptoms.

Tokyo Ghoul begins and ends with Ken Kaneki. There are countless of intriguing subplots & characters with distinctive motives all in the backdrop of a macabre urban Tokyo. But at the end what lies at the heart of the story is its protagonist. We come to know about Kaneki, learn to like him and understand his struggle. This is a journey that details a young man entering a world previously unaware to him and trying to deal with his new reality.

The whole plot was more than enough to keep me reading. Having to wait for the next chapter to be released left questions hanging heavy in the air thanks to all the cliffhangers that seemed to never end. The last chapter being announced definitely brought me to tears even before I read it though. However I'm really happy that the sequel is out.

The series is firstly very good, employs a unique art style, has characters one can get behind and a steadily developing world. I also find the handling of gore (a bit like a french album) and minimal nudity interesting.
Tons of messed up but always justified acts of violence happen to everyone (none are safe) but here is the kicker.
The actual "gore" aspect is just out frame most of the time but instead we get to see detailed and agony filled close-ups of the victims and perpetrators faces or reaction shots from onlookers. Ah so many feels.
I may love justified gore as much as any true seinen connoisseur to clarify but restrain is a lost art and Sui knows that language well. Best of all nearly everything has lasting consequences from deaths that stick to lasting darkness just under the smiles of the leads. There is further a lot of grey morality going on and the villains and anti-heroes all feel justified in their own way. A bit like the classic 10/10 Akira. The narrative itself starts of with a bang but settles down in a decent for a lack of words "shonen"grove (the series first small flaw) but then something Big happens around the middle, the series then gets a slight kick in the pants and kicks into high gear. I am not talking about an increase of action scenes by the way. A bit like Attack on Titan (8/10).
Not much time is wasted thereafter and now to the second and final flaw. Most heroic characters are a bit too innocent or "clean" for lack of a better term to fit into their world or even ours. I don´t need a sex + drugs orgy by any means but it would be nice if the all the rather cute shipping would lead to more then longing stares for example.
So no real flaws at all and my rating could go up a bit if the story stays strong. By that i meat the fact that RE isn´t a standalone sequel and more like a volume 15 (just like the pointless US-comics renumbering) but the short spin-off Jack is sadly a skip worth 5/10 mess. The same applies to the sadly rushed and changed anime adaptation.
The happier parts of the manga remind me of Angel Densetsu (10/10), the action scenes and restraint of the highly heroic Claymore (8,5/10), the darker parts of Parasyte (10/10) and why not try the king of seinen Berserk (10/10) if you are at it. Sui´s latest work "The Penisman" (8/10) lastly proves that he isn´t a one trick pony as it is a sex comedy about cannibalism amongst other topics... Hm.

Interesting characters, mildly philosophical and extremely engaging themes, moral dilemmas, conflicts, but a promise for something more, this manga had every piece of potential to be awesome, but unfortunately, in the end, at one point the author opted for cheap shock value and brutal action scenes over pursuing character development and plot as the main goals of the manga.

I will leave the spoilers out, but the ending is also extremely, extremely disappointing. It was a manga that could have had me screaming "Ahh, amazing" but in the end, I am just left with a bitter aftertaste.

If you're interested in this, just watch the anime, be disappointed with the ending, and leave it there, knowing it does not get better.

Well... this situation is somehow hilarious. Lots of people complain about the end and complain how horrible it is and try to analyse why it was such a "piece of crap". Haha.
Did you actually read this story? Yes? Then you should have noticed that THIS ending can't be all there was to it. That mangaka planned all this - the frustration and anger about this "ending" was planned since at least past chapter 72. (Check out the chapter title). So no - that can't be all there was to it. He wouldn't plan such a shitty ending after doing all these foreshadowings and leaving all those clues...
I expect a sequel. A good one. And I expect a good amount of my theories to be crushed mercelessly. After all, this is the reason I love Tokyo Ghoul. It's a trip where you can't predict its ending. And where you continue to look back only to realize: Oh! This was all already there somewhere. So yeah. To sum it up: Don't read it now, read it in one or two months. Because if you do, right now you'll only be left in frustration, anger and worry like all those people who kept reading it until the end. (They wouldn't be so pissed off if they didn't enjoy the story) You are honestly better off reading it after the sequel was announced. (*I don't know for sure though whether Ishida will really announce a sequel - so don't take my word for it please!)

Update: One month later the sequel began running... just as predicted. Aaaand my theories were pretty much crushed, I'm really interested whether I'm correct with the few remaining ones. So please, you may begin reading now, you are in for a bloody ride
