Her sole hobby is staring at handsome, smooth-spoken Akira "Omi-kun" Ohmi, and tweeting her daily fantasies under the screenname "Lovesick Ellie." Follow along with a plain, perverted girl, a two-faced boy, and their curious romance! [Kodansha]

As a guy growing up on romcoms, this manga really hits the spot! Ellie might have been called boring and unattractive in the manga, but I find her more refreshing than most female leads in shoujo manga. Ellie might have a lot of outlandish fantasies, but she is able to separate delusion from reality most of the time, skillfully avoiding pointless drama in favor of spicing up her diabetes inducing romance.
I really liked how Wazurai no Ellie executed standard shoujo tropes, such as the very brief love triangles, where while the other male leads are annoying at first but experienced significant character growth.
Ellie's interesting personality and her over the top funny romance makes Wazurai no Ellie one of the rare shoujo manga that can appeal to male enjoyers of romcom.

I liked the female lead. She made me laugh. I feel like this story just whooshed by a ton of shoujo cliches. Right when you feel like you're about to hit an annoying overdone shoujo cliche, the female or male lead makes a different choice and we pass by that potential drama. Very cute story.

Shoujo, but no maiden. More please!

It goes without saying that a shoujo must have its tropes, but what I liked most about it is, that the couple actually TALKED and LISTENED to each other about their feelings whenever there was trouble. Something not even a Josei always manages.
Something that is definitely untypical in shoujo is the blatant interest in sexual fantasies, which is totally fine and normal. I hope that mangas like these help girls (especially in asian countries) to not succumb to the expectations of them being innocent and meek but to delve into their sexuality and accept it.
For a work of 40 chapters the supportive characters were very well fleshed-out and diverse. While the FL is of course the center, the ML also had a noteable growth in character. As a woman in their 20s I don't even like premises of shoujos anymore but Koi Wazurai no Ellie was definitely worth it.

I love how it's letting Ellie explore her sexuality on her own terms, while still being age-appropriate. While it still follows some tropes of shoujo manga, it's really progressive. If I knew any preteen or teen girls interested in reading romance stories, I'd definitely buy copies of this manga for them.
