Wow. This volume is chock full of Grade A jerks. Seriously. And loads upon loads of shoujo cliches.
"A Boy's Sweet Love" is the title story here... and there's really nothing "sweet" about this boy's love. He just decides he wants the girl and... That's that. End of story. Three chapters of a guy insisting their love is meant to be, a girl refusing to accept she likes the guy, and the two of them having questionably consensual sex every other minute. I think I just described every Haruko Kurumatani manga ever written. (Don't take offense, Kurumatani fans... I actually DO like some of her stuff, or else I wouldn't have read this.)
"Love of a Beast" is probably the best story in this volume. It's the same formula, really (Guy forces himself on girl, Girl pretends not to like it, yadda yadda, True Love), but at least done in an upfront enough way that it doesn't grate on the psyche quite so much. As questionable as selling yourself to pay off your family's debts is... At least the guy isn't QUITE such a jerk for, you know, having his way with her. (Look at the things Haruko Kurumatani is making me say!!!)
"Connected to You" was the worst of this bunch. There's just no depth to it, no emotion. How are these two in any way "connected"... Other than him being a big, fat jerk and her apparently going for that kind of thing? I just don't get it. This story was very flat.
Haruko Kurumatani has written some worthwhile shoujo manga... but this isn't one of them.
