I read this manga twice. The first time did confuse me but I still enjoyed it. Years later, after reading it again, it made complete sense.
It is hard to follow because everyone looks the same and the plot incorporates characters trying to outsmart each other. The moments before the climax reminded me of playing chess, trying to hide your intentions and tricking the opponent. It makes sense from the first person but is really hard to follow in third person.
That brings me to great characterization. Each character had a past that affected their personality and their actions. I feel like all the main characters had really complex emotions.

Just a short review since there are a lot of useful reviews here already and I'm a lazy person
When I first read Boy Princess a few years back I liked it, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't like it now for the reasons already listed here. So I think that the younger readers will probably enjoy it to some degree

Manga with six faces

If you check out TVtropes.com, there is a trope that many comics unfortunately fall under-- "Only Six Faces"
This refers to the horrible art style an artist uses. The characters all look so similar to each other you can't tell who is who, and why is that person there. Then, because of the fact that they ALL LOOK THE SAME, you can't tell whaat's going on in the story.
So I rage quit half way through the series.

I tried as hard as I could but I just couldn't understand which character was which. I was confused through out more than half and so I stopped and skipped to the end. I couldn't care less about the main characters but took favor in Shahi and the Evil King instead. Then at the end with the son. A lot of managakas (especially manhwa) have this problem where they can't seem to draw a variety of characters' facial expressions, or none as all. They looked the same wether they're mad or happy. This one was especially hard because all the hair was alike and faces as well. The girls looked like the boys and the old looked like the young. I just didn't enjoy putting the puzzle together every scene that two characters pop up. I'm sure I would've enjoyed this more if this was fix but for now I'm going hafta say this manga wasn't all that good. I give it props for a interesting storyline with the gender shifting clan though. 5/10

If it was not for him I wouldn't rate the series this high. He is just the type of uke I've always love but hardly see in manga (yeah some mangaka did try to describe this kind of uke but they usually fail...). I love uke that are breathlessly beautiful, stoic, quiet, calm.. AND being tortured in a tragedy love (ok that's kinda cruel but...). His story is also more interesting, I like Nicole and Jed and their story is cute but it's kinda typical, I'll probably forget them in two or three days...
THE ART: I think this is a main reason that decides who will love and hate this series. Those who adores the art may love it and those who can't stand it may drop this or find it awfully hard to continue reading. As for me I didn't like the art at first but it grew on me, it's the typical art of most manhwa and I've got used to it. I will give it an 8 since I love Shahi's hair style and Glewhin's clothes.
PLOT: It has lots of plot twists and while some are good a lot of them are too unreal, confusing, dramatical... it made the story unrealistic and a bit boring at the end (but still so good for a shoujou, I think)
Anyway, I think this is a worth trying manhwa. Even if you hate this it doesn't mean this manhwa is THAT terrible. Many ppl find this awesome and I think it depends on personal taste.

I enjoyed most of the story. Overall, the artwork could've been better and the transitions between scenes also had a lot of room for improvement. This is recommended for anyone who wants to read a political story centering around a LOT of romance. There's romance everywhere in this story and all different kinds of love too.
I knew I was never going to like the original setup of the story based on the summary, but my only serious complaint about this story is about the climax. I found it a little messy for my liking.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The way the fighting between Jed and his brother got out of hand irked me. Then the King joined in the mess, all of a sudden his older brother came back, and people just seemed to be coming and going as they pleased. And the King admits this was part of his plan all along... Problem: having a messy internal conflict and also bringing in outsiders to that conflict (mercenaries) is a major problem for a country. It's not the kind of thing you can cover up.
Ultimately, everything seemed too 'neat' in the end, even though things were messed up beyond repair. And how long can Nicole really last living in a shack? Especially one on a frequent route from the castle to the border? It just... could've ended better, and had a better climax with some smarter political angles at play. Plus, have the climax with the main characters just before the denouement and not with a long story of Nicole's two brothers' situations coming after. It really felt like Nicole and Jed were ditched at the end, left in a forest to live out their days as scavengers.

This is not only a simple story about boy meets boy they fall in love and f*ck their brains out during the rest of the series...
This is a story about many relationships, and about LOVE... just many forms of love...
from the purest to the most twisted, it has them all...
Also don't think it's booring cause the plot has sooo many twists!
that will keep u entertain until the very end!...... The only bad thing, it's that u have to be really paying attention to the story cause it's kind of complicated sometimes
cause of those same twists, but it's good though!
but they all share one thing in common...Despair..
... (and also possessiveness at it's BEST! )...
PD: If u are thinking of reading it know.. be smart and go look 4 a tissue honey, u will need it! LOL ...cause many tears will come! because of crying or laughing
Poor characters, and also poor little heart
... (of course MY heart! <3 and yours! after u read this!)

I liked it, is not as confusing as some of the comments below claim. I had no problem understanding the plot, it could become confusing at the end but if you take it slow it's easy to understand. I liked the story, I found it to be fun and the art is pretty, tho' I found it a bit strange at the beginning it grew on me ^-^ I read it really fast so that means I liked it

The only reason I finished this was because I downloaded it.
The characters all look the same,I got confused by volume 3 and after that I couldn't pick up on what happened.I don't even know what happened in the end and who died.it was quite a waste of time to me

I give this an unflinching 2 out of 10.
I'm always desperate for longer shounen ai and yaoi series and I was excited when I read the summary for this series and saw its length. My initial excitement faltered by the second page. The artwork is beautiful. The clichés are plentiful, to the point of redundancy, but given the entire premise is cracky I can’t complain.
The problem is the execution of the story. It’s clear that Kim Se-Young is a great artist, but not a great writer. I find similar examples of rushed storytelling in other Korean manhwa and I’m inclined to think it’s stylistic of the culture. Nevertheless, I take issue with the haphazard storyboarding. It’s too rushed. Too many things are going on all at once. Between one page and the next, six different things have happened, half of which happened off-panel, or as you comic savvy people would call it in the “gutter”. I understand the artist needs to conserve space and only draw the important events, but that’s no excuse for including redundant images of the protagonist decked out in flowery dresses and exclude the more important panels that tell readers what’s going on in the story.
There are so many scene-to-scene transitions that I simply couldn’t keep up with what was going on. With 9 volumes, you’d expect slower plot development and some moment-to-moment or aspect-to-aspect transitions to really build the world and flesh things out. I couldn’t follow the crazy fast paced workings of this series, no matter how hard I tried. It became ridiculous. Kudos on the art, but Kim Se-Young should not be allowed to storyboard her own work. It’s a waste of artwork.
