Life sucks, and high school bad boy Akamatsu needs an outlet for his pent-up frustrations. Seven, a homeless guy living in a nearby park, is just the outlet Akamatsu is looking for. Soon, he finds himself heading to the park every day just to pick a fight, even though he never wins. Could be the best bl manga I read in years.
Everything is so good here, characters, characters growth , the way family deal with their son homosexuality and the way thd dude himself hate himself for anything he is bcz it's how ppl looks at him, in one part he said why the other guy even like him, even the whole idea in his head that he needs to beat up to deal with his urge and think he deserves it and it's good he beat up for who he is sad af, in some part it's deal with pedo guys and how they abusing teens for prostitute,... it just so good.
Another amazing work of shoowa.
It left a bittersweet taste in my mouth , yk it's so crazy funny but at the same time it's just so sad and dark.
What a great story with amazing character-driven.

Totally recommend it, just read it.

I really love Hiromasa Okujima's art style as for the most part, it's pretty goofy and silly which is appropriate considering Seven and Aisuke are like highschoolers. It's refreshing to see the cohabitation of two dudes who happen to like each other, rather than the other way around. By not throwing all the focus on the romance aspect more dark and dramatic side plots can develop and seeing Seven's backstory explains some of his behavior. I don't feel like the darkness is that intense due to the humor and art choices lightening up most of the tension. I do appreciate how the serious moments properly shift the tone to how serious the situation is.

Rough Housing: Akamatsu and Seven

I've read this manga in several languages, licensed and scanlated. The rating here doesn't lie. My review is intended for SuBLime's version but you NEED to read this one way or a other.

Move over, Dog Style. The best delinquent BL manga is finally licensed in English! If you like plot-based gay stories like Banana Fish, Dog Style or Canis, buy this manga! If you like BL that actually cares about its LGBT characters, buy this manga! If you like BL with dark themes and a lot of heart, like Shinjuku Lucky Hole or God is Probably Left-Handed, buy this manga! If you like yankee/delinquent manga and aren't sure if BL is your thing... Volumes 2 and 3 will be right up your alley, so give this a try and trust me that things will get more exciting.

SHOOWA and Hiromasa Okujima don't need much of an introduction. They are both legendary. SHOOWA is mainly known for the quality of her gripping plots and highly skilled storytelling (she's a master of show-don't-tell.) She's probably one of the best BL writers out there. Okujima is a genuine delinquent mangaka whose bad-boy comic Akira no.2 was even made into a movie. He's also a massive fudanshi. Now that's a pedigree!

Almost everything about this manga works. It's genre-bending and incredibly gripping. It's a romance, yes, but it's also a crime thriller, a slice-of-life comedy AND a fantastic character drama. The main characters, Aisuke Akamatsu and Seven Kanzaki, are not stock characters by any means. SHOOWA's writing has constructed two interesting and well-rounded people, and Okujima's art has breathed life into them. They feel like lads you could meet in real life, guys you want to root for as they come to terms with their pasts together.

The licensed translation by SuBLime is charming. Having read it in its original language as well as several translations, I do think Volume 1 feels a bit more "sweet" than the original, and a couple of the jokes have been lost in translation. Also, I must point out that the blurb about SHOOWA in the book is incorrect. This is not her first work published in English by a long shot. It is, however, Okujima's first!

Despite my quibbles with the translation, I wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying the licensed version by SuBLime. The rough-edged sincerity of the original mostly carries through. The lettering is quite nice too. All in all, serviceable work. Buy it if you can.

CONTENT WARNING: This manga contains some dark themes like the effects of human trafficking and the social pressure to pass as straight in a homophobic society. These things are discussed with a care I've rarely if ever seen in BL, but you should probably avoid this one if you can't deal with those topics. There is no sadism or exploitation between the romantic leads, these are topics are part of their lives but not their sweet relationship.

Look, why are you still reading this review? If you've gotten this far, you should just read the manga already. Seriously, do yourself a favour. I'm sure you'll fall in love with Akamatsu, Seven, and the people who support them just as I did.

this is great. love it. a+. slow romance, cohabitation, yankees, delinquents, touch of gangs/yakuza, interesting art, an actually gay-identifying mc, the right amount of comedy— i swear to god it might just be perfect.

i don’t think it’s complete though (at 3 volumes)?

Wholesome and character-driven; what more could you ask for?

My two favorite things about this series are:

The art style: for long-time readers of BL manga the art style of Dousei Yankee might seem off-putting because it's drawn by a shonen/seinen manga-ka, giving the overall look and tone a more rugged, realistic perspective. I find it to be absolutely refreshing and fun, and it adds so much to Shoowa's fanatic storytelling. It's not for everyone, but if you love BL series that are outside of the status quo then this one is for you.
Character-driven story: so having a foreigner as the main love interest isn't something new in BL, but I've noticed that some authors tend to reduce that character down to just that: their "foreign"ness. There isn't much to their personalities other than they aren't Japanese, and the story ends up revolving around how endearing their ignorance is. In this story, the tachi is Philipine-born, but, (un)surprisingly, is actually a really interesting and dynamic character! As someone who is familiar with Japanese culture and their tendancy to close themselves off from foreigners, it's really exciting to see an immigrant play a large role in a series made for Japanese readers. This might not be as important a point for anyone else except me, but it's because of this reason that this series is now one of my favorite BLs of all-time.

Anyway, this manga is wonderful. I highly recommend it to those who are growing tired of BL tropes, but also don't take the genre too seriously, while also looking for a wholesome, slow-burning, memorable love story.

Genre-defying and so refreshing!

At first glance, this manga looks like a typical delinquent shounen series. Then you see the tags and notice that it's... yaoi? This series is a collaboration between long-time BL author and a shounen/seinen action mangaka - it sounds crazy, but the thing is, it works. Really well.

The art is very playful and masculine, which is really fitting for a yankee manga, and it's a breath of fresh air in the predominantly female-drawn world of BL. Best of all, the characters act like actual dumb guys. And even though it's a BL, the focus isn't entirely on romance, but more slice of life problems, including how Akamatsu's family deals with his sexuality. It's very realistic in terms of BL, doubly so when compared to Shoowa's previous works.

One last thing that really struck me - they talk about consent. Even when they do eventually get into a relationship, Seven goes along with Akamatsu's pace instead of forcing him into doing anything! It's unfortunate that consent is so rarely encountered in manga (and especially BL), that this line stuck with me: "I'll refrain from touching your dick without your consent." Wow, what a concept!

Bottom line - read this manga.

This manga so good. I like the drawing and how story is going. At first I don't expect much of the manga reading the description. But I try to read it. It kind of fun reading it. Although there still some part of story that I still can't really understand. I still like the development of the character and the story.
