Nice manga; though very improbable in places and not deep or meaningful. It reads like a better than average trashy harlequin. Sorry 🙂 Even though it's a bit melodramatic, I found myself reading it with much interest.

I liked the characters and it was a pleasant read throughout even if the subject matter can get very heavy. What was most interesting about the artwork was not the art itself but the paneling. I've grown really fond of the paneling work. I've seen more elaborate and intricate paneling done in manga but this was nevertheless an example of interesting paneling work.

Good manga overall

I knew this manga since quite long time ago but I refused to read it because I didn't usually read romance where any characters sexually abused in the past. But someone told me that this manga had a likeable main characters and they were so loyal to the one they love. So I tried with a warning in my head and prepared to drop it anytime it got worse and worse. Surprisingly, I found this manga enjoyable. I mean it was not fun reading how the characters become confused as they fall in love while they think they themselves are not worth a love from the beloved one, but it was a really nice experience. What makes it different from other manga that often brought the same theme is the ending. It was like a fairy tale, but it's nice to read a realistic approach with a fairy tale ending once in awhile, isn't it?.

It's not about rape but recovery from rape. Healing of the heart and mind to be precise. Hope that there is still a future and learning to grasp it with one's own hands. The ending was perfect. I loved it. It was mature and realistic and very Asian, very like what you'd expect here in our culture. Down to earth, grounded in reality, not a soppy Disney ending. Also, they probably won't break up. They're just being typical pragmatic far easterners. Here, everything, including love and life revolves around practicality, possibility and feasibility. I'm Chinese myself, so I kind of understand where they're coming from. They want the best end result for each other, but also hope to remain together forever, but aren't certain if they are the best for each other, so they're just taking it one step at a time, enjoying each moment they have together, and going with the flow, crossing each bridge as they come to it, since life is always full of uncertainty.

Some parts are pretty average for a shoujo manga, but for the most part the characters were likable and well done and the more mature themes I actually appreciated -- I felt like the darkness hanging over it was a much-needed added level to make it an impactful story. It for the most part accurately portrayals the fear of someone who has been abused as well as the terrible sadness of a mother losing her child

both with the older sister and with the main character, Hinako's, abortion
. Could have been much better, but having read the amount of shoujo that I have, it was still above average.

But the ending just left a bad taste in my mouth.

As they admit their love for each other, they both think that one day they will leave each other for other people. What? Personally I don't find that to be a good ending to a manga where it deals with these 2 and then at the end when they FINALLY get together, it's taken away.

Some might call that realistic, but this story wasn't mean to be realistic. We were given a "happy ending" with an *.

Melodramatic but still enjoyable enough

Right out of the gate this manga gives you a decent plot hook, I was at least intrigued to begin with. However long term there's certainly a slow decline in quality, leading to a pretty lukewarm ending. I did enjoy how the story actually dealt with some pretty heavy issues, but the obligatory third wheel love interest character just ruined the story for me with her constant shit. I just wanted someone to give her a nice slap in the face.

This is still alright but it is kind of forgettable. The early chapters make you think the rest of the story will be super deep but it's really just typical shoujo fare.

I agree with some people that this series is too dramatic. But I love how the author describes Hinako and Daisuke feelings, but I don’t really like the ending. somehow it's not happy ending to me.

This cannot be describe as anything else, other than a work of extraordinary art and fantastic storytelling. Most manga that are of the same kind of theme as Bitter Virgin tends to lose it's purity by displaying an excessive amount of sexual assault. I am not some sick person who would want to read in details about what happen when it comes to something such as Rape and so I do not wish for there to be unnecessary display. And being who I am, I am please that the manga did a great job showing just the right amount to give me an idea of what the heroine is going through. At the same time, we aren't just focus with the protagonist point of view alone but the whole casts of characters. Reading through this manga, it is as though I myself have been pulled into their world and is living among them, watching as their story unfold.

Truth be told, I was afraid to read this because I thought that it would surely leave a hole inside me. But after finishing it, I regretted not reading it sooner. Bitter Virgin isn't just about your typical school romance of back and white, but a colorful story of a young man who fell in love with a girl whom no one could possibly love. A love that transcend beyond what people comprehend as love and a purity that goes beyond Virginity itself. I think that this is what the author is trying to display and is the driving force for a Bitter Virgin.

I feel for the Hinako, and all that shes been through, but I'm guessing everybody else feels the same way for her...
I thought the main character (Daisuke) could of been more confident, and more there for the character. Yes, granted that they are in high school. Any high school guy would have wavered in their response upon hearing the awful truth about what had happened to the girl.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I felt so bad that the Daisuke's sister had a baby and wanted one w. She went through all this fuss about wanting one or not. Then she loses it. I was crying so badly when I got to that part. I think the saying "beggars can't be choosers" would fit in with that scenario.
When I read that Hinako finally found out that Daisuke listened to her at the church. I would of been so mad and hurt. Yeah, she got mad for a while and ignored Daisuke; but it didn't last too long. I don't know, I thought if I was in her situation I would of done something differently. I mean that's the ONLY reason why he approached yo. He wouldn't of done so if he didn't listen to your problems, that essentially means that your whole friendship basis was out of pity.
