Even when it's the same team of translators.
So...1st thing: No one is decent or kind in this. Even the "good guys" are blinded by their "good" powers so they neglect everything that doesn't fit into their narrow definition of "good".
Everyone is in it for themselves. They are constantly murdering each other. They are constantly scheming. The FL, after coming back, is no different. None.
Her victims are her abusers, yes, but there are hundreds upon hundreds of collateral damage. She could have done so much more to save people but she did not.
1.) the Saintess is murdered by being offered as a sacrifice to the devil(s).
2.) She's tortured for 600 yrs in Gehenna (Hell).
3.) Her soul is so pure its about to annihilate itself in those 600 yrs. In contrast a highly revolting soul can last over a 1000 yrs?
This makes no sense to me. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't it be that her soul is so "good" it should be able to withstand the abominations its suffered under in Gehenna?
Whatever. Onwards.
4.) The Devil(s) makes an offer to send her soul back to the material world to take over another body for revenge.
This is where I lost the plot. Sooooo, WHY was she sent back when her soul was about to be extinguished? Because the Devil(s) want to keep her soul longer? But it'll be twisted, losing the coveted purity the Devil(s) desperately love so much. So. What was the point?
That's some confusing bullshit. They'll send her soul to be enriched with nasty darkness as she executes her revenge and it's to make it last longer under the Devil(s) torture? I guess, after she comes back to Gehenna?
But weren't the Devil(s) orgasmic over how pure her soul is in the first place?!??? How the hell did it go from "Ooh, yeah, must have yummy shiny soul! Such delicious, super duper uber rare delicacy!" to "We'll give you ALL the powers so go back, get revenge then come back so we can torture your newly darkened soul again!"
Wtf.
Apart from the above nonsense the father (of FL's new body) in this is one of the most useless, pathetic, spineless, whiny, cowardly excuse for a sperm donor I've ever read. I'm more enraged by his existence than the FL-in-her-new-body being physically abused again by her uncle, aunt and their posse.
It took his daughter nearly dying a SECOND time for him to find his balls and step up.
He's also one of the most beautiful 2d men I've ever seen. Ugh. A waste of a stunning character design.
And I've devoured a lot of books over the decades. I have thousands in my personal library. I've read around 500-ish webtoons, manhua, manhwa and manga. I know because I have a spreadsheet. So, yes, I've read some shitty-ass fathers who still supposedly loves their children but, damn, son. Damn.
8/10 for the drop-dead gorgeous artwork and gothic atmosphere though. Just don't look too long at the chest, feet or the fashion.
If this story comes back this artist will not. They've already said another artist will do season 2. Unless the artist is on par with season 1 then I won't be coming back either.
7/10 for fascinating world building...even if it makes no sense the vast majority of the time. I love, love, LOVE the jewel concepts for the Dukedoms. I'm not sure why jewels like Peridot are chosen but it's such a cool theme.
The "strong points unique to each Ducal bloodline" is...uh...not very well explained. At all. There's 6 Dukedoms, supposedly, in this empire.
- The Garnet of Loyalty has "Authority". (Of what? No idea. It's never explained adequately. This is FL's new family.)
Sometimes the translation says "Power" instead of either "Authority" or Loyalty, adding to the headache of making heads or tails of the world.
Later on the translation calls The Sapphire the Force of "Justice" instead.
Can't even keep this shit straight.
-
The Amethyst of Abyss has "Magic". Cool.
-
The Peridot of Brilliance has "Justice" and "Judgement" which are abilities to see through "lies". Sweet. (Yeah, these guys have the true "Justice", not Sapphire.)
-
The Emerald of Blessing has "Divinity". Righ-- No, wait.
How? It's repeated over and over that Peridot is the one who has Angelic/celestial/holy bloodline. They're the ones who has divine powers. I thought the powers are unique?
So what the hell is Emerald's "Divinity" then?
- And finally The Selene (Moon) of "Extended Might"?!??? They're the Imperial Family who are at the mercy of the Dukedoms. They're just a figurehead with no power.
