Not an action series

Reading a lot of the other reviews, I get the impression that people come to this manga with the wrong expectations. Yes, there's a lot of violence, but at its heart, it's not an action series. If you expect fights with feel-good payoff, you're going to be disappointed.

Rather, it's a very character-focused story. I would look at this series as an exploration of one core question: "When there's no hope left, what do you live for?" The protagonist's quest for revenge is one answer. Other characters each find their own as well (including, yes, finding hope). It's then the clash of different aspirations, and the protagonist's search for purpose that makes the story interesting (as incredibly cliché as that analysis sounds).

This is a 9 instead of a 10 for me because the plot does drag a bit at some points, and the (very weird) explanation for some of the big mysteries was not well foreshadowed. The reason these issues don't have a bigger impact on the score for me, on the other hand, is that they are not the focus of the work.

Mixed feelings

First off, I have a lot of issues in describing and expressing my thoughts about this series. It might feel like there really isn't a plot to this at first, but I would say...it's actually progressive (slowly). I mean there were some moments where I felt like dropping this but in the end I just couldn't but now, I don't have to, because it's pretty decent.

It just loops quite a bit with our MC, Agni/Fire Punch who's always struggling with his identity though. But the actions and the dark ambience is pretty sweet. Now, I kind of look forward to MC's and his thoughts of what actions to take because it's always conflicting and sometimes, it can even flip everything over. Also, all his actions basically also bring up some consequences regardless of what he chose to do so it's fascinating because I feel like this is where the story kicks in.

His relationships with his sister from the introduction is basically his core foundation for the entire series so far even up to where the current chapter is (ch.67) and not something to be underestimated (I guess). I'm still actually looking forward to this series despite the slow progress and I was surprised to hear Viz picking this up but then again after the latest chapters, I feel like it's actually reasonable.

Now tldr: this series is a hit or miss, even if it's a hit, it won't exactly be like an instant, but it'll slowly reel you in. One thing though, you REALLY need a good patience for this series either way. Or you can feel like this is just a cheap mess of action and dark ambience instead.

I literally have no idea what was going on the entire time. But I was captivated...by the erraticism of the story, the capriciousness of the characters and the emotions...so I kept on reading with a huge scowl.
The story is dark. Very much. Depressing...controversial themes...wonderful art.
If you plan on reading it, do so but don't think. Just flip through the pages with a shut-off brain.

This is amazing

the darkest most insane berserk level despair, with the main character as a mythical entity of vengeance, undying and unyielding to avenge all he knows in an apocalyptically cold and empathy devoid landscape.

For some people it will be confusing because there's a lot of implicit details that is not found in the dialogue.
It's not perfect by any stretch.

It's Beautiful

Seriously it's beautiful. After reading part of the 1st chapter I thought the author was just being edgy for the lolz, but as I kept on reading I realized that this was pretty damn awesome. Like seriously, I was shocked by how much it touched me.

There's no super long build up and no preachy speeches. Everything is just messed up cause that's the way things are. When I start an apocalyptic manga this is the type of briefness I want. We've all read dystopian stories before, there's no need to go into the gritty detail of human de-evolution. Just plop us in, tell us the background( in this case it's a world encased in ice) and get the ball rolling.

On a personal note: I hate revenge driven characters and plot lines. A story has to be real good to get me behind a revenge plot. As a point of reference, one of the reasons I dropped Beserk was because the revenge plot didn't move me. Here I am recommending a revenge plot. Take that as you will.

Lost in it's own way

The author seems to be really undecided what kind of story he wants to create so he erases the entire cast four times, with the exception of the main character, thus the result is a collage of different stories. The end is average only, perhaps there's a deeper meaning inside, but I don't feel I'd like to seek for it. The feeling that was left in me is that this is an immature work of a mangaka that can do better, like his Sayonara Eri.

At times I felt like anything weird/gruesome in this manga was there just for shock value. The story itself is weird because there is no real plot line, it just flows until everything eventually ends(quite literally), it's good but not the best and not for everyone too.
