Beautiful. I feel really weird saying that about a title consisting almost entirely of sex, but at the same time, the author did a tremendous job conveying the feeling the girls had for one another: honest love. Watching the relationship grow, and the characters realize their feelings for each other, is really exciting. And the sex, rather than being simply porn, actually gives the same feeling of discovery, as the two move from being hesitant and fooling around, to being passionate and inseperable. The only negative that comes to my mind is that the artwork felt strange at first. I'm not sure if it got better, or if I just got used to it, but the feeling only lasted for the first couple of chapters. Maka Maka is a beautiful love story, and you should read it.

Edit: I just re-read it, and I think the artwork is really incredible, but the emphasis on mouths/lips makes the characters look different enough from the mainstream that it's distracting. At least at first. Also, it was just as great the second time around. There's just so much emotion -- there's no story/plot to speak of, but the characters feel so alive. This is definitely a 10 for me -- it should be on the bookshelf of anyone not put-off by nudity.

Mature story undercut by overreliance on sex scenes

The subtitle kinda says it all: sex, life and communication. The women in this manga really don't get any of that from the men that they're with. Most of the time men treat them just as sex objects to the point where they don't trust men or in Jun's case doesn't fully trust anyone period. While they both enjoy sex its never quite as good with men because how they are made to feel about it. They don't feel the same kind of emotional connection nor is there the communication with men that they find with each other. Nene and Jun at several points mention how guys are insensitive in the way they speak to the women. They date men because in one sense that is what society expects of them, but they are never satisfied with them. What starts off as messing around evolves into sex buddies and then a passionate relationship. The sex is better for them because of the emotional connection, the feelings of understanding and respect (they value each others creativity), the beginnings of trust, and frankly the dangerous excitement (whether its sex in public places or that they are 2 women involved with each other that goes against society). Its refreshing that both characters are women in their 20s not some high school romance and it has a much more mature angle.

Visually I really like it. The drawings are very nice and the female proportions are realistic and really good. You can see this especially with Nene as she has a more natural figure with some fat on it and her body has the right indentations in the proper places. Her body really looks like its based of a real live model. I also thought most of the coloring was decent.

Now, I don't mind so much that this doesn't have a traditional linear narrative. Its more like snapshots of their time together. The problem is that it emphasizes the sex a lot and may turn off some readers. Its using sex as a vehicle to try to say something about relationships between people. However, imho I think it relies on this tactic too much. I would have liked to have seen more discussion between the women or with other people, because its a very one sided point of view we are getting here that only focuses on their emotions. They both mention at certain points that what they are doing maybe unfair to their boyfriends, but we never really see them have to deal with the fallout or repercussions of their decisions nor do we see them have to struggle with how heterosexual people or friends might view their relationship. I think it loses some of the drama because of that and because there isn't quite enough discussion about relationships and sex the good parts get overshadowed by the sex scenes. I think there was potential for it to be much deeper, but perhaps it was just meant to be an erotic story so it didn't need to go much further. Still there's some smart parts to it that elevates it to me to about a 7 or a B to B- rating, decent but not great.

Not hentai.

There's nudity and sex, but that doesn't make this manga hentai any more than the sex in, say, "Last tango in Paris" makes that movie porn. There's quite a difference. Lots of nudity, lots of ecchi and lots of sex... yet it's not porn.

A hint of this is that you won'd find here the most obvious things you find in all hentai. Like, say... genitalia? I don't know you, but to me, no **** (female) and no **** (male) means it's not really porn. Which isn't to say that it isn't very hot... but I digress.

Another hint that this isn't hentai is some reviewers' complains that the girls are slutty (which they are, in a way... though I won't spoil it for you, there are reasons for this). I mean... have you ever heard someone complain that a character in a porn movie isn't monogamous and sleeps around? Yeah... that's my point.

These girls do sleep around with men. They both struggle with their personal issues that go beyond sexuality, and have to do more with self-acceptance, assertiveness, and the ability to trust and love other people (though, as others have mentioned, this isn't an angsty manga). As college students, you could also say that they're in a experimental stage, past their first incursions in sex (common theme to so much hentai) but before having yet figured out their place in life. Eventually, something else developes between them, as they slowly turn to each other for comfort and support (and, huh, pleasure). Sex is just the tool these girls use to relate to each other.

Chapters are all very short, almost like separate vignettes in these two girls' lifes. The whole manga itself is rather short, at only 2 volumes. It did left me wishing for more. It has a somewhat open ending, which might dissappoint some readers, but it's still mostly satisfying.

All in all, a great mix of sweetness, hotness, drama (though not too much), with a somewhat more adult approach than you're probably used to in ecchi manga. I recommend you check it out (if you're old enough to be reading this!) and see if it works for you.

its nice in a semi romantic kind of way.
its not just mindless sex.
the relationship between the two is nice, but as others say, still a little shallow...
also i was expecting some sort of fall out/break up and make up at the end. but there was none. nothing really happens... but its nice and well drawn and touching (in a non-rude way! 😉 haha.

This manga would be an excellent yuri manga if it werent for two things:

Jun is a slut who sleeps with any guy who praises her art.
2)Nene has a boyfriend who she clearly does not even like, but still insists that she loves him. Even though she clearly loves Jun more.

These things normally wouldnt be a problem if they were resolved, but in the end theyre still exactly the same, boyfriends and all. They say they love each other but only as friends, yet despite this they have sex constantly. So close to making a masterpiece Kishi Torajirou, yet so god damn far. Raelly why an author would do that to their work is beyond me.

Prettiest porn ever.

It was a case of instant love for me. Being a dyke, I obviously love reading yuri, but I haven't found another yuri manga as sexually explicit as this one -- and in full color, too! The sheer quantity of eye candy overwhelms my brain cells -- but so does the hint of these girls' lives beyond the sex. The way they act with each other, and how close they are to each other, really adds a whole lot of intensity and depth to their sexual interactions.

To call the heroines slutty is just ridiculous. I have no idea why women who enjoy sex are called slutty, when men who enjoy sex are just accepted as being normal men.

Sure, these girls have issues with insecurity and intimacy, but then again... Who doesn't? In any case, it doesn't matter; as much as I love the characters, I read this series primarily for the porn. And as far as the quality of the porn is concerned, this is obviously a 10 out of 10. 😀

it may have been months ago, but Hell Clues, posted what I was going to say, Nene was sad he boyfriend couldn't make her birthday dinner so she sleeps with the first guy that approaches her, is only sad that she didn't spend the night with Jun and yet she still believes she loves her boyfriend.

Where's the plot?

I'm giving this a 7 purely because it was enjoyable to see an extensive manga in full colour. There was minimal plot- with the same plot-like device being repeated over and over again each chapter. There were a couple of nice emotional moments between the lead characters, but not much to speak of really. There's also something which oddly alienates the reader. Wish there was a proper story!

As an introduction to yuri, it was mediocre. No story so to speak, but you have to give it 'slice of life', and a whole bunch of situations to have sex in (annoyingly so). These two laugh about the stupidest things, and I found it somewhat distracting. However, the artwork was nice, and you do get to see the comfort of the relationship between them.

But then again, I'm female and this is geared towards men, not women.

There had been a lot of smiles, but who said that was so bad? Maybe a little uncomfortable, because they laugh for pointless things sometimes, but it's all good. 🙂

Characters changed throughout the manga, but I think that's only because of development of somesort.

Overal I believe that it was worth the read. Also, the color is something new, only few manga are full-blown-out color like this one.
